I have a strange question not sure if you can help?
I have a very stressful job, which does pay well but I don't enjoy. But I want to enjoy my life rather then drop dead one day at work.
So what do you think would be a good age to take a pay cut and take a job that I would enjoy. Also how much should I have as saving at that age as backup?

I work as a teacher, I get paid well but the job is tiring, time consuming and stressful!
When I get to about 55, I'm hopefully gonna cut back and do supply work which will ease me into retirement at 60.
With regards to savings, it depends in your life style and circumstance. Only you would know how much you would need to see you through comfortably. |

I cant answer your question but i can say if we have to go to work we need to enjoy it....
Do your sums, see what you can do to compensate, eg get a lodger. Life is too short to be unhappy

Depends on your lifestyle.
Get the mortgage paid off then that gives you a big leeway to move down in salary without it impacying your day to day standard of living |

Asking for help from us is the first step towards changing things - you have recognised you have a problem that needs addressing.
Much will depend on the standard of living to which you, and crucially your partner, are used to, and whether you both would be prepared to settle for something lower. As thx said, the date you pay off your mortgage also will play a major factor, as will whether or not you have kids.
But you'd be surprised how little you need to live on once you are mortgage-free and realise the important things in life.
Good luck

Also, many jobs pay well simply because few people can hack it for many years. So make hay now. Once you have your dream, work towards it. You will find the remaining time in your job less stressful simply as you will know you are no longer trapped. |

"Age 34 and a half. You'll realise you can live on less money. No one ever had on their gravestone "he worked at the office every day" - take a while to reevaluate what you want out of life. "

If you were diagnosed with a terminal illness today ... What would you be doing or do ...?????
I suggest you think like this for two days a week for the next month ...... And your answer will come quick smart if you really embrace the scenario.

Money isn't everything but yes it helps a lot especially with the commitments we have and bills we have pay.
Health, now money can't buy that.
Real stress is a killer and lots of people don't notice it's slow build up.
Save what you consider enough, 10k at least and just quit. You'll wonder why you waited so long. Good luck |

"Sometimes life makes those decisions for you. Don't wait till it happens...make it happen on your own terms."
Absolutely. I've been a queen and country man all my life. Then two years ago I was struck down with an illness that may well kill me in the next few years. I'm now a mature student and loving it. I've finally learnt to enjoy my life but it may be to late. |

My father who will soon be 89 says "you have to keep living unit you die" and he's right, it's never too late.
I hope your "may well" turns into "not likely" and wish you well |

Thank you. And your dad is absolutely right. At first it was scary but now not so much. And I'm taking comfort in the fact that the devil knows me and him will have a falling out!
When I went for the interview for my degree course they suggested that I study part time. My reply was that I didn't want to die before completing it! |

If your salary is as good as you say, there will come a time when they think you're too expensive. Then they will get rid of you, and you may well find it difficult to get the same again (for a variety of reasons).
So enjoy these days whilst you can+ when you get that phone call, take it on the chin. + make sure you haggle for as much fuck-off money as you can |
