Car Insurance Prices

Hey everyone!

I was looking online for car insurance about 5 weeks ago. I got a price with Hastings. £280. A good price.

I've just come to buy it now, ofcourse, the quote has expired so I refreshed it.

The price has shot up to £420! It's exactly the same car and driver, no changes at all other than the start date!

What the hell?!? Does anyone here work for a broker? Can you explain what's happened?

Right now, I think I have a better chance of understanding a woman than these insurance premium calculation algorithms!

Change your start date to a few days later and the quote will go down. The sooner you want the insurance to start the more they jack the prices up simple because they know a lot of people will pay it if they need it badly.

I fell out with Hastings over this.... They also tried to increase the price few days after I'd renewed.

I then tried to cancel and they told me there was a cancellation fee even though it was only few days into the policy.

I told them I wasn't paying it... They chased me for a year afterwards but I never did pay it.

I'd never go with them!!

Could this turn into a Hastings bashing thread??

Been with them a few years now, but every year despite no claims, the value of my car depreciating, the renewal still comes through £130 more. Always get it to roughly what I paid the previous year.

In fact one year I got a quote, called them the next day, had go e down by another £10, that doesn't happen to often

The cancellation fee is par for the course as I've cancelled one within the cooling off period

This sounds about right as I asked for a quote on a golf convertible and the pm price (as I want to know that more than the whole price) was around £50 but when I went in to buy it, it was suddenly £70 so I went elsewhere.

Incidentally when you are buying insurance, find out what the cost is to make changes to your policy once you have bought it as I have had to do that with mine and it costs £25

Swerve Hastings. I'm in the insurance industry and wouldn't touch them. What you've experienced is common with some direct markets, they will have targets to meet so at times they will reduce premium rates to buy the business in.

Try going via top cashback. You can sometimes get a decent quote with the added bonus of some money back.

Standard insurance, I'd go with Aviva, and no I don't work for them , am a broker, rock and roll huh!!

Can't agree there, insurance price depends on the car, I have always found Aviva expensive along with all those for women and in fact almost double the cheapest quot

Top advice about the fee. It's why some quotes are so much cheaper. Some insurers have no administration charge for changes as long as they're done online during the policy year. The majority will charge a mid term cancellation fee though.

It's hugely variable depending on car, area, age and plenty of other factors. Not a one shoe fits all sadly. Worth checking out reviews on sites regarding claims service also as that's when you find out how good, or not, they are.

Near Carmarthen

Got a renewal through from Green Flag (part of Direct Line) for my Breakdown Recovery Insurance (with 4 years 'no call out discount'). Checked the price online as a new customer and it was nearly half. Phoned them up to tell them to cancel it on renewal, to be told they could match it. Told them to feck off.

The insurance industry is just one pile of scumbags.

Had already cancelled my Direct Line motor poloicies last year as they had been trying the same trick with those. Now with Aviva.

Ouch! Mine was £2500 last year because I was a new driver, every company play a game which is why most of the time they will price match with a cheaper company a. So they look good and b. To keep the business.

I had a real go over the phone with Hastings last month.

Put them on the spot about a number of things. I knew the girl on the other end of the phone was being recorded, so wouldn't answer my questions straight.

Felt a lot better afterwards.

I get quotes as early as possible , then buy the cheapest one as most of the time my renewal is always more expensive than the cheapest quote.

That's what I tried doing, only when I try to purchase a new policy, the price increases.

There's no point getting a quote, if you can't buy it at that price.

These four figure prices - what a rip-off!

I paid £284 and wasn't happy with that.

I'm with hastings, did the quotes, great! Got the car, went to purchase the insurance, price had jumped up. So I phoned them and went through it. They quoted cheaper over the phone but not as cheap as original. Bit of haggling later and got it for the original price, plus 12.50 fee for doing it over the phone!

£12:50 for doing it over the phone - I refused to pay that. They wouldn't budge.

I wouldn't budge, either. Dug my heels in further.

They gave in... eventually.

Then, I told them I'd changed my mind.

They'd pissed me off with increasing the quote price at the time of purchase.

Luckily, I got it cheaper in the end, all in, from somewhere else, although still £35 more than my original quote.

Fuckers...

Everything makes a difference, even down to where it's parked..I found "parked in a garage" to be more expensive than "parked on the street"

My normal quote was £900 a year so came to renewal and £1500! With no claims accidents etc so browsed online got a quote of £900 have a guess with who my own insurance company so for being loyal I would of got bent over and for being a new customer I get the full bj treatment so after kicking off I left and got a quote for £820 else where.

I've lost count of the amount of online policies I've signed up to over the years where the price mysteriously creeps up when the paperwork arrives

Dirty little toads!
