In broad terms yes they should. But it is disgusting that muslims have been singled out, either all immigrants have to speak English to a certain standard or non have too. Itls ridiculous and unlawful to suggest that 1 religion should have to meet a stricter criteria.

This. Although I do think that some of the 20 Million could be well spent on teaching English speaking people English. |

"Muslim fury at order to 'speak English'. What are your views? Should people living in this country speak English?"
I find that it comes in handy.
I imagine their fury is at being singled out rather than the absurdity of the demand.
Kind of like if a woman in the middle of a swinging club shouts at a guy to "go wash your smelly dick"; it's not an unreasonable request as such, there are just more tactful ways of doing it. |

I was always brought up that it was rude to whisper so to a certain extent I do think those that can speak English should speak English when in the presence of others.
It is wrong to single out one race or religion but i must admit to not seeing the article as if they are reporting that one specific group is up in arms then they would be reporting the facts.
Funnilyvenough I love meeting Asian couples through Fab and find it a turn on when they speak in a language that I do not understand. I usually encourage it if i feel it will put them at ease |

I think that anyone who lives in another country should be able to speak that country's language. That includes British people who go and live in France and Spain whatever their religion.
It's only sensible if you need to call an ambulance for instance. |

"The government says 22% of Muslim women living in England speak little or no English - a factor it argues is contributing to their isolation.
Segregation, the prime minister says, is allowing "appalling practices" such as female genital mutilation and forced marriage to exist, and increasing vulnerability to recruitment by so-called Islamic State - also known as Daesh.
He is also announcing a review of the role of Britain's religious councils, including Sharia courts, in an effort to confront men who exert "damaging control over their wives, sisters and daughters". " |

"How many British people make the effort to use the native language when they go on holiday?"
Bit of a difference to holiday and living there. We have polish neighbours and they learnt English.
Maybe everyone learns a universal sign language. This means that deaf people are not singled out as they have no choice but not to hear. So you could go on holiday and sign the universal language which means any country is the same and if in the company of deaf people they can also talk to anyone.
However as with other comments. Do not pick on one race. Everyone who lives in a country should either learn before they get here or actively start learning when they get here, |

Course it's different but you get my meaning. How many ex pats speak the lingo?
I don't think anyone should be singled out. If you choose to live somewhere, you should make the effort to at least try to learn the language. It doesn't matter where you go, where you come from or what religion you practice. |

I got by with a little French in Tunisia but Arabic was way above my level of learning. My buddy would have had to have learned loads of languages as he's been to every European capital and other places in the world. |

A guy I used to work with had a universal sign to get him to the right place in any country in the world. He held both his hands out in front of him like he was grabbing a pair of boobs and said 'Sexy girls' very slowly and clearly. By saying this to a taxi driver he got to either a night club/strip club or brothel...exactly where he wanted to be |

The majority of expats go to areas where there a lot of other expats hence not having to learn the lingo.. likewise for other races coming to the UK. ..
This only creates small communities that have no intention of integrating.. no reason to single out Muslims.
I agree peeps should learn the native lingo whoever or wherever.. |

Of course
Integrate or fuck off
And Muslims are bei singled out for many reasons
1. Largest population of non integrated people
2. Can be very racist towards white and black people especially when it comes to children dating etc
3. Harbour extreme views
4. Virtual Muslim ghettos have been established in areas
5. Don't respect western values and people - sexual abuse cases etc
If your upset - tough - help change your community and culture and learn English if you don't already speak it
Final point - how can you be multicultural if you don't engage the locals |

There are free courses in England ESOL for people who's native language is not English. Thins has been the case for well over 20 years, I do know this as I married a non English female and she lives here has done for 20 years.
It was offered to her on entry to the country and I took her to and from the local school until she has a good command of English.
So there should be no problem for foreigners to learn at least conversational English enough to get started.
A lot of the Muslim and other imagrents I deal with day to day can and do speak enough English to get along. |

Love being out and about with my mum or whatever and making a point of talking Greek....people hate it...like they're missing out on something or your up to something.
me...I quite like being out and hearing a multitude of languages I can't understand..feels nice, feels more worldly somehow and reminds me there's a lot happening out there.
I do think those looking to settle here should be able to speak English or should look at learning it as my parents did when they settled here but shouldn't have to use English as their primary language if they choose not to. They should be able to communicate when needed though.
at a guess most ex pats still use English as their primary language and learn the local lingo for when they need it...I do feel the same should apply to brits abroad too...wanna move there? Learn the lingo |

I think people who live in England should be able to/be learning to speak English. However, if they wish to speak their own language when they're around their friends and family, then that's their right to do so.
I used to live in an area where there were lots of families from Nepal, so my bus journeys would be spent listening to conversations I couldn't understand.. I quite enjoyed it.
If I were to move to another country, I'd want to learn the language, otherwise how am I supposed to get anything done? |

I'm reminded of a forum thread a while ago where a forumite mentioned he had recently moved to The Netherlands.
I asked him if he could speak the language, he said he couldn't but that he'd learn along the way whilst living there.
Should anyone moving to a new country be at least conversant in the language of the adopted country? Yes.
Does it only happen with immigrants who come here? No. |

It's not just the lack of language skills it's the social issues that happen because of it

We dominated in what we perceived to be the correct cultural attitudes just as we do today.
It really boils down to whether you think we got it right or they did.
I think the fact that most people emigrate to the west would show we got the right balance, not perfect but better than there's! |

It makes perfect sense. 'Western' folks have no problem immigrating because they've made themselves the dominant culture in many countries to which they are not native, even when natives peoples exist there. .
We dominated in what we perceived to be the correct cultural attitudes just as we do today.
It really boils down to whether you think we got it right or they did.
I think the fact that most people emigrate to the west would show we got the right balance, not perfect but better than there's!"
Well then it's good to know that white supremacy has served its purpose. |

It's got nothing to do with white supremacists...
If you could get past your ideological beliefs of white people being bad and read some history, you might actually get a better understanding.
When the west finally realised slavery was a bad cultural through free thinking, we actually banned it and then enforced those new beliefs on other cultures..
Yeah we're enforcing what we think is right...

I'm taking about the act of enslaving, to imagine that one race is different to another actually makes you a racist.
Humans were humans the world over, we all did slavery you know, even black people
Some of us thought it bad that idea grew and eventually through are system we banned the cultural idea of slavery.

I'm saying a good idea is just a good idea.. It's got fuck all do with someones skin colour!.
You seem to have an attitude that bad ideas are good ideas providing those ideas are held by the minority?.
Now getting back to the point.
The government is attempting to solve a problem of some bad ideas(cultural) held by some minority of the population!.
I honestly think if they came here and held no bad cultural ideas nobody would give a fuck about making them speak the lingo.
The Amish speak German in America, they seem to get along OK without causing big headlines because there bad ideas don't really headbutt our own! |

So lets see, the Amish way of life means...
- Social segregation from the wider community.
- Not speaking the same language as the wider community.
- Women to be obedient to their husbands.
- Women are made to dress modestly.
- Education stops at ages 13-14.
- Courtship for girls can start as early as 14.
- Shunning other Amish people who do not conform.
This you don't see a problem with but Muslims you do?

the problem lies with the culturally entrenched english attitude of negativity to languages other than english. if the english were more open to other languages then inwardly migrating people would find it easier to pick up english. |

This is my last reply because you're talking a load of tosh.
Many Amish beliefs certainly do headbutt my own but it's nice to know they have a comrade in you.
And the terrorist planes in New York had nothing to do with 'expansionism' of cultural practises. |

Well it's called cultural push back, we tolerate bad practises that go against our own , like the Amish as I pointed out.. Until the point that those bad cultural or religious ideas are perceived to be a threat to our own.
The day those places flew into the world trade centre was a bad day for both the west and Muslims for that pushback by the west was inevitable.

If your upset - tough - help change your community and culture and learn English if you don't already speak it
Final point - how can you be multicultural if you don't engage the locals

A few years ago the CEO of Ealing council Mr Darrah Singh wrote a news paper article saying that people entering the UK should learn the language. I couldn't agree more, when I first started working for the company I work for now we had lots of Indian staff who claimed they didn't speak English in a short time i found out it was because they didn't trust me so pretended not too.
I have no issues with multilingual society where I do draw the line is when you hear 2+ people talking English then suddenly change to another language, to me that's just trying to hide something or speak badly about someone.
I also remember walking into a off licence and the shop keeper shouted in gujarati serve the fucking white man (luckily I was taught some curses in Gujarati) that's not acceptable anyway you look at it. |

"I think that anyone who lives in another country should be able to speak that country's language. That includes British people who go and live in France and Spain whatever their religion.
It's only sensible if you need to call an ambulance for instance.
Yep
It seems strange to single out Muslim women specifically - EVERYONE who lives in a country should make an effort to learn the language of that country. "
it's a good idea to learn the native language of the country you are living in.
You could say it is a basic common sense measure to take if you want to integrate better.
The only community which has large scale issues with terrorism though is the Muslim community, so maybe they are being singled out for that reason. Youngsters in Muslim households are being radicalised over the Internet, (most isis videos and isis propaganda on the likes of twitter targeted here is in the English language) if the parents learn to speak and read good English they could maybe stop some of these youngsters being radicalised over the Internet. After all shouldn't all good parents know what their kids are reading or talking about with their friends and if it's potentially dangerous material then parents can step in to stop it. |

Being a bit of an old fart verging on a Victor Meldrew clone, learning new languages isn't that easy for me these days.
However my Spanish (although not fluent) is above survival level and I can just about survive in German. That is of course when I don't nearly spit my teeth out trying to pronounce a word that would get you six zillion points in Scrabble.
Mrs speaks native German, fluent English, survival Spanish, and a little Arabic.
I do agree that everyone should try and speak the language of the country they live in be they Muslims or not.
I think the main reason Cameron has (albeit ham fistedly) singled out Muslim women is more to do with some cultural practices rather than just the language issue. He thinks that by learning English it will empower many Muslim women to speak out against some of those practices.
We will see.

Some thoughts from the padded cell:
If you go somewhere on holiday try and do your best with the local language.
If you go to work somewhere well you will NEED to speak their language or struggle. I travelled to Germany a lot and if you didn't speak German well then tough.
However if you choose to become British and live here permanently then you MUST learn to speak English. When in Rome etc ...
The BBC in their wonderfully Leftie way found some Muslims ladies who had lived here for 30 odd years and couldn't speak English. So in trying to make the point they were being singled out it proved that the policy is right (if badly presented). These women have not lived in Great Britain. they have lived in an isolated world of their families. I bet their husbands learned English though. Sadly the BBC failed to find them.
I doubt the policy says 'Muslim women must learn English' at all and maybe someone gave an example which happened to be Muslim. But again the IDEA is to stop the isolation, the abuse and get the ladies of the house to understand what their children are doing and maybe stop some of the extremism. |

excellent point. It always amazes me when you go to a Council Office or Hospital and there are all these notices in various languages. Why? Its the UK and English is the official language.
When I was driving I used to load at British Sugar places and one in Suffolk had loads of notices in all sorts of European languages (except English) with diagrams etc. at the truck park area. So I asked the traffic office what all the notices were for. I was told it was to help the drivers who couldn't speak English so they knew where the showers, canteen and other facilities were. "Nice" I said "So why don't you also tell us English drivers then?" |

They are, but Muslims are being held up as the example. The prime minister has raised the sue that Muslim women in particular are not learning English, but that other sections of society also fall into this category and have to be addressed. But as usual the press and the eejits on Internet forums only focus on one aspect.
It was not healed by the statement from the pig fucking idiot we pay to run the country which also focuses on only one section and doesn't give much publicity to the all encompassing aspect of the policy. |

Also very few Muslim men believe women should not be educated. The ones who do are usually power hungry despots who really would rather no one was educated to enable them to retain their hegemony. |

So you can get a job and look after yourself?
So you can understand the News and developments in your new country?
So you can inform the Emergency Services if you need them or you call them for someone else?
So you are aware of what is expected of you BY your new country.
So you can sing your new country's National Anthem?
So you can integrate with your neighbours?
So you can read the papers?
etc etc etc ..

Which is also misinformation: if you are retired , and eligible for UK pension, and live in a EU country; the UK government issues a " Form S1" to the country you live in: that tells your country of residence that the UK will reimburse that country for your health costs. |

However if you choose to become British and live here permanently then you MUST learn to speak English.
Why?
As a commitment to your new country?
As a courtesy to your new fellow country'persons'?
So you can get a job and look after yourself?
So you can understand the News and developments in your new country?
So you can inform the Emergency Services if you need them or you call them for someone else?
So you are aware of what is expected of you BY your new country.
So you can sing your new country's National Anthem?
So you can integrate with your neighbours?
So you can read the papers?
etc etc etc ..
How am I doing? "
Pretty poorly in my opinion.
Whilst I think that it is pretty important for the individual to learn the language of whichever country for many of the reasons you cite, I see no reason why anybody MUST do it. How would you enforce such an expectation? |

In my opinion yes
I work for the NHS and a lot of money , time and resources are wasted on interpreters and I'm sure it's similar for other organisations across the country
I appreciate it's not a simple subject with no easy solution and it's certainly unfair to highlight or pin point anyone in particular as this has been an ongoing issue for years |

Maybe they'll put someone on every bus, train and tram to shout "get out of my country" and see if they reply back in English.
That's been happening unofficially anyway but the looks of things. |

An oral and written exam part of the process of applying for citizenship.
If the exam is failed then the aplicstion is denied and they are given x monrhs to get thier affairs in order and leave unless they wualify for some kind of temporary visa. |

Quite simply. Do what the USA and other countries do. Make sure immigrants who are applying for British Citizenship attend history, citizenship and English classes and have to pass an exam. On passing they get their citizenship. On failing they don't.
Same rules for those seeking political Asylum except if they fail they get sent back to the country of first safe refuge which is where they should have gone anyway. Unless they are French, Belgian, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian or Icelandic of course..... |

is it now the law of the land that one must sing the National Anthem..?
btw i do think folks should learn the language of the country they live in if only so they can socialise and it helps to break down 'barriers' etc,,
shame that it only seems to be a requirement for people having moved here and not 'us' who move to other countries..

As an " expat living in France; I have made sure I speak French; many Brits don't; and refuse to do so; interestingly, they are mostly the same ones who say that everyone who lives in UK should speak English!
As a EU citizen, I don't have to doesk French to live here; but I do; (I believe personally that it's essential to live a useful life here) but to get my French Dual nationality, I have had to prove that I am competent in French to the "EU C1 Standard".

this has only hit the headlines because of the word MUSLIM what are the media expecting sick and tired of all this bullshit. Surely every one that comes to live within the UK should learn the lingo, I have lived in many countries and tried to learn there language out of respect to them. |

If you move anywhere in the world and they speak a different language then you should at least be able to say the basics, then learn as you go on, it doesn't matter where you come from or where you go, if you need help or want to be involved with any culture you should be able to speak the language.
That's just my opinion though

Nope it isn't and I don't think I said it was. I was asked why people should speak English in the UK and gave some examples.
Mind Comrade Corbyn seems to enjoy singing'The Red Flag' more than the National Anthem of the country he seeks to govern... |

So simple that it's been done for ages. People aged between 18 and 65 who want to become British citizens or settle in the UK have to pass an exam in spoken English (except if from English speaking countries) and an exam on life in the UK. |

However my Spanish (although not fluent) is above survival level and I can just about survive in German. That is of course when I don't nearly spit my teeth out trying to pronounce a word that would get you six zillion points in Scrabble.
Are you saying that you live in Germany and Spain but are not fluent in the language?
'Survival' level of both languages sounds very basic to me. "
I would brush up on your English a bit if I were you. Especially the meaning of "Above" |

"It would be interesting to see how much money would be saved by not having to pay for interpreters. The figure must be staggering, when all is totted up. Bet it costs the NHS a fortune a year.
same in Spain funny enough, there was a programme or a news article on the telly about the train that the elderly Brits are putting on their local Spanish medical services etc and the response from the indigenous population was similar to some on here..
The Spanish government were due to debate it last I heard, but that was some time ago.

Correct. The whole issue of Brits straining, and draining in Spain is a complete red herring that gets regularly chucked into immigration debates for no other reason than to muddy the water.
The British government do reimburse the Spanish health system. An occasional hiccup maybe, but generally the system works well.
I would add that if you go to a Spanish hospital you have to speak Spanish or take (at your own expense) an interpretor.
Try going to the town hall for even the smallest thing in anything but Spanish. Notice boards in different languages? Forget it. Official forms are in one language only and if you don't understand them then pay or tough.
Take your car for ITV (MOT) and see how far you will get in anything but Spanish. Transferring a Spanish car into your name or worse still changing a non Spanish car onto Spanish plates is impossible unless you are either fluent or pay.
Tax office? ditto
Police station? ditto.
I hope that puts the myth finally to bed. |
