Well, when windows 10 was newly instealled it couldn't read my HP printer, my epson pritner, and rarely my Kingston flash drive, which is my favorite flash drive. My real hate-list for W10 is even longer, hence, if W10 is the future alternatives have to be found!
Based on the replies on here it sounds like something I at least have to give a go, but perhaps might not end up finding very practical to use in the long run.
Gotta try it though, so will look for an Ubuntu now. |

This tends to be newer hardware. Linux drivers for hardware are more often than not written by the members of the Linux community and not actual hardware developers and it's only when new harware is released that they can start to develop Linux drivers.
So if you got the latest flashy all singing all dancing PC windows is your best bet.
Or if your PC is a year or two old Linux will do the job just as well as Windows and probably do it faster. |

I'm quite excited about trying Ubuntu now, also found an article on itpro co uk "Windows vs Linux: what's the best operating system?" and even though the verdict is for Windows, the good and bad points they mention about each still makes Linux appeal to me.
I'd be willing to sacrifice a bit of (initial) user friendliness over a more secure and streamlined product. |

Seriously looking at Linux as my Windows 7 will self destruct at some point and W8 was a total disaster and I really don't see a huge change with W10.
I use my PC for business, I don't want flash features, so W10 appears alien.
Fortunately I started using PC's on Windows DOS so the concept of typing in text isn't that alien. Likely to turn an older PC over to Linux soon. |

You don't HAVE to learn commands for Ubuntu. They have an App Store and everything. |

Simple. As MS move forward with Windows versions they eventually arrive at a date that first states they are no longer developing/supporting that earlier version and then eventually a date that says they are no longer updating it for security.
It is that date that then sees your PC unable to access web-sites, etc. as it's third party users who due to their own exposures to security issues block that version of Windows. Amazon and Google will take a lead here.
W7 has, I believe, already or is about to pass the first date so with MS being so bullish about W10 the second date is less than 24 months away.
Naturally your W7 on your PC won't go "poof", you'll just be forced to dump it by MS . . . unless you permanently disconnect the Ethernet cable.  Remember MS couldn't kill off XP until they pulled the support on virus control . . . now perhaps their most successful EVER OS is sadly slipping into history.  |

Windows 7 will still have partial support for another 3 years or More perhaps by then fingers crossed ,Windows 10 will have got its act straight, thou if microsoft plan to charge folks useing it, I might go over to linux too, thou linex is more for the geek community, trust microsoft to change things when things were ok before but of course its all profit with them, they can,t seem to sort out the flaws on skype with scammers asking for permission to be friends on your profile even to gain Access that far they should,nt I,m constantly blocking them and reporting Them but makes no difference..  as everyone else does on there. |

Windows 7 is my fav but if you are coming to the open software side of life, I would highly recommend Ubuntu. However there are a lot of Linux options depending on what you are looking for.
Highly recommend looking at YouTube videos and how to set up security it's is much better in my eyes and worth learning. |

One of the biggest issues for a long term Windows user to overcome is software, I am a professional PC user and that is a "make or break" issue. Yes, I know Linux has "emulators", but can you really guarantee they will run smoothly with your W7 software?
What I will be doing is tracking down a legal but cheap copy of W8 on eBay, I will then load this to an old laptop and then take advantage of MS present offer for a "free lifetime upgrade" to W10. Remember that offer expires this Autumn at the latest. When that is done I then have an "insurance" that, if I don't or can't use Linux commercially, then I shift some of my workload to W10. |

Have a look at mint too, it's based on Ubuntu but has a few extra bits.
Also you can test it with a live version from a cd or USB. Really easy to do.
I'm 99% Linux these days only using Windows for photoshop. (other photo stuff like virtual tour and panoramic photo stichers are found on Linux and generally run quicker)
My laptop runs ubuntu and windows 7 as a duel boot. It's a few years old but everything works fine.
For newer hardware there can be a few issues normally with WiFi, but of your building a new pc with a little research you can get everything working fine. Some places even offer ubuntu on new pics.

Once one "chip" maker takes this route then others will too, that then leads to a DIY upgrade of your desktop saying "I'm sorry but you're incompatible". |

Mac OS X is a derivative of Linux so every person with an Apple computer is technically a Linux user. 
Personally I couldn't get away with other Linux offshoots, whilst very powerful operating systems the various UI's that come with each branch offend my sensibilities. |

Been Using Linux Ubuntu 15.10 for weeks now and I love it!
Still got Vista on a Desktop and a tiny backup Acer Netbook with XP, it's good to know how easily I can upgrade to Linux if I want to / need to.
As far as I'm concerned Microsoft can die a slow death!  |

you can run Ubuntu on a splip partition along side wondoze or from a USB stick....... that way you can see if you like it before taking the leap... its quiet stable but as others have said its tricky to add things that you would find normally easy in windoze ... |

i use linux all the time and love it! currently using linux mint: cinnamon for personal use, i think its my favourite linux distro after trying ubuntu, fedora, arch linux, elementary os.
i also use linux server (CentOS) in my job using the ssh protocol through Putty.
I think the world would be a better place if more people paid homage to the cause that is opensource. Firms like Microsoft and Apple are robbing us blind!
oh, and just in my opinion, the cool folk use linux! |
