Life without work...

Bear with me here, it's my first day back at work after a long holiday break 
So, if you didn't have to work for a living, what would you do with your time? I think a lot of people would travel, so that is a given, but what I mean is what day to day things would you do with yourself?
I'll answer the question first - if I didn't have to work I would spend my time volunteering at animal charities (like Dog Trust) and exploring the outdoors. Maybe even open up my own shelter.

I joined an adult education class in jewellery after years of dithering. Turns out I needn't have dithered. I was the only new person and everyone works at their own pace. So if I need to take time off for kids school events, it's fine. Xx |

we chatted about this after attempting to win the lottery haha and failing of course - what we do with winnings - after the initial splurge of spending - new car , house maybe and holiday - i would volunteer some of my time where i actually work now - or similar |

No idea and to be honest, dreading having to retire/not work and will definitely be on the look out for vacancies at B&Q etc as the idea of not working bores the pants off me and hate working part time as I do at present |

Yeah the idea of not working bores me too. It's why I like to think of what I would do if my choice were interest based rather than monetary.  |

We don't work. Currently we're doing our house up and in between we read, walk, see friends, go out, visit National Trust, garden, sew, help elderly relatives, pursue hobbies we had no time for when we worked and sometimes do paid work if we need some extra money. When we get time we will do some voluntary work.

As someone lucky enough not to have to work;
I am;
Supervising the renovation of my house here ( well that has effectively finished now)
Doing a course ( two half days a week) to move my colloquial French up to fluent standard. ( essential in my mind since I live here)
Starting to beat the jungle that should be my garden into shape
Preparing stuff for a weekly Anglo French discussion group.
Travelling locally to find out about local history.
Researching the history of my house.
Occasionally taking part in a mentoring programme for employees with my old employers
Socializing : (it's France; you have to spend at least an hour every day in the cafe chatting)
Reading ( particularly scientific journals and new papers )
Volunteering in a local charity.
Trying to avoid being co-opted onto our
Village council by the mayor.

I have children and grandchildren,I have very little real free time. I'm hoping this changes when they learn to drive themselves around and don't need a babysitter. |

Thing is I've been paying off debts hence the pub shifts but if I could I'd learn sign language for the deaf, learn IT and a teaching course so I could set up my own business teaching IT to beginners. See I still couldn't not work but at least I'd be doing something I enjoy |

Once you've paid off your debts (well done, keep going!) definitely sign up for a BSL intro or jump straight into level 1; you'll love it, I did! |

I became a dementia friend..
Although i currently no longer work i am still involved with my ex place of employment and just go in and give ladies and gents company. little chats and endless cups of tea's.
When my child is older i will get into youth clubs where she can attend and i can help out |

I'd like to travel around the UK. Never been anywhere, so that would be a big thing for me. Would love to do a bit of walking around the British countryside. May sound lame to some but that would do me.
I'd love to take my interest in photography further. It would be nice to have more time to develop () my skills in that. |

If you get scholarships or a paid PhD program you might be able to actually do this. Just publish enough articles to guarantee your entrance into the next program

If I had enough money I would probably start my own small business. It depends really if I retire early, I would realistically look for a B&Q type place to work. If I retire a little bit later, I will keep bees...I'm not going to work past 60 though. I want to enjoy my retirement whilst I am fit enough...

There doesn't tend to be any funding available for things like early modern history which is my background....that's why I had to get a proper job in the first place  I know people who do things like engineering who are doing this though because they can get their study sponsored by industry. |

Im in the very fortunate posistion where I no longer need to work for past couple of years and long may that continue.
I never get bored and there is still not enough hours in the day.
I travel when I can, I read, I go the gym, I walk my dogs in the park or beach (beach in summer), christmas before last I helped out with some homless people, this christmas I helped out at the dog shelter.
if im in the house and not doing anything ill get on internet and look up things im curious about like space, planets, wildlife documentarys or even use you tube to learn how to do things.
for example my nephew got a rubix cube as a lil stocking filler for xmas...he spent hours trying to do it but only able to get one side done.
that night I you tubed how to do a rubix cube... within couple hours I mastered how to do it.
the next day when I seen my nrphew I did it for him within a minute or two...he now thinks im a genius ha.
but yeah im very lucky I dont need to work but never ever do I get bored there is just too many things to do and things to learn about.

Catch up on sleep.
Travel
Perfect my cooking and DIY skills
Volunteer at the local Oxfam book shop and immerse myself in books
Ride and go Gym daily.
Would miss work though.

The only people I know with paid PhDs in artsy stuff have to do so much teaching as part of it that they may as well be teachers/lecturers anyway...I couldn't be arsed with that, I'd want it to just be me and my books |

Im lucky that I get to travel the world with my job, and have now managed to check off 23 countries, favourite so far being Greenland, amazing scenery.

Any track, UK, I love Oulton Park, world there's only 1 - spa. I'm just happy smelling of petrol and oil, I never washed my overalls when I used to kart. The smell of castrol g30... Only beaten by Victorias secret bombshell! |

Been retired for just under 4 years now and like some other's i don't know how i found the time to work, very fortunate that if i want to i wont work again but have been busy helping family do up some properties as well as a new kitchen/bathroom here, that sort of stuff..
walking the dogs, now just 1 since last Friday, tending to the poly tunnel and veg beds there's always stuff to keep one occupied..

I really wish I didn't have to work today. I've pretty much been on a four day bender and I think I may have killed my liver and my lungs.
If I didn't have to come here every day then I'd like to do something that didn't involve people. Kennels or stables or something like that. |

I'd disappear into the cozy world of academia because clearly three degrees (no singing) is not enough. I'd finally get round to writing a book and I'd be even geekier than I already am.

If I had time to myself, and money was not an object, I would open a centrenfor children with special needs, offering their parents much needed respite. It would be filled with everything needed and I would also do charity events to ensure the money keeps coming in. X |

If money was no object I'd go on a course to learn how to build straw bale houses, or roundwood timber frame structures. Then I'd buy a plot, preferably with a woodland, and I'd build my own house. After that I'd probably spend my time travelling and gardening. |

For 6 months, I'd rent a nice flat near to a tube station in London, to be able to "do" everything that London has to offer.
Then I'd renovate a nice house in the countryside.
Inbetween, I'd pursue photography, learn piano, cook my own meals as well as enjoy eating out, and after all that, I'd have no time left to be bored!! |

bit of a diferent take on this subject but I have ms and found work getting too much for me,i worked at a busy university,i retired with full pension on ill health grounds,paid off my mortgage and now ive found my ms a lot better.i spend my time doing what interests me I go to see my favourate football team home and away I love the away days it involves a lot of train travel and fair bit of visiting pubs I eat out a lot as I live next to lots of restaurants and bars,im learing scots gaelic,maybe in the future il be more restricted by my ms so im making the most of things now |

I'd redesign my garden & teach myself to be a really good cook for starters.
I've been lucky to have lots of help over the years with my kids so would be lovely to be in the position where i could repay the kindness by helping my friends out. |

Courtney, this is such a brilliant and timely question for me.
I'd secure myself a warm hovel that those who loved me for myself would be eager and happy to snuggle down and jangle in.
We'd drink red wine and discuss subterfuge and shit and giggles. I'd help you with your dog refuge and tell everyone i could do it so much better and call it Bert's Bodega.
I'd throw paint at canvas and consider myself the greatest artist that ever lived.
I'd fuck everyone I wanted to and console those I didn't with the notion that they could do so much better.
I'd feed the poor and listen to their stories.
I'd write the books that everyone wanted to read and read the books that everyone wanted to write.
I'd laugh and dance and tell the judgers that I can't tell them to fuck off cos I want them to join in .......
I'd make a chicken do ten meals and see the beauty in every cloud formation and hilltop.
Finally I'd convince every 6ft 2inch adonis that I was a harmless old woman then i'd fuck him senseless and leave him gasping. |

We don't work now. Our interests are gardening, growing our own veg. Belong to national trust, so go to lots of houses and love the gardens. Do lots of walking to keep fit, in our old age!! Holidays in canary islands and Greek islands. It's great not having to fight over who has what holiday weeks at work. Helping with grandchildren, walking our grandson, a very lively, year old cocker spaniel! No, don't know how we had time to work!  |
