you finally join us petrol drivers at paying under a pound a litre
start from tomorrow... the supermarkets.. morrisons, asda, tesco's and sainsburys are all dropping the price of diesel to 99.7p...

Sadly I don't use supermarket diesel.
Dreadful stuff, makes my car blow black smoke and effects the performance. I don't believe it's as clean burning as the premium diesel. |

My mate works in a oil refinery,
he says no matter what it says on the side of the tanker,
They all get filled in the same place.

They all get filled in the same place.

I've worked on a refinery and they used to queue up all brands of tankers and fill from the same tank! |

I always use V power diesel in mine and that's still 115.9 at its cheapest 
It does make a huge difference to the amount of miles I get per tank though so it's worth it. |

Interesting, because a brand such as
V-power diesel has a percentage of its base stock from other sources (I believe liquefied gas), plus other additives and detergents, above that found in base diesel which meets the EN590 standard.

About time too
I use Morrison's and add a dash of low ash 2-stroke oil every 20 litres
If you are getting black smoke try giving your EGR valve a clean (messy job) and then blank it off

They get most of the base product from the same refineries, but go to their own little depots to have different additives or blends mixed in.
There is a difference. |

i was told that brands just put a few additives in, i sometime use supermarket diesel not really noticed the differance, years ago diesel was always cheaper than petrol, has anyone checked if diesel is cheaper than petrol in other eu states |

€0.96 per litre here; ( that's equivalent to £0.66p at today's exchange rates).
Yes. Everywhere in Europe it's cheaper than petrol; always has been. It's only UK that prices it the other way .
And yes; all fuel is the same stuff: wherever you buy it from. |

Diesel is actually cheaper to make than petrol.
Since most commercial enterprises use diesel, EU countries were assisting trade by not taxing diesel as highly as petrol.
Rip off Britain decided that since diesel vehicles generally did higher mpg than petrol ( not so much nowadays) they would make more tax money off diesel.
About 60% of the price you pay for fuel in UK is tax.
Highest tax rate in Europe.
Diesel will go up higher, because now the environmentalists have persuaded everyone that diesel is " dirty" so it will be taxed even more. |

The base product may be the same but the additives that each different manufacturers mix in make a huge difference to the performance. My previous vehicle used to run roughly and did 20 miles less per tankful on Sainsburys diesel compared to other brands. This one doesn't like Morrisons diesel.
The price difference is purely down to the tax added by the government. Diesel is no different to gas oil or central heating oil. The only difference is the colour of the dye and the duty.

Under a quid a litre? That'll do for me, glad I'm using my little diesel van for the winter now.
Mind you, it's never seen a petrol forecourt in all the time I've owned it!
