"It's a nice thing to say to reassure someone that they're not an undesirable minger. It helps many a victim of timewasters. "
Does it though....how does said time waster know that it will be their loss by not meeting said person...it might be a blessing in disguise rather than a loss.. |

The person whose supposed loss it is doesn't see it as a loss because it isn't usually. Rather I meant that people say it to others to try to make them feel better. It's a flippant comment we've probably all made. I know I have when consoling friends. |

"Is it just me or does this phrase do your head in? I see it on here and on face ache and often question myself is it really their loss.... "
No. Its really Your gain- as they have shown their true colours, and you have gained an insight into them. |

not far from iceland,,,,,, tescos is nearer though :-) (near leeds) |
This is where a time machine (I believe funky monkey has one as well ) comes in handy.. you can go forward see the meet , experience it and then go back and say it's your loss knowing it to be true...

It's a term used on mainly to make the person feel better that they've been rejected.
Personally I can't see how it can be 'your loss' if you don't want to meet someone ~ you've made the choice. |

"Sometimes it's true...you should all be bereft at not having met me
Gutted, I am!
You need to get over here on a Fab tour "
I'm over in two weeks but not in your area.
It's on the cards though! |

I guess it's better than saying 'phew they had a lucky escape by not meeting you, I'm sure they found a much better offer'.
The way I look at it, it's less 'their loss' and more 'my gain' if someone turns me down, as a meet with someone who doesn't really want to be with me would no doubt be crap anyway |

Another one that makes me do a wry grin is "looks like you dodged a bullet". Often written after a lengthy complaint about someone's behaviour in which the bullet dodger paints themselves as an entirely reasonable and sane person who can't understand what went wrong. |

"I said it to a friend who was turned down for a job I knew she would have been excellent at. It genuinely was their loss in that instance."
I can understand you saying that in that instance because you actually know the person, but on here, people say it about those they've never met |

I agree if I knew the person etc then yes sometimes their loss applies but not to complete strangers. |

As with all expressions of this nature they lose impact with overuse. |

Ahh I don't like that phrase either and whenever I've posted about a guy that's bombed me out I always start my moan with saying "don't say it's their loss!" It's my loss and I want to feel shit for a minute and wallow!
