***Warning this thread contains political viewpoints some readers may find distasteful ****
I've been reading stuff on Fab and other forms of social media about how misguided New New Labour are and how the leadership are all basically Commies who want to bring down the UK.
Now I'd consider myself to be an educated and informed kind of guy. Educated to masters level, good job, able to see others viewpoints and empathise in even the most difficult situation.
So with this in mind I'm really confused. From what I've seen of Jezza and the Labour party so far has been admittedly been a mixed bag, Trident, on one hand, is my main sticking point as I think nuclear proliferation works remarkably well as a concept.
However, it seems that the main reason for hatred of JC and Labour from other individuals is the fact they actually want a fairer society. Investment in the NHS and Education systems, support for people who need it most and taxation of those able to afford it.
Now I understand that the richest end of society, the 1% that holds a remarkable percentage of wealth, would be worried by this and would never support such a radical idea (after all a fair society doesn't make people rich).
What really confuses me are the people that are not particularly wealthy who have this inbuilt fear of a fairer society, where does this stem from? Why do people want poverty, illness, education and a whole host of other services to be cut? Is society really that selfish? Are people willing to let others suffer because it may cost them a couple of quid in tax every week?
I hope and pray that society is nicer than that, but something tells me that hope is misplaced!

I believe that is the crux of it - selfishness.
It's the same reason why community spirit is no longer what it was.
We've moved to adopting a more Americanised society were focus is on the individual. The problem being that each individual wants something different. |
