Any women on here know what's going on? Been taking Amoxicillin 500mg for what will be the 5th day today, got two days left of the course. Without being too graphic there's no moisture down there, fanny feels dry and everything feels swollen if that's the right word. Is it anything to do with the antibiotics or the pain killers been taking co-codamol 500mg it's only happened the last couple of days so it's gotta be some sort of link. |

My doctor gave me thrush treatment with antibiotics once because they cause yeast infections. Could be that or being ill you're not hydrated enough. I would wait until after the antibiotics have finished to see if anything changes. |

What!? Eeew why does antibiotics do that? Fanny isn't itchy, I had a good look at it with a mirror this morning there's nothing inside it no white no moisture it's as if I've put one of those silica sachets up there and it's sucked every bit of juice away! |

Strong antibiotics can cause thrush, and of course us ladies are prone to it already down there. eat lots of live yoghurt and get some thrush cream from Boots. You'll have it for a week, but if it doesn't go away after that go back to your GP for some pessaries. Oh, and use panty liners while you're applying the cream. |

Because they affect the pH balance in your vagina. It's just a reaction to that specific type of antibiotic so keep a note to tell your doctor so you can try others in the future.
It'll go back to normal when you stop taking them, although treating it with cream or suppositories will make it easier for you in the short term. |

Fucking great! Right so just had a little google, antibiotics kill all bacteria good and bad so I need to get some good bacteria into me, I've guy bio-kult candea supplements which are supposed to be for digestion but says it's got 1 billion live microorganisms in them so I'll take them and get some live natural yogurt and some actimel drinks.
If it came on within 4 days can I get it back to normal within days? |

Just buy Canesten and don't waste your money with other supplements. It won't last long. |

Seawitch, its very easy to get a yeast imbalance, and many natural ways to get rid of it. You can also get pessaries from the chemist over the counter although they mess with your liver .... to be honest, you have been lucky to have never had one before. |

I've already got the supps I'll take them. Usually buy actimel anyway just haven't done a tidy food shop the last couple of weeks. I'll buy the canesten today, antibiotics finish Tuesday. When would a fanny be able to have sex again? |

A week or so, whenever the symptoms pass. Antibiotics should be finished, then you'll feel the difference, especially if you've started with Canesten in the meanwhile. It's possible for it to be transmitted during sex as well. |

"Agree with the possible thrush.... Drink cranberry juice or orange/lemon barley water xx"
That's for cystitis.
Your vagina is full of bacteria that keep it in tip-top condition. Amoxicillin is a broad spectrum antibiotic meaning it doesn't care what bacteria it kills, even the good ones. It's a common side effect.
In the meantime, get treatment. A one off oral usually does the trick and the cream will help with the itch. Stop eating sugar as this helps the growth of bacteria (that includes all carbs).
Taking oral probiotics will also help your gut heal as that would have been altered by the Abx too.
There are some complimentary therapies that also work, Google those. Tell your GP what happens so s/he will know for next time. |

Part one
Antibiotics kill most bacteria , good and bad,
Thrush is always present and good bacteria keep the fungus calm
Part two
Although the above is true , you have repeatedly said your symptoms do not exactly correlate to vaginal Thrush
Antibiotics do cause other side effects and it would concern me if you treat yourself only for Thrush when you may also need some other treatment
De hydration is my guess but don't guess with your precious body go find out from a doctor
When dehydrated , drinking just more fluids although better than nothing , it is usually required to use a mix of hydration salts
It sounds you have a tooth abscess? |

Ask your doctor. Depends on your current dose and the interactions, it may come back if you're on a high dose. Cream will ease symptoms in meanwhile.
I don't believe in those probiotics, the hydrochloric acid in your tum will kill any benefit with those small doses. Cream and suppositories and pill if you prefer would be more than enough. |

Forget the yogurt/ actimel nonsense; it's just that; nonsense.
None of the so- called " good bacteria" in those things goes anywhere as your natural stomach acid kills them all off immediately .
One of my very good freinds is very prone to thrush attacks: some people are just unlucky that way; the antibiotics may have made it worse; she tells me you should just try and belt it with one of those cream/pill combos .
If it persists, insist your doctor gives you a more powerful one. |

Being prone to thrush is not unlucky, it's a symptom of something that has yet to be discovered. Chasing symptoms with ever more powerful drugs will never get to the root cause. |

Good advice , orally taken bacteria , even when effective is only to reinstate the gut flora , for vaginal you would need a vaginal suppository
How long have you been on the codeine? Hope no more than 3 days , codeine can also dehydrate and this could be the cause of dryness
Too much guess work for my liking

Yeh it does. They're not regulated as heavily as medicines so are inconsistent in production. The only strong evidence is in helping with antibiotic related diarrhoea, every other study is only a weak link. Plus the price outweighs the actual benefits.
However, if they make someone believe they feel better, then maybe they're worth it. |

Actually it does
There is a vast amount of research on the "actimel " probiotics and it's stable mates and the general conclusion is
No harm but relatively ineffective at supplying the gut with an effective dose
Obviously one can get from ones doctor a dose that will be effective , I have just taken such a tablet , since having a course of antis
If actimel makes you feel better I think fantastic and worth a try for anyone .but if you have taken anti s and want to be sure then the prescribed tablets do work as. |

On this bio kult 7 strain formula it says it has 1 billion live bacteria that can survive the high acidity of the stomach.
Been taking the codeine since Wednesday so 4 days same as the antibiotics, been drinking loads of water though but maybe not enough cos I've been waking up thirsty.

The canesten with the oral tablet and cream has always sorted me out within a day or two at the max. The pessary type doesn't work as well.
I agree that persistent thrush can be a sign of something more sinister but very occasional thrush brought on by a course of antibiotics is easily tackled and doesn't have to mean you need to devote your life to probiotics. |

I took antibiotics for a few months once and get thrush down stairs.
I was told the antibiotics can't separate the good bacteria from the bad bacteria so they just kill both.

Says it's an oral you take once and reviews say it works instantly, so take that now or the day the antibiotics end? That plus all the good bacteria supps I'll take, I'll eat a fuck tonne of live yogurt and drink actimels all day every day, should get it back to normal pretty quick?
Ask your doctor. Depends on your current dose and the interactions, it may come back if you're on a high dose. Cream will ease symptoms in meanwhile.
I don't believe in those probiotics, the hydrochloric acid in your tum will kill any benefit with those small doses. Cream and suppositories and pill if you prefer would be more than enough.
I respect that you don't believe in probiotics but the evidence doesn't support your belief."
Actually pretty much all research shows they have little to no impact.
For gut bateria the best way to recolonise is....a fecal transplant.
An yeah its what it sounds like lol.
Also seawitch unless your plumbing is really messed up any bateria you put in your mouth aint gonna be making it to your fanny :p
I supose you could shove youghurt up there but inimagine that causes a whole host of other issues.

Although everyone is quick to jump to thrush, it could also be the codeine in the co-codemol. It's a phosphate (salt) so can cause dehydration which will usually make your mouth feel very dry as well as preventing your Bartholins gland from producing as much lubricant as normal,
It can also cause thrush symptoms or aggravate thrush if you already have it due to the antibiotics. You could try not taking it for about 3 days and see if there's any change |

Natural live yoghurt is fine and beneficial, if messy. Panty liners are required.
Yoghurt with sugar or fruit in, not so much! |

"Yeast infection from the antibiotics. See your pharmacist for help.
What!? Eeew why does antibiotics do that? Fanny isn't itchy, I had a good look at it with a mirror this morning there's nothing inside it no white no moisture it's as if I've put one of those silica sachets up there and it's sucked every bit of juice away! "
The antibiotics will also attack the good bacteria in the gut which is why it's not uncommon to get an upset stomach (possible diarrhoea) and for ladies to get thrush after taking them. Supposedly having a spoonful of probiotic yogurt after your tablet helps avoid these as it restores some of the good bacteria. |

"Agree with the possible thrush.... Drink cranberry juice or orange/lemon barley water xx
Tell your GP what happens so s/he will know for next time."
Cranberry juice can also help thrush as it is acidic x |

It may not be thrush.. Then you use a treatment for thrush.. And could upset the natural balance.. Resulting in possibly thrush.... or vaginitis
If you don't want to see own gp then a walk in centre or sexual health clinic can help x |

Are you itchy now? I thought it was just dry, which is why I said wait until after the antibiotics are finished. You don't want to treat for thrush if you don't have it. |
