Today someone told me that they used to work in catering for large functions. They told me that when serving coffee, they had to ask "with or without milk" because to ask if they wanted "black or white coffee" was considered to be racist.

So is it racist to ask "would you like black or white coffee?"?

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

A racist comment is a comment about someone's nationality or race, not what colour a beverage is served.

It doesn't sound credible that race was used as the reason for this claim.

Different people have different needs and some races are more susceptible you some conditions than others. For example, darker skinned people are more susceptible to vitamin D deficiency than lighter skinned people. There are many other, far more serious illnesses, that affect some races more than others.

The reality is is that we are not all the same and that there are differences between races that do go deeper than just the colour of the skin. To ignore that fact in the treatment of people just in case it was considered racist would be to do a disservice to those affected.

Being equal does not mean being the same.

Well I read an inter_iew in the guardian (not exactly a right wing haven) with a head teacher who banned sports day being competitive. Her logic was basically "I'm not athletic, I hated sports day, therefore I want to project my insecurities on everyone else". Well I'm shit at maths and I didn't like it much at school, doesn't mean we should ban it for everyone else...

Maybe I dont need to be there for my partner, as he can fend for himself, but I will certainly call people for their attitude or comments about my children and other children. No, I was born in the Black Country, but according to some over sensitive prick from Wolverhampton the Black Country flag is racist, because it features a chain,

The Black Country made chains

We exported those chains

People used those chains to chain black people

Those chains probably were used by the suffragettes to chain themselves to railings thus gaining votes for women, but some people just can't be positive can they

Isn't going out of the way to avoid the word black more racicst than just accepting that things have colours, that's black, that's red, that's white that's blue...

Who gives a fuck, it's a word that describes a colour...it has no power. Only the mind that uses the word gives it power, and a mind scared to use the word black, is more racist than the mind that sees no issue with the word.

Get a grip weird coffee company!

Technically black is not an actual colour. Black is the absence of all colour.

As a black person I've NEVER come across a black person who is remotely bothered by such bollocks: it's white people nonsense.

I had a boss I got on well with. The first time he offered to make me coffee he asked me how I took it. I said black, like my men, and that became our standing joke.

Someone overheard us and took me aside and wanted me to take out a grievance for his racist remarks.

That's the whole point though isn't it, these organisations, committees or whatever who appoint themselves as spokespersons for an ethnic group to which they don't belong, deciding what might be offensive to others. And they get paid to do this, generally by taxpayers money. Now that's what I find offensive.

Here endeth my little rant.

I'm appointing myself spokes person for women, I know what's sexist and what's not, men eh who'd have em, don't talk to me about periods.

Yeah that's how fucking ridiculous do Gooders sound, when they presume to know what is offensive, I've suffered racism, real racism, lost tooth, 4 hrs in a&e footprint on my head racism, and not once during the extensive beating did he ask me if I wanted black or white coffee, use a black board, sing baa baa fucking black sheep, or avoid telling me he was going to beat me till I black out.

Racism exists, that's a sad fact of life, but some people are trying too hard to not be racist, so hard they are becoming a bit racist if that makes sense "

This is more that a 7 year old debate, originating in the US college (university) campuses. It was around the time when there was a movement to take back the word "black" in language. Similar divisions can be seen in sex when there was a drive for androgynous terms like 'police person' or 'fire person' and the like, instead of police woman or police man.

"Today someone told me that they used to work in catering for large functions. They told me that when serving coffee, they had to ask "with or without milk" because to ask if they wanted "black or white coffee" was considered to be racist.

So is it racist to ask "would you like black or white coffee?"?

I have come to the conclusion that many of these PC types who come up with stuff like this do so because they are closet racists. And just like all those who are not comfortable in their skin, they are always looking for ways to point fingers at others and label others as being what they are.

.

.

.

.

If someone asked me how I wanted a coffee and told me saying I could not say black or white, I had to with or without milk, I would demand cream!

"

It actually doesn't bovver me whether I'm asked 'with or without milk' or 'black or white' but if I asked either way and was told I had to say the other I would simply consider that as extremely rude and go and buy my coffee else where. I'm there for coffee, not lessons or lectures in either racist terminology or reactionary Miniver Cheevyism. I just want coffee the way I like. White 1 sugar. Any one offering?

SOYA MILK!! WTF..

The number of drugs cleared for animals producing milk for human consumption is tiny, as it goes - and even the the milk withdraw is usually pretty hefty.

There are quite a few issues that you could have chosen with dairying in general (the one that I was always uncomforable with was the shooting of bull calves - which hardly happens now, by the way), but that seems to be an odd one.

Unless, of course you have been watching/reading things pertaining to US dairying - the rules in the EU are vastly different.

And yet, you quote PETA, a US organisation, with an article relating to dairying IN THE USA (as stated, actually in the second paragraph). As I have said, our welfare regs are some of the highest in the world, and a lot of that article simply isn't relevant to dairying in the EU.

The simple fact is that if the PC brigade did not come up with such an asinine idea of what is and isn't racist then there would be no story. That you blame those of us who complain about such PC conditioning shows how well it is working on you.

I did not mention any particular faith, I made a general statement, in the same way as I could have said that the race to maximum 'political correctness' is lead by the most radical elements of the pseudo liberal ultra left wing of the political spectrum and supported by the equally unpalatable ultra right wing. While the rush to curb sexual freedoms is lead by Ultra conservative right wing religious groups. But I chose to be so verbose. For this I apologise.

I take it that you never watch or listen to the Sunday morning morality debates on TV and radio. Because it seems to me to be a recurring subject. I have also noticed that whenever there is a proposal to open a sex shop or club or relax any sexual restrictions (prostitution, brothels and the like) then there is always a well organised and funded highly voluble campaign to oppose liberalisation that is always led by religious community leaders.

But as you say you cant remember the last time you saw anything...

Just proves the old adage 'a week is a long time in politics'.

This is an ancient debate which I remember raising its head over fifteen years ago. At the time l decided to use the phrase "with milk or without". Why, because coffee is not black and 'with or without milk' is accurate. Wow is that painful?

I am staunch believer in PC because at the end of the day its values are firstly being polite, secondly it is about being inclusive. All those against PC go watch 70s sitcoms and representation of minorities and women in pre 1990s films.

In an age where we are trying to present positive role models for young girls, shape the behavior of young men, include gay and trans as equals in in the community. Then we need to take care of how we use language.

As a man l need to take care how l address a woman and seek consent for bedroom talk. In discussing other ethnic groups or cultures, why would l seek to deliberately give insult?

Politeness, inclusiveness, tolerance and treating people equally without being taken for a mug l believe are British values. Unfortunately in my _iew in the PC debate too many listen to the hype!

Such is the extremist level of PC at times that the word black is considered racist irrespective of the context

For me personally I consider something racist to be in some way derogatory opposed to being a point of distinguishing between two or more people/items example of which being if Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua were stood next to each other and I got asked which is which is say Fury is the white guy and Joshua is the black guy in the same way I'd distinguish a couple of people with different hair colours

I thought it was the pot that called the kettle black! So it's really all the fault of the kettle for not taking the pot to a racial discrimination tribunal when it had the outright audacity to call the kettle black in the first place.

You should. Just take a look at the American Families Association website and read their objectives (remember there are similar here but less open and above board).

I agree with what you say about being both polite and inclusive however I don't think that that has anything to do with being PC. To me it is neither polite or inclusive to hall someone up for the way they ask for their coffee to either have milk or not. That's just incredibly rude.

All that being said I have to say that I wonder whether this story actually has any real truth in it and, if it does, whether the truth of the matter has more to do with finding out if people actually want milk, some other whitener, or non at all. I suspect that this is really a red herring thrown up by the anti-PC brigade but more fool the PC guys for jumping to its defence.

It's really all just a storm in a tea cup (or coffee mug if you prefer).

Maybe because the council prudes can justify their stance because they are backed by the local clergy, feminist groups and the like who although they represent probably less than 10% of the electorate can wield power because they are organised. just a thought...

For all those who provided spurious examples: firstly has anyone been factually proved to have complained about the use? Secondly if in a specific context it was found to be racist would you use it? Thirdly given the richness of the English language would it hurt to change? I remember people arguing about the use of actor to women, or chair of a committee and other gender free language which now is not an issue.

In all things context is important.
