Are there any subjects / topics that should never be used in comic routines.
Should everyone curb their laughter for fear of offending others ?
If you ARE amused does someone have the right to demand that you change your s.o.h ?
Should their emotional/political views encroach on your outlets ?
When is it appropriate to laugh ? When is it not ? |

I get sent jokes all the time via my mobile and i specify that i dont like racist ones, i find them hugely offensive
Constant swearing is another one that puts me off too
I love Lee Evans but i find that whilst everyone is laughing hysterical, i wonder what was funny, have to watch it several times before i understand |

"...but generally something that does not upset or offend individuals is fine"
By your standard there would be no comedy on TV. Everyone has a different threshold for taking offence.
Even today, certain people will write complaints to the TV station if a mild swear word is broadcast before 8 pm.

Some things that make me roll around laughing probably would'nt do the same to another person
Humour is different for everyone
I would'nt post half the jokes I get sent on these forums because I know that there is always someone that would be offended so I giggle away to myself instead |

I agree. What some find funny, other's find hugely offensive. I find Kevin Bloody Wilson hilarious and partly because he rips the piss out of everyone, every country, all sexual scenarios, including incest. He is crude but also clever. I must admit, sometimes I cringe because he does go too far, but I'd rather he goes too far than curbs it. His swearing is prominent which many find hugely offensive but swearing doesn't bother me at all if it's done cleverly. On the other hand, I find Roy Chubby Brown highly unfunny, even when he sings Kev Bloody Wilson's songs, somehow when he does it, they're not funny to me. So I think it's in the deliverance of the piece as much as the content. I used to love Billy Connolley, I find the truth is often the most funny comedy because we can relate to it. I don't find Billy as funny now because his jokes are more Hollywood, because he is Hollywood now. I don't relate as much though still I find him funny in parts. Jack Dee is my all time favourite. I just love him and I'm usually in tears by the end of his set. There are others I find funny but can't remember right now. I must admit I do like the more risque the better comics. I do like a rebel who's not afraid to go all out there and say what others are too scared the PC police will grab them for if they dare |

To answer the OP's original question, no there are no subjects / topics that should never be used in comic routines.
The deciding factor on whether it's funny or not is totally dependant on who is doing the routine and in what context they are talking about the subject.
Context is everything. |

My parents loved the Black and White Minstrels, Bernard Manning, Jim Davidson et al...none of which amused me!
I on the other hand find the likes of Chris Rock absolutely hilarious. My parents would have found him hugely offensive and switched him off.

For me the thing I think should be taboo is jokes about kids being abused.
I don't think humiliating people is funny....but I wouldn't class it as a taboo.
No, I don't think anyone should tell me what I can laugh at.
I think if you know something is probably not going to appeal to the masses, then I might hide my amusement. |

I'd like to say that nothing is taboo, that every topic is permissable but I cannot.
I can't handle child abuse jokes ( no i haven't been abused nor has anyone I know ) I am becoming more accepting that it is widespread and cultural dependent but I still cannot hear a joke without visualising the child - so it physically moves me.
I have heard the argument that comedians are social observationists and commentators after all that is how they connect with their audience. Some argue that their jokes serve to alleviate the pain felt in the manner of if you didn't laugh it would kill you. So kill me. It's NOT funny.
Some comedians need to get off their pedastals .... the likes of Frankie Boyle - who was amongst my favourite comedians until his 'brave' try at his own show which was sick in the extreme.
They seem to think that they highlight issues we need to be aware of. Bollocks they want to raise a laugh - it feeds them and whilst I say 'long may it continue to do so ' I still feel they are placing themselves above their station.
In fairness to Boyle I'd love to have a chat with him. Although his show sickens me - when I think about it he shows NOTHING that doesn't make news on a daily basis. I just want to hide from it. Maybe he doesn't want to let me.
I get jokes on my mobile too. Never respond. They are usually juvenile and dated.
Some of the answers here have given me food for thought. Some very insightful ones. I asked for a reason. xx |

To laugh at something is not to say that the person laughing is not sympathetic to any 'horrors' to which the joke alludes. Often it's just the opposite. Human nature is such that laughter and fear are closely related. Throughout the animal kingdom too. A chimp will 'laugh' when it's fearful.
It's a natural way to deal with some things that we can often find abhorrent. |

Interesting point. A 'friend' once made a child abuse joke re m. Jackson and I screeched not funny. She said it's just a joke. So i told a joke about her grandson being abused. She was livid ! Who'd have believed it eh ?
It's just a joke to the joker but do those who don't find it funny have the right to stamp up n down ? |

They have the right to find it not funny, but not necessarily the right to stamp up and down.
What's sicker?
A Michael Jackson child abuse joke?
Or the media and large sections of society ignoring the fact that the man was seriously deranged and had, at the very least, an inappropriate interest in children for a man of his age?
I know which one makes me want to 'stamp up n down'... |

I would tell the person I didn't find the joke funny about child abuse, but I couldn't tell them what they should be laughing at. I might think of them differently though, rightly or wrongly, but like you, it just makes me think of the kid..even if it is an imaginary one.
( and no, not been abused either, I just think my motherly instinct kicks in ) |

I wouldn't have thought you need neither to have been abuse nor have a 'motherly instinct' to feel for an abused child |

I like history and come across the role of the Jester in days of yore ....the archetypal fool...one that fascinates me is Nasrudin the Fool..its a way humour is used as a teaching tool...but I digress...lol
The best fools (comics) to my taste, use parody and satire to highlight a truth. Sometimes on issues I`d rather not confront. hence my squirming Lol
I think they can exist in shadow or light ....sometimes biting, hurtful and using humour as entertainment, or as above to turn things upside down and use the absurd etc to reveal a hidden truth.....
Mabye they all stand on a perch and throw things around ...sometimes in shadow ...sometimes in light...I think thats their nature and the true fools ..raisons detre...
Seems to me there`s plenty of fakes around...and they see the potential in the shadow....biting cruel jokes as entertainment and revel in their own notiriety and or shock value ....and seek taboo subjects as a currency...
To me humour doesn`t have to be taboo....and the only one I`d draw exception to is kids ....
As an aside I`ve always thought sarcasm is the highest form of wit..if its used as revealing a truth ....and the revelation makes you laugh ...positive rather than negative ...
Anyhows was just musing with a cuppa so I thought I`d gabble on abit .... |

I will explain my comment for the pedantic.....I was agreeing with Granny on one comment on one of her posts that I also havn't been abused so it wasn't because of that that made me feel for children who had been abused.
At no time did I imply that you need a motherly instinct to feel compassion for abused children, I was answering for ME and what I thought as to why jokes about abused children don't make me laugh. |

There are plenty of things that i personally find distasteful, but if someone laughs at something that i find distasteful i know where not compatable so ive been known to delete friends from my telephone for sending what i consider to be sick jokes. On the flip side there are things that amuse me that others may find distasteful. I find it sad that well known comdedians have to make bad taste jokes to get a cheap laugh when they dont need too.
But someone will always be offended ( i dont get offended) by whatever some say |

My favourite comedian at the moment is Sarah Millican ....she can laugh at herself! Some things are a bit risque but I sit there and nod thinking 'yeah that is so true'. She also takes the piss out of men to usually a majority of women audiences. |

Before anyone jumps on the bandwagon at me, like anyone else on this site i like at least the odd dirty joke. But when someone can only tell or find funny dirty jokes, it makes my skin crawl and the hair stand on back of my neck. Makes me think - pervert? And disrespectful.
Same goes for racist jokes or any other kind of jokes. Im irish (and as thick as they come) and i love agood irish joke. But when someone cannot do anything but poke fun at thick irish he/she just makes themselves look like an idiot.
I think the following joke is hilarious, embarassingly always have done.
Why did the chicken cross the road?
To get to the other side! Duh.

I weas once told that the stereotype of the 'thick Irish' cam from the days when the Anglo-Irish Gentry employed local Irish staff & considered them to be almost subhuman. The Irish response was to play up to the stereotype to the point of ridicule, in other words the Irish were taking the piss out of their 'betters'.
Don't know how true it is but its a good story! |

Exactly, its taking the stereotype the the point of the grotesque to parody the stupidity of thought that created the ideal in the first place.
Acting really stupid (because they treat you that way) will slow everything down, wind up the bosses etc. |

A joke about the actual act of child abuse is NOT funny, but a joke taking the piss out of Gary Glitter is. The paedophile is the one being ridiculed and that, to me, is acceptable.
But would you find this funny:
Did you hear about the Jewish paedo who asked a little girl if she'd like to buy a sweetie?
Is that funny? To some, yes, to others, maybe not.
It's human nature to find humour in most things and it's up to the individual to assess the material presented and decide whether it crosses a personal line for them. It's quite different to have a TV programme broadcasting to millions that features highly sensitive material.
Would we, as a nation, have laughed at the Princess Di jokes that did the rounds in the days immediately following her death? She was the nation's darling and any jokes about didn't rasie a laugh from me, but anti-royalists would have had a field day with it. It doesn't make it wrong though.
Did you hear about the Irish hijackers who hijacked an airship and bounced it off Canary Wharf three times?
An obvious take on 9/11 but it IS funny.
Humour is subjective, and only you can decide what tickles your funny bone. |
