I think from my point of view, as a non smoker who has nothing against smokers.....if a potential meet smokes very occasionally in a social situation (perhaps on a Saturday night out with friends) then I can see them putting "non smoker". It's unlikely they would ever turn up to a meet having recently smoked a cigarette.
However if they smoke every day, even just one or two, I'd think they should identify as "smoker".

"Ok how many alcoholic drinks a day until you call yourself an alcoholic...?"
It's more about the time of day... if it's the first thing you do when you get out of bed then I'd guess there's a problem.
Just out of interest... where are you going with this? |

Can't you guess?
(I'm still coming to terms with the fact I have to fumigate Mrs ddc before kissing her if she's given someone else a blowjob...)
And now I'm wondering if by fumigating her, that makes her a smoker...

I think if it's something done regulalry - so every time you go to the pub, or every time you go out on a lunch break from work, enough for it to be a habit, then you are a smoker. |

If you don't smoke anymore then you are an ex-smoker, i remember being able to tick the non smoker box on a medical form after I had given up for over a year.
My understanding is you're an alcoholic if you are dependant & can't function without drink. |

No, it makes you a drinker. Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol rather than just a liking of it.

So if you like smoking occasionally (not addicted) you're not a smoker? |

No you're still a smoker.
I quit smoking & then went back to it 'socially' for Life Insurance purposes I had to say I was a smoker even tho I might only smoke a few times a month. |

No Smoker isn't the smoking equivalent of Alcoholic... I suppose the equivalent would be a Fag-a-holic or something like that....
Basically if you light your next cig with the one you've just put finished then that's on par. |

If you smoke then surely your a smoker, the amount is irrelevant
I only smoke when I'm having a drink, if I didn't go out for a month then I wouldn't smoke for a month, but even though I packed up smoking regular many years ago I still get the urge to smoke when I have a drink, don't know why it don't bother me any other time but it don't
I still label myself as a smoker as if I meet somebody off here the chances are we will meet socially in a pub first therefore I will have a fag |

I hate smoking, most stupid thing I ever started. Haven't had one for the second day now but that's cos they are physically making me sick and hurting my throat cos I'm ill. Still have 16 in the pack though I'm hoping I can quit off the back of this illness. |

The term smoker implies regularity and frequency, i.e. habitual.
I wouldn't call someone who has a cigar on special occasions a smoker, but I would say anyone who has more than 2 or 3 every day is. |

I'm not sure that the term smoker implies any frequency what so ever. It just states that someone does smoke. They could be an occasional SMOKER, but that's still a smoker.
To me a non-smoker is someone who won't smoke anything at any point. If they will smoke (anything) than they are a smoker..
That's my view anyway.

It's an imprecise term. But if someone has the odd glass of sherry at christmas and birthdays, are they a drinker? |

Yes, because a non-drinker wouldn't have a glass of anything alcoholic at any time of the year.... because they're a non-drinker |

I personally drink very rarely... a handful of times a year, but I still count myself as a drinker (not a non-drinker)

Last year i smoked my pipe (oo-er) approximately 8 times. So on advice from this thread i have changed my profile to 'smoker' now though i can't meet People who won't meet smokers. Even though i know very well when the sun comes out I'll put my pipe away until next winter and be training on my bicycle. Even though, as i sit here now i haven't smoked since Christmas day. Still people won't meet smokers ( the fact I'm also a twat has nothing to do with it...) |

Yes, as they drink. If you smoke, you are a smoker. quantity makes no difference in my humble opinion.
Maybe a person could be described as a light smoker or occasional smoker, but ultimately, still a smoker as they smoke. |

If there is a fair likelihood that you have had a cigarette/pipe/cigar on the day of a meet then "smoker" is the box to tick. If you had a cig with mates on Saturday but haven't since then you are not going to smell of smoke today.
Mind you with the pub ban, social smoking has disappeared. It's seen as antisocial now.
I last smoked anything about seven years ago when I had a cigar at a achool reunion. |
