Ive decided to quit smoking after having a nasty chest infection,im now on a second dose of antibiotics and still feel like crap,so now want to kick the evil after 22 years of smoking and got an appointment for next Monday at a smoking clinic.
I dont think i could do i with just will power so was hoping to hear from people who have packed in the fags and what is the best aid to quit with i.e patches or gum?

I gave up six months ago now after 38 yrs on the . used champix course from the quacks - amazed as I didn't actually believe I was capable of quiting. I also think it would help if you have someone giving up at the same time to help each other. good luck with it. |

Im hoping to quit next week after nine years. Have set date with help from local health centre.
Heres some tips. If youre ever offered a cigarette, dont decline saying, "No thanks, im trying to quit." Instead reply with, "No thanks, I dont smoke!" That way it wont be pushed in front of your face. Plus put on your profile clearly that you will not meet smokers. And keep it on at least until you are fully strong enough to say that you are definitely not a smoker. This is what i will be doing.

My son and I are giving up... (he's cheating though) I've gone cold turkey, he's reading an Allen Carr book and doing as he recommends, he says that while he's reading the book he has to smoke too?! So far I've managed to stay off the evil , but I'm dreading socialising as that is when I'm at my worst. |

I gave up after 21 years, started when i was 11, that was around 4-5 years ago. It wasn't the first time I had tried, but I no longer consider myself as a smoker.
It isn't easy and I Did have lapses, but it Is worth it, so good luck xx |

I gave up smoking two years ago. I had a 20 a day habit and absolutely loved to smoke. First thing in the morning, cup of coffee and a fag...bliss. But then I kept getting chest infections, pains in my legs, I like on a hill, just walking up it I'd need water and oxygen by the time I got to the top, I;d take a longer route home so I walked down the hill instead of up...I'd get breathless after a good session - that's when I decided enough is enough.
Just stopped like that, no aids, nothing. If I'm out and friends pop out for a fag and they come back and I can smell it, I get craving now and then, but not touched one since.
Now...if only I could resist Greggs...

Luckily Paul and kids dont smoke so wont be tempted by other smokers,have heard good things about champix x |

the best thing i found is have some treat planed for yourself, give yourself little goals and have a treat as you get to one week, two weeks and so on it help keep up the motavation.

I used the Alan Carr book before Christmas and it was fantastically easy. I've used gum, patches and inhalators in the past - all the biggest waste of money. You're swapping one addiction for another.
My mistake when I was using the book was thinking because it had been so easy, I could have one or two then not do it again. Wrong! I was 9 weeks, cold turkey smoke free then I had one. 2 months later i'm about to read the book again, but I know this time it has to be forever - there's no such thing as social smoking.
OP, try the book - you can buy it on Amazon for about £3. What have you got to loose?

I dread putting on weight,as the pounds have crept on over the last couple of years so really dont want to put on any more,but it will be a small price to pay if i can keep of the fags x |

I packed in 5/6 yrs ago and I did put weight on about a stone but I'd rather be heavier then a smoker now like you I had chest infections now I don't get them and my asthma as cleared too.
Do I miss a fag? Sometimes when I'm around smokers but my health is more important so good luck xxx |

No extra weight no. I was managing to do that before I used the book lol. Allen specifically says not to replace the smoking with eating so I was careful not to do that.
You'll get to the last chapter and think 'I don't feel any different, what a load of twaddle' but then something will just click. I managed it even though my boss was my smoking partner and I sat 9-5.30 every day, watching him go out for a ciggie.

Good luck to you.
I did it for the millennium,and have stuck to it-no lapses.I went cold turkey tho,and put on some pounds.
Everyone is different so as much as there is great advice out there,not everything will work for you.
If you do lapse don't beat yourself up over it,just remember there's a reason you wanted to quit on the first place and think about that when you get tempted.
I still get a whiff of a cig every now and then and think mmmmmmmm |

I started smoking in 1974 when I was 11. I smoked A LOT. For the last 15/20 years I was smoking 50/60 Marlboro a day. I've lost count of the amount of times I had tried to give up.
One day last May I was talking to my best friend of 35 years about his forthcoming 50th birthday. I never went. He died a week before his birthday from a massive heart attack. I was shocked and hurt and it still hurts like fuck now.
The one positive? I had a hard look at myself and my lifestyle and with the help of champix haven't had a cigarette for 32 weeks. and I never will again |

we gave up last april after loosing a close family member to cancer really brought it home to us the danger of smoking .. both of us had smoked like you for many years . J had given up a few times in the past and always relied on going cold turkey no patches nothing!!
i had never given up at all and had been smoking since i was 15.
we watched a home video of us on the beach both wheezing and really chesty and decided to set a day to give up. i was fine for first few days i had no craving for a cigarette but i was just plainly ill .. J kept on going cold turkey ..
i went to the chemist in the end and started a course of nicotine sweets and gum which although not very pleasant stopped me from feeling so ill ..
J managed to go without ..
it is true the first week is the hardest, keep yourself busy .. if you feel ill see your doc they really can help loads /
we are now nearly 8 months smoke free i weaned off the tablets after about 12 weeks in ..
we are both happy and very very healthy and sooooo chuffed with ourselves!!
so keep going use the chemist and your doc and enjoy the weekly benifits you will come across which make it all so worth while.

I stopped many moons ago..cold turkey, with no relapses, perhaps 19 - 20 years or so ago...it was not easy, took about 6 weeks, if I remember correctly for the cravings to stop, however soon after that, I very quickly became very sensitive to the smell of smoke, made me feel sick!....all these years on, it still has the same effect, I loathe the smell and the habit...I think this is what helped me. Good luck, I hope it all goes well for everyone trying to stop...the smoking ban in public places has helped to encourage people to stop too. |

All i can say after giving up is dont stop giving up..If you relaps so what it was 1 fag doesnt mean your back smoking you just had a weak moment!

I gave up in about 1980 and it was hard, but I was determined and did it cold turkey! Never seen the point of patches and pills because as someone else put it, you are swapping one addiction for another.
In fact it is the same addiction but taken a different way and that is what manufacturers rely on. They make a fortune selling all these potions and remember, it is the nicotine that is addictive!
All that said, if it works for you so much the better. I would much rather that friends of mine were taking nicotine pills or patches than smoking that noxious . I don't preach, but I do let them know I want them to give up and that I would support them. After that it is up to them.
I can't remember who said it, but it was mentioned about the first cigarette of the day? Well, apart from those who get up in the night to go to the loo and decide to have a smoke, first fag of the day is a reall danger point for heart attacks and strokes.
First puff sends the blood pressure up, but at the same time it constricts the arteries by a sizeable amount, hence the light headedness that some feel.
Be careful, think about what you stand to lose and also those who love you. It's not easy, but I am sure lots of Fabsters would support anyone trying to kick the habit! (Just look at this thread!) xx |

I started smoking at school because it was "big and clever" to do - everyone else gave it up but you guessed it I carried on and to be honest I LOVED smoking!!! Then one day (after the smoking ban came in) I thought do you know what - this is stupid - as I stood there in the rain fag in hand - I went to the Doctors who referred me to the NHS stop smoking clinic - they gave me Champix - which take away the panicked feeling I had when I wanted a cigarette - til eventually I found I just didnt want one anymore. That was 4 years ago. I can be around smokers but know I cant smoke again - as due to my addictve personality lol - I will never see myself as a non smoker - more a smoker who doesnt currently smoke! |
