Ok genuine question here and no debates about communism here please.
Has anyone even been on one of those North Korean guided tours? If so, would you recommend it? |

No but I'm fascinated by North Korea, it's a sad existence for most of the population but how they keep the bubble going really interests me.
Plenty of "extreme tour" operators that will take you places.
Can't see many wanting to take on Somalia though  |

Just want to know if it's worth it! I know the tours are staged managed so I'm interested whether it's staged managed to the extent that you might as well stay home and watch YouTube, or whether it's worth going for the experience whilst the system lasts? |

Same. We've been to Cuba already and that's a pretty bizarre place. NK is about the only place in the world that's stranger. |

I've seen tours into reactor 3 ( shares the building with no4) but also surrounding countryside and Pripryat.
At the time astronomically dangerous but only inside the containment building now, lots of isotope have decayed away slightly to relatively benign levels.

The latter.
It's one of the worlds last great adventures.
1000 quid for five days, totally supervised + run by a licensed Chinese operator.
YouTube? That's like saying rather watch porn than do the actual deed lol.
Stage managed of course, but you will still observe a few things. And you will prob get a call from the spooks when you get home. Less face it, you'll get more stories out of prnk than most holidays!
Their 'attractions ' are some normal things like ski resort(dep time if year) - and some less than fascinating venues. What they like to call cultural experiences - museums kinda thing,

The thing is, I don't know if I can swallow the propoganda. I don't deal well with boredom and if I start getting a lecture on the great achievements of the dear leader. I don't want to argue with anyone because it's not fair on your guides / minders. But I want a glimpse into what they don't want me to see! |

Suddenly feeling like I've seriously missed something…I've been to North Korea and I went on several tours. Nothing was stage managed & there was nothing odd or bizarre about it…it wasn't the UK, but you'd expect that... I've travelled to most asian countries having visited them several times over the last 15 years or so. Parts of Korea, like every country are breathtakingly beautiful & as a tourist I had absolutely no problems. One of my most amazing times ever was attending Buddha's birthday celebrations in Korea & kite-flying in a park full of cherry blossom  |

Jeez louise, twas a joke. I think we're talking cross purposes anyway. I've been to India, China and Japan and I'd say all of them have features that are odd (in my use of the term). I mean you can get scorpions as take away food in Beijing. |

I went to the South Korea/North Korea border (dmz zone ) 7 years back, the tour is fantastic you get to see the intrusion tunnels, step into n Korea which not many people can say they've done and look in via viewing posts with telescopes definitely recommend it . X |

Yes I've heard it's clean and very safe. Cuba is also very safe for the record, safest country we've ever been to anyway. |

They also have different currencies for tourists and locals so it makes crimes a lot easier to trace. |

If you want to see poor helpless people go to east London, Birmingham or Slough
Cheaper, closer and can be home in time for tea |

From what I know, it's usually 2 guides per tour . But they would probably be experts in platitudes - so full + frank discussion most unlikely.
And as for speaking to 'locals' - you'd prob need to speak their lingo .
But like most societies, the really big questions go unspoken. Cos that's the way top power really works, quietly and out of sight.
Example.
British economy is run by the city.
You prob do , but does everyone know - what is the city ? How does it work ?
Do we know who all the aldermen are?
How they got there . Who gets seats?
If a Korean asked you who is the Lord Mayor ( one who heads up corporation of London , aka the city ) how many peeps would know?
