Just curious to what you think, especially given the somewhat flimsy and ironic threads recently.

I guess it depends on your outlook on life to determine what ' conditions ' are gifts.

I'm dyslexic my spelling is appalling but I'm really good at annograms.. That could be seen as a gift

Okay here goes.....

I looked up 'gift'

Under definition 1. Something given freely to someone with payment. EVERY CONDITION

Under definition 2. A natural ability or talent....... Now that requires thought.

Reply privately, Reply in forum +quote or View forums list

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

Depends on how the person views 'it'.

You've got a BMW and want a Mercedes but someone gives you another BMW then you probably won't see it a a gift, but someone wanting a BMW will be seeing you as ungrateful for not wanting that one.

Same for any gift. If you don't want it then it's not a gift for you, but others might be happy with it.

Cba to go deep tonight, it's New Years, whoohooo.

A physiotherapist once said to me that people like my sister give us so much. I stared at her, wanting to put my hands around her scrawny neck and squeeze, until her brain was starved of oxygen and see how she liked being unable to walk, talk,go to the toilet, bathe herself, feed herself and have barely controlled epilepsy. All so she can give so much for humanity of course.

A Monsignor said something similar to my mother after she was left brain damaged and severely disabled. Some people have no idea.

I know you're being sarcastic but when someone i know had a breakdown i did learn a lot from it.

I was worried sick while ignorant, so i learned about mental illnesses so i could understand her more, plus she tells me stuff too. And that progressed into learning more about the brain, psychology, history of medicine, war crimes and atrocities, neurology, molecular biology and i know what job i want to do now, whereas before i never was really focused on anything.

I also learned about evolution and a whole host of irrelevant stuff along the way because the people teaching me also taught that and gave me their insight. Was a good few years a spent just learning, need to get back into it again really.

I've also had a few debates with my mum about her choice of carpet colours, painted a small table for her hallway grey to match the carpets...apparently the carpet is blue

i'm going to stick my neck out and say Asperger's, marfan's (although that's only cause i hate being short and i don't mean it really), arguably bipolar, hyperflexibility. Some conditions persist in the gene pool as evolution has selected for them, even though they appear negative, as some feature of the condition was positve at some point. Eg sickle cell or CF. One could posit that more truly genetic conditions could be like this, we just don't know what the positve is yet.

Being short isn't a characteristic of Marfans. Being tall with long arms and legs is. My sister has it

I'm not condemning any of the aforementioned, just that notion of thinking that passing them on to a child is a 'gift' of sorts.

I just read [part of] the thread and now understand the OP.

Interesting read. I don't have any "conditions" and I wouldn't take any if they were handing them out. That says it all for me, really. I have no problem taking all the other gifts I'm given.
