After losing my Mum recently, I've realised I dont have one now.
Tried talking to my oldest Daughter about it and she told me to shut up.
Do you have one ? |

Closest blood relative is your next of kin... But you can appoint anyone you want when giving next of kin details to hospitals, GPs etc.. Mine is a friend as no family and feel kids are too young |

I understand why you've done that. |

Husband is mine. He and kids named in my passport.
My sons best friend died at Xmas and even though he had a brother He was named in passport as first contact. So my son had to tell the brother then he took over. |

Isn't your daughter your next of kin?.
I always presumed your kids would automatically override your parents as next of kin.
Now I think about it, I'm not sure but if I died I'd presume my kids would inherit my money, not my mother or father? |

To be honest its not money I'm thinking about. Its funeral arrangements etc.
Made me seriously think about life insurance x |

Their is a strict hierarchy when it comes to next of kin for legal matters. Mine is my dad as kids under 18
Husband or wife
Son or daughter
Father or mother
Brother or sister
Grandparent
Grandchild
Uncle or aunt
Nephew or niece |

Checked on google and it says closest blood relative.
That excludes spouses then ? |

If no will... Closest blood relative Inherits estate. If this is kids it is split equally. Unless married then spouse does... This includes any lawful debt and funeral costs. With will you can chose who you like |

For England & Wales for inheritance & mental health act purposes spouse comes 1st - you can check on www . gov . uk / inherits-someone-dies-without-will taking out the spaces |

It's something that is automatic unless you change it. I know I was my fathers for death purposes never really thought about it. Im sure spouses must be. If my mum died it would be my stepdad doing the death certificate and everything not me.
I have actually assumed my mum was mine fuck knows what would happen to me if my son was in charge |

Debt does not pass on unless it is joint debt. It becomes a debt of the estate & must be paid by the Executors if funds are left. Debts should be paid in following order
secured debts - mortgage or loans secured against property
Funeral costs & costs of administering the estate
Unsecured debts such as credit cards, utility bills, rent, council tax etc |

I'm next of kin to one of my best friends as his brother lives abroad and I'm all he's got. My parents/brother are mine and I theirs.
Tricky when you're on your own. Speak to your daughter again. Shut up isn't great when you need her but I do think you can just put her down on forms etc and she'll deal with it as and when. |

Next of kin doesn't have to be the one who sorts those arrangements out, you could appoint an Executor of a Will and/or give someone the Power of Attorney.

Power of Attorney (once registered with the OPG) can makes decisions with regards to your finances &/or property whilst you are alive but do not have mental capacity to deal with them yourself (costs @£400 with a Solicitor but you can do yourself) but ceases on death & passes over to Executors if there is a will x |

I named my daughters mum as strange as it sounds she's 1 of my closest friends. I guess legally it should be my son but as much as I love him to death my 13 year old has more sense. as for family I can see them fighting over my estate already but guess it would make for an amusing court battle |

Ma mam died 2 days before ma 7th birthday and ma dad when I was 21. I have a half brother who emigrated to Australia with his dad before I was born.
I guess it must be one of my cousins, who are from Hull and are my mam's twin sister's children |
