Really - Cancun stinks, imo. If you like package hols and d*unken Yanks, fine. But it's a big ol' country with a huge variety of scenery, culture and environments.
Mexico city is ugly but a blast... I remember flying in and it seemed to stretch on forever, like some vast car boot sale.
Arrived on Independence Day.
Go see some ruined cities in the jungles of the Yucatan, go to Oaxaca... spend time in the central highlands... but DON'T go to the north.

Cancun - it's full of Americans.
They go on holiday to another country and stay in resort hotels where they speak American, shop in American shops, eat American food... the only difference is the colour of the people serving them and the free availability of cocaine.
It's dull and completely misses what Mexico is really like.

They go on holiday to another country and stay in resort hotels where they speak American, shop in American shops, eat American food... the only difference is the colour of the people serving them and the free availability of cocaine.
It's dull and completely misses what Mexico is really like.
