Ok - so, after several offers, we accept an invitation to a small, intimate party (3 couples) - we arrive fresh and in the festive spirit - a few naughty card games and everyone is getting on great. Then, because his partner has had too much to drink, the host just "calls it off". In other words - all out please - at which point my hubby (who is driving) has to down 3 pints of water to try and sober up (totally impossible to get a taxi) before driving home. Not impressed and something we would never do i.e please feel free to sleep it off or whatever - are we wrong here ? |

It's a private party; the hosts can call it off at any point:
It's not like a commercial club which effectively enters into a " contract" by charging for admission.
You obviously know nothing about alcohol, it's effects and driving:
If one of you was driving; " downing 3 pints of water in an effort to " sober up" is of no use: once you have ingested alcohol; it is burned out of the body at a constant rate whatever you eat or drink.
so one of you should be able to drive ( by not drinking)
So chalk the whole thing up to experience.
From my experience, if the " hostess " got too pissed ; I expect actually she is not into swinging, does it because she is forced to; gets pissed to cope with it.
I have encountered this scenario before; it is nearly ( perhaps is) organized rape. |

Was she pissed when you turned up ? Or well on the way ?
If so, I'd have held back on the drinking myself - just in case
But yes, not a nice position to be put in
