I mean, what rational reason is there for it...or do people just do it without thinking?!

Sorry if I'm offending but I just don't understand why people bother and what RATIONAL benefit people get from it.

Haha, brave but true.

I lost interest about 10 years ago, but before that i earned my spurs on foreign fields. So guess I found it entertaining.

Now , nah no thanks. on so many levels

I agree. Football to me is pretty dull to watch.

I've recently been getting into UFC though (mixed martial arts). It's still stupid because it's just people skillfully hurting each other for money but it's better than football (in my opinion anyway)

You could say the same about any sport to be honest.

I have no idea why I love football but despise rugby.

I don't come from a football supporting family.

But I do love it and it's as much a part of me as being left handed is, as being 5'6 is, as having a thing for younger men is.

Now the soaps, what the fuck is the purpose of that shite?

As my previous username used to be superramfan, then I think I might be doing not only myself, but other lovers of the beautiful game an injustice if I was not to reply to this thread.

It is a simple game that any schoolboy can play, albeit some better than others.

Accessible to most people in the world, it is a sport that is watched by millions.

It gives an identity to a hell of a lot of people.

Commercially it is generally successful.

It gives Mark somewhere to get away from Ali to scoff his pies, or not

Is there a rational reason why people should like watching football as much as they do and is it rational how much other people winning and losing affects the watchers?

How much of the nations time/money is wasted watching/following football??

What? Are you querying what people spend their money on? What about alcohol, TV subscriptions, drugs, fast food or literally anything else that could be considered a waste of money lol. What answer are you looking for? I do it because it's an easy way to spend time with friends, it's easy to discuss, you can travel to different parts of the country with a bunch of like-minded people and when you win it's an excellent feeling.

I get paid nothing to play football. I actually pay to play. I also clear dogs shit from the pitch before the game.

Overpaid morons are a tiny percentage of the millions who take part in this sport and many people watch the sport at a lower level where the players get paid a lot less.

The thing with football (and other trivial things people have mentioned) is that it creates something for people to discuss.

So people spend time talking about some people kicking a ball and running instead of talking about important things and solving problems.

Politicians and big corporations must love things like football because it distracts people from thinking too much and questioning things too much.

Football, X-factor, consumerism, nationalism, Eastenders etc... all help to make and keep people stupid basically.

The most extreme example I witnessed of this was that crash at an airshow this summer - big fireball on the motorway, 12 people killed?

Anyways, the news footage showed said fireball occurring in various backgrounds while row after row of onlookers recorded it in the foreground.

We all like things for different reasons and no where does it state they have to be rational ones.

Were you on the pitch playing? NO so its they not we!!!! I hate everything about football. But a lot of people dont so they follow it. Seems fair to me.

Very odd thing to say. As someone who has posted on football-based message boards and been "involved" in football since I was about 12, football fans are varied, as are people. You get negative glass half empty fans and positive glass half full fans and pragmatic fans and everything inbetween. Why would it be any different just because they choose to follow a sport?

What the fuck hahaha

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with some of you people? You criticise people for watching a sport and in the same breath generalise very offensively.

First of all, just cos you are a football fan does not mean you spend "most of your free time" watching football. I spend 90 minutes watching football once every week because I don't watch any on TV unless England are playing. Secondly, why do you think someone who watches football is unable to get involved in other topics and interests? This isn't the 80's, football fans are very diverse, in a crowd there'll be doctors, nurses, firefighters, religious people and every other job you can think of. What a stupid closed-minded view you have. I can talk about politics, animal cruelty, why the earth is being destroyed by corporate greed, I can talk about religion, relationships, swinging, anime, every subject you can think of I can probably hold some sort of discussion on - yet you'd dismiss me straight away because I like following my local football team?

I feel very lucky not to be you.

Older Hot Bearded Guy

Player power has ruined football for me, these days. You wouldn't have had someone like Brian Clough or Alex Ferguson putting up with the shenanigans that the modern day footballer gets up to. The first sign of a player pulling rank back in the day and he would have been on his way.

The game has suffered as a result.

Well I can't speak for everyone else but roughly 50% of my friends I have were initially made from our mutual love of football.

Why does everything have to be rational? Is it rational to have bareback sex? Is it rational to sit in the middle of a bunch of blokes who wank on your face? Is it rational to post face pics to public on here when you're a parent or potential parent? Is it rational to get completely smashed when you go out? No, but people do and escape criticism (well maybe not on the bareback thing but loads of people do it on nights out in every country in the world every weekend). Why should the pretty harmless sport of football be controversial in this respect?

Rational? Sadly that's a subjective term and means little. Some people enjoy the passion and intrigue that is associated in football. I don't lambast people for enjoying classical music or for reading a book so why do so because a person enjoys sport? This world in general and fab by reflection would be much nicer if we all lived and let live.

There is an old quote with relevance to football "never in the sphere of human reference does any thing mean so little but matter so much."

I hate football with a passion and coming from a bloke living not far from Newcastle that might sound a bit odd because 'all Geordies love football don't they?' No they don't despite popular belief. When folks ask me what team I support and I reply that I don't know the first damned thing about football, other than the fact that the players a grossly overpaid prima donnas, they look at me as if I'm queer .. so be it then, I must be a bit odd. But I also accept that lot's of people like football and if that's their bag then I'm fine with that. I dare say a lot of people would laugh at me because I collect vintage telephones, miners lamps and enjoy walking around graveyards in the dead of night with almost 5 grands worth of camera kit on my person, taking photos in the moonlight :-0 Variety is the spice of life so they say and it would be a boring life if we all enjoyed the same thing.

The OP was asking for rational reasons.

Just because you're a super fan doesn't mean you have to jump down the throat of everyone who thinks following football is pointless. I'm finding your posts unnecessarily aggressive. "

I know he was. He probably won't find them, hence my post.

I'm not a super fan, I've sacked off most away games this season cos we're shite and I can't be arsed spending money on watching us. Never claimed to be one.

As for finding my posts unnecessarily aggressive... I just don't care, sorry, I can't pretend to care that you find me aggressive because I'm not.

From a season ticket holder and top 350 England fan in the country I can comment on this thread

For me it's not just going 3/4 miles to my club it is the 400 mile round trip i do every other weekend. It's watching my team on tv. It wearing my team colours,!its going abroad with England and meetin friends from all parts of the country having a beer and sing song and banter

I don't think this has answered the OP at all.

"Player power has ruined football for me, these days. You wouldn't have had someone like Brian Clough or Alex Ferguson putting up with the shenanigans that the modern day footballer gets up to. The first sign of a player pulling rank back in the day and he would have been on his way.

The game has suffered as a result. "

Blame Jimmy Hill for that

I, the fem, loves football as does my husband.

We are season ticket holders and go to over 50% of the away games too. Our team is doing brilliantly at the moment but we support it no matter what and i have done all my life.

We love the games, we like the skills the guys have, we love the tribal feeling.

Other people get the same feelings about other sports or even tv shows. We are all different and thats a good thing surely ?

Well surely this applies to all sport, TV shows, hobbies and everything else in life, some people enjoy football and some don't, why does there have to be a rational explanation for it, this is what is annoying about the world today, why can't people just enjoy something without there needing to be some aul moaner questioning it...Christ if there's something in life that gives you enjoyment you should grab it with both hands, not be worried about being asked to give a rational explanation about it...

Probably never will

Surely it's all down to what you like?

£950 for a man Utd season ticket is ridiculous to me....in the same way most people think I'm mad for throwing thousands into a couple of subwoofer.

Be a rather boring world if we all liked the same things.

I feel very lucky not to be you."

What do you mean - footy people are varied now cos it's not the 80s?

You do know footy existed before sky turned it into an expensive soap opera for kids.

And believe it or not, back in the 80s your footy world was actually quite varied.

More skill then as well, now English football is just about speed. The best have always gone to Spain or Italy

They not we, you and I were not on the pitch, they do not represent me I have nothing to do with football I dont give two shits if they fly Englands flag. I feel no sadness if they loose and would feel no honour if they won. There is no "we" unless your on the team.

What a pathetic, pedantic thing to get annoyed at. "

If we all had the same hobbies, passions, interests and views.. Life would be dull..... Live and let live..it's a sport.. And nothing wrong with people supporting their local sportsmen and women....in fact it should be encouraged from a young age in my opinion to take up a sport.. And football is a sport any one can take part in.. Regardless of skill x

Well Said.....!

I used to be a Licensee and ran a pub at one time in my career. One promotional idea I put in, was to have a no Football pub! My area manager said it would never work, but the financial results proved otherwise; I'd more business from people who said it made a change to find a place without Footie blaring out from the TV. I then moved on to another area and the next Licensee, put Football on from Noon to night - his takings crashed within a month!

I've been in pubs where after England lost their game, I saw grown men cry! Oh, FFS, get a life! Plus, when asked what team I support, I still get the eejits who, on hearing I don't follow the game and don't know one fact from another about it, come out with the immortal line, "you must be a poof if you don't like football!"

Decent fans accept that not everyone is utterly enthralled in the game, but there are the minority elements of society who just cannot see how wrapped up in Football they have become, to the point they cannot see sense.

Maybe the commercialism has taken over that the actual game has lost its more distant appeal. I've said it before elsewhere, but maybe if players weren't paid so much, it might be more appealing to far more people. What if the players had to earn their money - EG, instead of having such high ranking salaries and advertising fees to cushion their lives, give them a basic salary and the rest goes into a holding account till the end of the season. That means they have to earn it, no bookings, good conduct, and score goals. Succeed and you earn it; fail and it all goes to Charity. That would sort out the workers, the true players who'd play to earn their money.

Yeh unfortunately there was a rough edge to a lot of big games.

I've seen some crazy things, not least the first time I went to OT (not that they're my team)- and the turnstiles were the the strangest turnstiles I've ever seen. Metal bars sticking out toward you, at various heights. Quite threatening in a quiet way, though probably deigned to stop guys storming through!

Also seen opposition fans throw bricks at buses just after a game. Not in Manchester, somewhere else.

But few things in life as enjoyable as playing footy, watching it has changed though.

Good luck for your team though, got to admire those who support their team when the whole media thing is focused on top euro teams and not much about anyone else. Hopefully you can watch them for a decent price as well !

thing is.,... other than in the summer... there actually isn't a great deal of football on free to air TV.... so you can actively avoid it if it pains you...

in fact... it could be said there is actually more Rugby on Free to air... and F1.... and athletics....

god help you miserable sods when the olympics comes roud.....

but yet... the amount of angst that comes sports way in general is way over the top...

I'll sit down and watch and appriate sport for what it is....

every olympics... i take 1 sport that I would never have watched and watch it... and then you get a much better sense for what it all involves...

in beijing.... it was water polo

in london... it was handball

I have no idea. Maybe they have no lives of their own so follow someone else's so they don't realise how pointless their own is? Isn't that why football was always popular to the working classes in industrial centers? So they didn't have to think about the fact that all they were going to with their lives was work then die?

I never did, so thought I'd best go to a big match to see what folk saw in the big live games, and it was just the same as the telly, it was quite a good match by all accounts yet for me it was just boring as hell....grown-up men running after a ball with a look on their faces that suggested it was actualy a really serious thing they were doing!
