Good Evening Fabbers , Friends and Forumites.

I trust you all have had truly spiffing Mondays. The first day of the week can always be such a shock you the system, best faced with a strong mug of tea and stoic spirit.

Pooch and I were shocked as many of you were with the sad news of the death of David Bowie. A great musical innovator, a force in music and inspiration to many. Someone who was able to change styles and always open to new ideas and forms of expression. I think he was truly inquisitive about life and music and it’s a lesson to us all to explore ourselves and always have an open mind. Be inquisitive about life and your planet.

The news of his death opened a long and interesting conversation between Pooch and I about, people who have influenced our lives, whether it be through music , literature , art , science or other ways , friends and family.

We discussed at length people we admire ,

Here are a few we agreed on and why

Carl Sagan , for sparking in us to know about our cosmos

Ernest Shackleton, the explorer for his sense of adventure

Terry Pratchett.. his books are just so fun and such cleaver examination of modern life

Jessie Owens ,, the American black athlete who stood up to Hitler

Martin Luther King .. who inspired a generation to realise racism is never right

Rosa Parks .. for the courage to sit on a bus where she dam well liked.

Aneurin Bevan… For giving us the wonderful NHS

Barack Obama ,,, For his stance against right wing America

Bruce Springsteen.. his music and his work helping people in poor America , always down played by the press.

So here are a few people we admire ,

the list is much longer , the Last person on our list is

My Dad ,, if I can be half the man he is I will be a happy man , love you dad

So now it’s your turn

Who do you most admire ?

Have fun Chums

Taff and Pooch

My Dad would be top of my list. There are lots of people I admire but my Dad knows everything and can fix pretty much anything. If I need to know something, I call my Dad.

First & foremost I am proud of both my parents who have now gone on to a peaceful life...... I hope!!

My next person I'm proud of is Mother Teresa for all the work she did helping the poor in Africa, the fact she lived there with them & wanted for nothing more for herself..... she deserved her sainthood without a doubt!! Xxx

I admire my father for being someone who taught me the important things in life and that intelligence is more than what degree you hold.

Marc for being the smartest person I've ever known and for being so committed to his work.

My Grandmother for being the kindest person I've ever known and for teaching me that when you are kind to others you are a happier person.

manchester & NI

That's a good list Taffy.

I'd add....

Alan Turing

Emmeline Pankhurst

Bayard Rustin

Peter Tatchell

Nelson Mandela

Joyce Layland (a Manchester mother of a gay son who organised protests against the Tory's Section 28)

Aung San Suu Kyi

Elizabeth Taylor, Annie Lennox & Elton John (for their AIDS work not their artistry)

So many incredible people, but those are the ones I thought of first in terms of well known people.

I guess I would have to choose ordinary people because it's those people who have had the greatest influence on me.

So, my professor at univerity. I was a tad late for uni (26) having left school pregnant and with very few qualifications. He was and is a legend and gave me the strength to achieve my degrees and fulfil my potential.

Secondly it's got to be my son. I have four children who I am very proud of but my eldest is a real inspiration. He has been critically ill since he was a baby. He's 27 now and every day I look at him and think my heart will burst with pride. He has such humility and patience. He is my hero.

Would've recommended if if you hadn't. It's definitely horrific, but a must see. The Maze conditions were utterly shocking.

My Nan. She went to medical school and became a doctor, then a psychiatrist, back in the days when the only career options for women were nurse, secretary or teacher. She's 80 this year and she's still very young at heart, despite losing her first husband in a climbing accident when my Dad was 4, and her second husband to pancreatic cancer 7 years ago.

We went sledging with her about 6 years ago and she flung herself head first on her front down the hill on her homemade sledge! She's truly awesome

Barack Obama for not flinching from his stance on gun culture.

Steven Hawkin for having a brain no-one else can quite deal with and a brilliantly humorous way of laughing at himself.

Terry Pratchett for being awesome, hilarious, honest and unafraid.

Today, more than normally, my lovely step mum who is nearly one year in from a rather shocking revelation about why she had been wearing a 'chest infection' for months. Not normally the strongest lady I've ever known, she's thrown me by how she has dealt with the bomb shell. Today has been tricky for her, but we had a good chuckle, a good cry and a good mutual piss take on the phone. A bloody nice lady.

My 3yr old. Has multiple allergies and yet doesn't let it get him down when he's told he can't have what other kids are eating. Just puts on a brave face and continues.....breaks my heart every time.

Other than that..the late Master ip man and the Christopher Lee. Both lived through hard times and made an immense difference to my life for different reasons.

South East Midlands NOT

My mum without a doubt. So many trials and tribulations in life but she keeps wading on.

My dad too, but to a slightly lesser extent than my mum, as he's done less of the 'hard' work in life.

My nanny. The nanny I had as a child (hired help!) as she taught me so much and is still a dear friend of the family despite not having 'looked after' me since I was 6.

Myself, for not letting my health issues stop me from living my life. I'm a bit limited but not totally incapable!

So many famous people I couldn't even begin. Those who use their fame and good fortune to help other people.

For me it has to be Mario Cappechi.

He was born in Italy just before WWII, his mother was thrown in Dachau when he was 4 & he ended up on the streets fending for himself. Miraculously, both he & his mother survived, she found him after a year of searching & they headed to America. When he arrived he spoke no English & had never sat in a classroom

He became a professor at Harvard & was awarded the Nobel Prize a few years back for his ground breaking research into genetics

A giant in the scientific community, a humanitarian & a inspirational survivor

Genghis Khan

Wouldn't say i liked him, but i admire his focus

If there was ever a more driven person in human history i wouldn't want to meet him. His empire was created from nothing in under 20 years and was 4 times larger than Alexanders'. His military were the most successful of all time and are responsible for the deaths of over 50 million human beings.

He introduced a common language, a rapid communication system using horse messengers that could get a message across 200 miles in a single day. He used a decimal troop structure with ranks, field spies and intelligence networks and pioneered germ warfare by catapulting plague corpses over the walls of cities.

His siege strategy offered the conquered a chance to surrender without the needless killing of anyone if they complied. He stayed true to his wife his whole life (admittedly with 500 concubines and insane number of bastards).

He turned a group of bickering goatherds into the one of the largest Empires the world has ever seen.
