I am not a big fan of superheroes with the exception of the classic big names, and even then it is the storyline rather than the superhero.
In order to tap into the Fab Forum comic geek knowledge pool and to share other great stories and publishing houses, here are a number of questions relating to stories other than from Marvel or DC (I am allowing Vertigo titles for obvious reasons). Given there are 100's of great titles I am keeping short.
Question oneish: What 4 ongoing titles are you collecting (and you can insert why)?
Question two (with bits): What 4 past titles are you favourites and you would recommend (and why)?
My Ongoing Titles
Empowered: Manga orientated superheroine, sexy, funny, dark and at times deep.
Fables: before all the tv shows using fairy story characters there was Fables, enough said!
Criminal/Fatale: Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips few people (Garth Ennis excepted) do,dark twisted people and good intentions going fatally wrong, like these guys.
Elephantmen: Great graphics, stories about the dark side of man and animal.
Past Titles
100 Bullets: slow to start and then epic detective and political, historical paranoia, I mean a character called Cole Burns, got to love it.
Sin Cityany title): The graphics and pulp noir feel.
Hellblazer: John Constantine, not the awful film version or sanitised new version, but the cynical magus and trickster and one man walking disaster. The last friend to help when in trouble.
Ruse (by Cross Gen: Great gothic steam punk drawn world, involving a world class detective and an interesting female colleague. |

Ongoing:
Saga is the only one I'm collecting right now. Really amazing art and story. The writing is clever too, which is a must for me.
Past titles:
Sandman. My first ever series. Just... fucking..... Gaiman at his finest.
Preacher. Foulmouthed Irish American preacher imbued with the word of god. Hilarity and rudeness ensues. The writer and artist are not shy of pushing boundaries. Lol.
Y: The Last Man. All mammals with a y chromosome suddenly die, bar one man and his monkey. Again, the writing is superb, and isn't silly with the theme like you think it would be.
.
But yeah, also seconding Fables and Sin City! |

Same!
I read all of Y from a friend, and am just now collecting the collections myself. |

I am a Marvel and DC comics fan, but outside of that one of my most prized possessions is an original 1st edition copy of Terminator #1 comic from the early 1990's.
I also have an edition of Aliens vs Predator comic from the early 1990's. |

Hmmm, ongoing is tough as have so many but most are Marvel or DC... Will add more manga in instead then...
1. Attack on Titan - Crazy manga series, good anime too
2. Sword art online -Cool anime, manga not quite so good (classing this as reading)
3. Knights of Sidonia - Interesting space / mech manga series
4. The walking dead - need I say more?
Past:
1. Scott Pilgrim (mr pilgrims origin) - Great graphic novel series
2. Deadpool vs the Marvel universe - Marvel I know but a great 4 part series
3. Deathnote - Brilliant manga with very in depth story ideas that have you questioning morality?
4. Ash vs the Evil dead - several versions of this, a good one was the one with the female ash as well as the male ash - can't remember the series name and google feels like hardwork lol
Most of the ongoing manga lists have the anime on netflix at the moment too... |
