Consistency

Hiya and Happy Friday!

I was just having a think today (I know, never good!) and I was considering how consistent I am in my behavior and beliefs/opinions. When I think about how I act, and what I believe, I try very hard to be internally and externally consistent. That is to say, beliefs that I have should be consistent with one another and how I act should fit with those beliefs.

I was wondering how you all feel about this? I mean this in a broad, not a specific sense. Have you ever acted in a way that was inconsistent with your beliefs/opinions? I would guess most probably have. If/When you did, did you then change your opinion, or were you happily inconsistent? Or is it something you never gave much thought to?

Please do not turn this into a moralistic campaign or an anti-religion thread. I mean it as a general question. It doesn't even necessarily relate to morals - it could be something you've never liked that you ended up doing (like "I don't like when bikers go through red lights, then you go through a red light when biking to save time). I'm simply interested in how important consistency is to you - and whether you change your opinions based on your actions or the reverse, or neither.

So, I look forward to your interesting and understanding thoughts.

-Courtney

I am happily inconsistent. I can change my mind if I want to. I can have different views on different things. It's good.

Cognitive dissonance can be a very good thing on occasions; I am very set in my thinking and ensuing actions but there is much to be said for occasionally venturing outside those comfort zones, mentally and in reality.

It is the nature of the human condition to change, and a result of that change may well be to do things that I once said 'never'.

In terms of consistent actions and morals I do try and be as even as possible as these little things I find very irritating and to my mind, point to lack of either self awareness or selfishness. Neither of which I like as a personality trait

Understanding your sentiment , I feel exactly the same

This does not mean I'm not open to changing my perspectives , on the contrary I hope they are perpetually evolving , however if one part does change I'd try to ensure that bit of learning or new understanding diffuses into all other aspects of my life, thoughts actions and philosophy xx

Yes, it's extremely important to me, the concept was always in the first line of my profile ie '100% authentic.......' by which I mean consistency between in my public and private persona, as well as between my beliefs and behaviour.

I also feel it is important to be consistent on a personal basis - that's what I want from people, so that's what I give.

I'm not always consistent.

For example.. I believe that my child shouldn't eat treats before his dinner. However if we have to go to the supermarket when I've collected him from school, hes tired from school, I've been at work, he's hungry, we are going to be late home for dinner, I need to get the shopping done without him whinging in my ear I won't hesitate to give him a packet of smarties to keep him quiet while I whizz round the store

Disclaimer: this does not happen often and is the main reason I usually get my shopping delivered as my child thinks tesco is an all you can eat buffet
