Happy new year ladies!

I would really appreciate your experience. I was previously on the pill for many years, but due to Ben having had the snip I came off 5 yrs ago. My period is starting to become very irregular and more frequent, so it's being a pain in the arse!!

I thought it was time to go back onto contraception again.

I don't like the idea of the coil - too many horror stories

I've never had the implant so don't know anything about it!

I thought you guys could give me good feedback before i see my GP!

I have the implant... I find it alright, on my 3rd one, hurts like a bitch when getting taken out but works well as I'm.rubbish at remembering to take pills.

Mrsdpt has the implant.

Don't have to worry about remembering to take anything.

Does make for irregular periods though and can last a couple of weeks. It works well for us though

It's the longest we've used any long term contraception.

The coil is the only thing i consider now. I would say it isn't right for everybody, but everyone likes a good drama and the "horror stories" are there for most things if you go looking. Chat to your gp and make your decision not based on the horror stories but on what's right for you. That's the best advice i can give.

I've only ever taken the pill - and can only take 1 with a low oestrogen dose due to my endometriosis. My GP has given me my last prescription & said my only option now is to have a Mirena coil fitted due to my age - my gynae told me I should have one 8 years ago but it never appealed due to horror stories. I would like a hysterectomy but due to funding here they are only being done as a last resort.

I was given the mini pill as it i wasn't allowed any other due to.my age. I got a few periods at first but then was period free unless i forgot to take it.

I am now on hrt which does give me periods but they are regular generally and light

I have similar issues I've been on a the contraceptive pill since I was 13 in order to try and control my periods. I've been on several types and have now found the best one for me. I have endometriosis and have had laser to remove it but as per above I have been advised to use the Mirena coil but I'm quite sceptical.

If you are using it in terms of controlling periods I believe the pill is the best option as it does help once you've found the right one and as advised, I take mine straight through not to have a period for 3 months.

If you are using it in terms of contraceptive, then I guess the coil would be best as many people I know have still caught whilst on the pill!

Thanks so much guys, I hadn't taken into account the advice would change as I'm older!

I would indeed be using it for control of periods only, as I use condoms with meets.

I'm good at remembering to take daily tablets so if the positives for the implant is only convience maybe going back on the pill would suit me best. And no periods would be useful!

im on the depo injection, to be honest i personally cant fault it, its just an injection in your bum every 11 weeks, stops your periods too, ive been on it since the birth of my daughter who is 14 now and ive not had a single period in that time

I've been on the pill for years and due to really heavy periods in last couple of years and age ,Dr had advised me to have coil fitted. Going to give it ago as at mo can bleed for 2weeks and that's with taking pill with no breaks.

I had the Coil put in in September to control my periods. Has worked in a sense that I'm not as heavy but still can last up to 2 weeks. I'm told it can take upto 6/12 months for it to settle completely. Have had no problems with it since I got it but am hoping they take away the period completely at some stage

Oh no I don't know how you cope .I've got firboids and some are in womb opening and suffer with depression though it's controlled. Been reading up and some Dr's say shouldn't have it fitted due to firboids and can make my depression worse.have seen a gyno and she wasn't helpful. Told me my options were bleed ,have coil and have side effects, lose a lot of weight or have everything removed.

After reading it all going to lose the weight and stick with pill.

Take into consideration what type of pill suited you before. Different types and quantities of hormones affect women differently.

At my age I'm on the mini-pill to regulate them. I have a reminder app so I take it the same time each day. It took a while to settle in (about a month of light bleeding) but now it's working fine.

I decided to get sterilised, key hole surgery & up all fine with in a week - have regular periods - I decided to get sterilised as 1, I don't want any more children & 2, I don't like taking the pill or injection (have done both) for prolong periods - it's unnatural & I prefer to let my body do as it's supposed x

I wish I could let my body do as it's supposed to. But 5 days off work each month is not an option. I take my pill, diclofenac & an anti-depressant for pain relief & still end up doubled over in pain trying not to be sick in my bin.

I bled lightly for an entire year from 2 depo injections. My experience seems fairly unusual though.

The implant gets very mixed reviews. Some women say their periods stopped completely whereas others had non-bio heavy bleeding for months...

Personally, I haven't had a period since my implant was fitted but I'm one of the unlucky ones where something has gone wrong - it's completely disappeared and no fucker can find it!

Got to have an ultrasound to make sure it's still in my arm and if not, I'll have to have an MRI to find out where the fuck it's gone.

Either way, it's looking like I may need surgery to remove it once it's been found as it's definitely not just under the skin.

My situation is incredibly rare though.

You just have to try a few things and work out what's best for you.

My advice would be go to a clinic and speak to a nurse who specialise in contraception.

I have had all types of pills and none where good for me for difference reasons

I had the injection which stopped periods after the first month but I did gain weight

My daughter had the implant and had every side affect mentioned.. In and out of hospital with severe migranes and had it took out after 13 months... And she said it hurt going in but not coming out

My friend has had the implant for years without problem

I had the coil and caused problems but others have had none

The hormones and things effect each person different.. And what could be ideal for one could be the worst for another.

There is a coil with no hormones at all used

Also health providers recommended not using the coil if you have more than one sexual partner.

Xxx

Have to spoke to a medical professional about Endometrial ablation, it has helped a few of my friends x

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Endometrial ablation is a surgical treatment for women who have heavy periods (menorrhagia). Most of your womb (uterus) lining is destroyed during the procedure. There are different techniques to do this, which include using electrical currents, radiofrequency waves or heated water. More on bupa website x

I changed to the mini pill when I turned 40 and Ive not had a period in years it's great!! I take it when I remember and don't seem to have any side effects.

I was told after this by one GP that she would only advise the Minerva coil and refused to renew my pill but my main GP hit the roof as he is the only one trained to fit them and he said the coil isn't advised for women who have never had children. You can't always trust what one GP says.

There's no reason women who haven't had children can't have the coil. The doctor who fitted mine specialises in contraception and women's health. I've had one for a year and it's brilliant, I've had no side effects which I did with different types of the pill and depo injections. The idea of the implant creeps me out.

I've got my second marina coli in and have had no problems and no periods which I love. I would suggest you talk to a Dr at a sexual health clinic as apposed to a GP as they will know a whole lot more as it is their field of expertise. There are 2 coils so maybe the horror stories are for the copper coil of which I have heard many a shocking story

Near enough

I'm on my third implant, no problems at all so far, no bleeding either which was becoming a problem with the coil, depo injection and the pill. In fact I became pregnant with the pill and the injection. After having my daughter I ended up with a 'reverse cycle' which was a nightmare. Implant has taken all that away, and ive found it painless to have put in/removed/changed

I tried the pill and got pregnant.

I had the coil and it caused two to three week periods. I ended up with a horrible infection and had to have a quick operation to take it out.

In the end I thought bugger it and got sterilised. X

My suggestion would be to grab a cuppa & your laptop & sit & read all about your options. I was on the depo injection for 5 years, had my kids & went to go back on it only to be told that new research shows it softens your bones. They now recommend you're not on it for more than 3 years.

So after looking about I decided on the implant, had it put in in August & have had only one period since but it was heavy. Also the implant site itched like mad for a few weeks & it kicked off my migraines but I persevered & now it's fine.

Work out what is best for you & your lifestyle, we're all different & work in different ways xx

Do you keep a diary in which you mark up the days you bleed, how heavily and how you feel etc? I (her) used one to prove to the consultant that I couldn't have a "normal" life and how the fibroids/heavy periods and pain were effecting both myself and others. I had tried everything they suggested at this point. I hope you get sorted soon.

this..nothing they gave me suited me. my daugher tried the jab after being happy on the pill..made her terribly emotional..she felt out of control and they wouldnt attribute it to the jab..she had four i believe, before i persuaded her to come off of it to see if it was that...it was..took her a good four months to get back to her bouncy self...so just be aware..every woman is different and if you havent had it before, dont fob off symptoms no one will tell you its the cause of...the implant is such a long term thing..but trust yourself and be in tune with your body always x

This is why I love forum, it's the sharing of experiences and the swapping of advice. Especially of subjects a lot of women wouldn't talk about so freely.

I'm sorry to hear about the endometriosis and fibroid problems you guys are having to cope with.

And hunting for MIA implants! ! Good luck I hope the ultrasound finds it.
