Well that time is here again where I've been thinking about where to go. This year I have 12 weeks off in the summer. I've never had so much time off so I've made a decision. 4 to 6 weeks traveling South East Asia. Now I've been to Vietnam before so I'm having a few days there before setting off through Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and possibly Burma.
Other than just showing off, I was looking for advice. I'd love to know if any fabbers have done the backpacking thing and if so what are your experiences of staying in a hostel as I've only ever done hostels in eastern Europe and they're a right laugh. However I've never roughed it alone in Asia before.
Any advice would be welcome. |

We did the backpacking thing in southeast Asia a few years back. Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Laos. We were there three weeks. Some amazing times.
I'm on my phone at the moment so can't type much, but if you send me a pm then I'll write up some advice later when I get home.

We went from singapore, through thailand ,cambodia onto china, our son came back from thailand last year after spending a year there, accommodation right across asia is cheap, although thailand has got alot more expensive its still cheap, use dollars in cambodia, and get a cambodian guide to show you ankor wat,the chinese virtually own siem reap now,so a little dearer but still dirt cheap, have a great time |

Prague and New York |
We spend lot of time in Asia backpacking.
Once a year, few times few months, many times few weeks.
In summer is better weather in Indonesia then un Thailand.
We like Thailand, but its now really touristy place.
So now we use Thailand as base and then we go to countries around- Burma, Laos, SW China...
Then its nice after few weeks of traveling have "holidays from holidays" on a beach for week or so.
In Pataya in Thailand is almost weekly in one bar meeting of swingers. Try it.
Hostels / pensions are OK. Its not luxurius, but friendly environment where you will meet lot of new interesting peoples.
You will enjoy your trip.
Only one hint - pack as small backpack as possible. You will not need to much clothes at all.

I slummed it in Hong Kong - stayed at the Novotel - wasn't too bad
Went to Macau - was a bit better at the Sheraton
Would advise anything cheaper - might not be nice |
