Roll on March when the gym gets quieter.
I'm all for people exercising, it's not easy, but people's willpower just disappears.
It's the same every year. Guys especially, they come in to the gym, throw a few dumbells around, don't put them back on the rack, then check themselves out in the mirror and text on their phone for 10 min.
Rant over.
Those 5 x 1 hour councilling sessions I got for Christmas were worth it.

Ah we were all newbies once.
Good luck to them all and hopefully they will keep it up.
I agree with some of your rant tho, a guy was sat on a bench under the smith machine having a full convo with his friend about their upcoming weekend on the piss.. For 20 minutes! |

I saw something on Fb recently which was quite good....something like;
'Stop complaining about all the newbies in your gym in January, after all we don't complain about all of you filling up our pubs in December'

"I'm back on insanity workout next week, did it the end if last year so I'll give it another 9 weeks "
Insanity is hardcore Kez. Nice one. It's probably the most emotional workout I've done ha.
Happly New Year to you.

I started going in October and have noticed it being busier this week. I have no problem with it, we all want to better ourselves. If people are using a machine that I need, I just go use another until it's free |

Monday night, some guy was on the squat rack doing supersets of squats, bench press, and some other random stuff for about 15 min. His form was questionable and he hasn't been seen in there since....
The gym was rammed with a queue for the rack, really pissed a few regulars off. I was paying my PT for a session at the time too
I'm all for people training and we have got to start somewhere but they don't want help to get their form right, at weekends they are back in the pub and spend most of their time on their phones or looking pretty.
If someone is serious about their goals they don't EVER look pretty and will consider other gym users before hogging the equipment. |

"I'm a January newbie but the gym is new & only opened at 3pm today!!
Stick with it JP, just don't go too hard. It's supposed to be fun "
It's been 10 years since I was last in a gym & 2 years since I last exercised due to injury so it was a shock to the system!!
I spent longer on the treadmill than I planned but there was a lovely bum in front of me |

Yeah, but there's a certain etiquette expected of you at any gym.
For me, nothing worse than kids hogging any equipment because they're glued to their bloody phones! |

Everyone pays their fee, some even pay to train with a PT.
There is a certain etiquette in gyms, like wiping your equipment down or doing 15 minute supersets in the squat rack when theres a queue.
Don't you find it tedious in a club when one couple hogs a private room? |

We all have to start somewhere. I've been putting it off for the past 2months as I have a baby and December is such a busy time. I started at the gym last week as the children were back at school and so far I'm loving it! |

Same here and the posters also ask users to respect others and be considerate.
I've often shared a machine with someone else, made my rest periods slightly longer but it was ok and we both got our sets in. |

I prefer the gym being busy. The classes are easier to hide in when they are full
And the gym I go to doesn't allow mobiles phones in the gym or classes. |

I agree. Regulars at the gym I attend are welcoming and friendly, but if you are inconsiderate of other users then they may get a less warm welcome.
I usually find a polite request does the job.

They want to pay a monthly subscription and go sit on a bench and look at their phone - while occasionally putting in the odd rep - up to them. |

It's a gym not a phone box!! ALL phones should be left in lockers. Do your 40-60 minute work out and then collect ur stuff and play with ur fone then.....some folk actually prefer their gym to be for working out! I have actually seen the staff at my gym moving folk on if they are doing hee-haw. |

It's everyone's business as long as they subscribe to using the gym and it's equipment. It's not acceptable to hog equipment whilst on your phone. Peopleseem to grget away with it in the chain gyms but if they tried it in a small privately run gym they'd be out on there arse. |

i dont like this attitude. surely people should be encouraging of people trying to change themselves rather than patronising and making them feel unwelcome there?
I know a lot of people who are put off going to gym because they feel that the 'regulars' will judge them for being there as they are not buff gym bunnies admiring their reflection in the mirror by the free weights.
Not me, i dont give a shit, i go there for me, not anyone elses approval. |

Oh believe me, they need all the sub's they can get but wouldn't bat an eye at the loss of a complete tosser getting in the way of regulars workouts. Only regular gym goers will understand

Not at all.
But then the regulars money is no better than a member who has just joined. Just because someone is a regular doesn't give them any more rights
But its nothing to do with being a regular or the quality of your money. Its about respect and consideration. Also, if they're staring at their phones all the time, then they're not really working out so why are they there in the first place?
Up to them and not anybody else's business.
They want to pay a monthly subscription and go sit on a bench and look at their phone - while occasionally putting in the odd rep - up to them.
It's everyone's business as long as they subscribe to using the gym and it's equipment. It's not acceptable to hog equipment whilst on your phone. Peopleseem to grget away with it in the chain gyms but if they tried it in a small privately run gym they'd be out on there arse.
And hopefully the small private gyms can survive on fewer subscriptions paid by the "regulars""
Let's put this another way that non gym goers might understand....
You pay £35 to get into a club as a single male, you find a lady you want to play with and the only private room has been in use by one couple for 2 hours and they are spending most of their time chatting.....
Now do you understand? |

"i dont like this attitude. surely people should be encouraging of people trying to change themselves rather than patronising and making them feel unwelcome there?
I know a lot of people who are put off going to gym because they feel that the 'regulars' will judge them for being there as they are not buff gym bunnies admiring their reflection in the mirror by the free weights.
Not me, i dont give a shit, i go there for me, not anyone elses approval."
Me too I'm there for my own gain, no fuckers else |

I'm all for new members (look at my earlier post). We're talking about ignorant, inconsiderate individuals on their phones hogging equipment. I'm all for more new people of all abilities joining the gym. |

"Monday night, some guy was on the squat rack doing supersets of squats, bench press, and some other random stuff for about 15 min.
If they have paid the gym fee - it's up to them what they do.
Yeah, but there's a certain etiquette expected of you at any gym.
For me, nothing worse than kids hogging any equipment because they're glued to their bloody phones!
As long as the member sticks to the actual rules of gym membership then they are good to go.

Exactly. I'm hardly a gym bunny I'm a work in progress but I'm dedicated.
I've become friendly with the long term regulars because I respect that they also have sets to do etc and work my arse off. |

I get what you are saying but there is such thing as putting a point across in the gym or wherever without making someone feel like shit because they are new...it's the same as the forums people complain that they are not made to feel welcome... |

oh...to be fair i didnt read the whole thing lol soz...as you were
although i have 2 gyms at work that i use now and in one of them you cant take your phone in at all. i take mine in the other one but usually to use a 7 minute circuit app i have on there.
it can be amusing at any time when you see the beautiful young ladies in a gym who spend an hour on the bike but have a full face of make up on and never break out in a sweat but if that's how they want to spend their evening who am i to say they cant?
and the protein shake drinking 'muscle' boys with their hoodie tank tops on and grey joggers who sound like they are cumming when they leg press....they amuse me too. perhaps they are who the make up girls are there to see? Maybe i am missing a trick and this is the new way to pick up guys? |

I'm there 5 days a week, even went when I had a bad cold, felt better for the exercise. I put my body through what feels like hell and look a red sweaty mess after.
I've met some pretty cool people who motivate and give a pat on the back.
I like the newbies with a similar attitude. It's the pretty boys and girls there to pose, they obstruct others and are usually the ones to snigger or give dirty looks. |

"It's great all these people subsidising the gym for the regular attendees. Helps keep the fees down and affordable. Our local gym is becoming quieter already after the new year rush."
I agree. I mentioned earlier that 90% of the new members won't be there at the end of the month. I'm looking forward to the summer rush already |

I really want to join a gym, I mean I really would like to, have lost a lot of weight just recently but would love to concentrate on some upper body strength, would love a nice toned six pack they seem to go down well on here. |

"Roll on March when the gym gets quieter.
Ha ha
I prefer the gym being busy. The classes are easier to hide in when they are full
And the gym I go to doesn't allow mobiles phones in the gym or classes."
Reading this is i am surprised any gym would allow people to bring in mobiles, surely they should be confined to lockers. I don't think I would want to go to a gym which allowed mobiles in the gymnasium. |
