I was just on the bus home and a cute American guy asks if he can sit down next to me. I'm thinking score! We start chatting about random things like the Nandos takeaway I had and the weather today. Then he starts to bring the conversation towards an obvious goal and get a little black book out of his pocket ... turns on he's a Mormon and wanted to talk to me about it lol.

I didn't really give him a chance bless him. I'm agnostic and religions have never made sense to me. So I talked to him about how I'm bi and have many wonderful bi/gay friends. I think he got a little overwhelmed as I can talk for England. Sadly I didnt get a chance to tell him about Fab before my stop Maybe could have converted him

Anyway, I'm just interested in knowing if any Fabbers are religious. It does seem like the sort of thing that would be frowned upon! But then I guess that's what confession is for

Agnostic. I enjoy the spirituality that religions bring but do not commit to any. Hey, I see spirits occasionally (not that I especially welcome them. It is not as if I put the kettle on). And you can't beat a good carol service at Christmas.

I don't call it a religion but I follow a spiritual path, yes. I wouldn't dream of trying to persuade anybody else to follow it and I only talk about it if asked directly.

Not religious now, never was that enthusiastic about in the first place. There are some religious people on here though, i know they've mentioned it before (can't remember names).

I have always said that I wasn't blessed with the gift of faith, to anyone who has asked me if I believe in God, and then ask them not to press me on the subject, most don't, but you will always get that one arrogant knob who thinks I can be converted, those conversations never end well for them, as they walk away questioning their own faith

it often puzzles me that some will use their religion as the only reason they have a 'moral code' and that others not religious are lacking something in their life..

Well no one follows ALL the rules, it's impossible, especially in the modern world. For example have you ever seen the Archbishop of Canterbury stone to death an adulterer, or kill someone for picking up sticks on the sabbath or for disrespecting their parents?

So instead of trying to follow every single rules, I try to live in the spirit of Jesus. By this I mean be kind to people I meet, to work for the benefit of others, put the needs of others before the needs of my own, and to try to make the world a better place when I leave it, than when I found it. Obviously some people do this without religion, but I find that it helps to steer me in the right direction. Also I like to believe that there is an after life, which is different to non spirtual people.

I was baptised and raised catholic but questioned it all throughout childhood especially when I had to learn the catcism, I quit doing my first holy communion at the first confession point and have been of no religion since then however recently I've been reading a lot of translations from the Sumerian tablets and I'm certain all religions are based on what they wrote about the ananu gods who came to earth and created us and I find that fascinating texts from 4000 years ago and longer detailing ivf treatment and celestial chariots and allsorts of other stuff, wouldn't say that's my religion now but it certainly makes the most sense, tells the classic bible tales we all know too like Adam and eve and Noah's ark and so on.

Anyway I'll stop rambling now haha.

When I have a question like this I always turn to internet forums for their infinite wisdom, some people here are so clever they can boil a complex issue like religion into a one line judgement. I'd much rather listen to them than ask someone who has actually studied these issues like a priest, rabbi or imam.

Here is how I think it all started there was some bloke[ Lets call him Bill just for this story] maybe slightly intoxicated or just not quite right in the head, He thought that some one spoke to him in a vision maybe they did maybe they didn't ? so he goes and tells his mate {Terry} that someone called god spoke to him and told me we must do good and give offerings to him like food and other valuables and he will make sure we all have good harvests and happy lives . So they left a few offerings for him and they happened to have a great year . So they spread the word and everyone wanted a piece of this good fortune but they had to go through Bill to give their offerings. So Bill thought this is great look at all the gear I've got, cushty little number this I'll spin them all a bit more bullshit get some more stuff . So Terry notices all this stuff that Bills getting and wants in on it so Bill think yer can't do no harm to much for me to handle and a few more mates get in on the act . Well all's going lovely until Terry thinks I want a bigger slice of the cake ,so he invents a story that he has had a vision but his was from someone called Allah and the split was done religion was started and with this the struggle for power over the people ?

Purely fiction I know but it could be true .

Ironically most of the ones that happened over 100 years ago were happening before the seperation of church and state, so I'm always interested how such scholars manage to divide the two so easily and apportion the blame on one side at a time when being an atheist bishop wasn't a contradiction in terms.

The only thing worse than someone trying to convert you to their religion, is someone trying to tell you how not having religion is better.

The fact is, religion has given the world more than it has taken away. Nearly every great scientific and artistic leap forward taken by man was done so by religious people searching for god.

In fact the most amazing minds the world has ever known have all been religious.

I know I am more blown away by the compossers of old to the justin biebers, to the painters of old to banksy. To the scientists of old to the engineers of the iphone.

Without religion the things people do and make loses it soul.

As for the old argument that religion starts wars, well thats not really true. Money, greed, land, power start wars.

When all of Europe was catholic france and england went to war, if you think Ireland and England had a problem over religion its short sighted, if you think the catholics marched on the muslim world for religion, then you need to realise they marched for money and power. Even ISIS largely operate just for money, they make over 800 million dollars a year, the local war lords are paid well.

I cant think of a single conflict in the history of man that was purely religious. When it comes to war we draw a line in the sand "Them" vs "Us" and often one of the main differences, but not always, is religion. We can then use this to identify the enemy. But its a load of nonsense, we just want their land, their money, their resources.

I'm atheist, but I recognise that religion is an amazing thing.

"Religions are the root cause of everything that's wrong in this world of ours. How did you come to that conclusion? Truely religious people make the world a better place .

Religion is a major cause of conflicts all around the world

So when the Soviet Union takes over territory, it becuase of their religious beliefs?

One learns something new here everyday

The Soviet Union?

Was 1989 just a figment of the worlds' imagination?

To answer the OP though: Atheist, although people have assumed that I am a pagan because of my tattoos. "

Well did the soviet union invade Afghanistan for religious reasons or not?

I'm catholic and take faith and look to faith when I am in need especially. I look to god for peace, reassurance and healing. I really don't understand you comment!????

I don't believe that everything in the bible actually happened. But I believe the teachings are there to teach moral. For respect, well being, love and communion.

Everyone to their own. I dont preach. But I don't think your comment is valid as it is seriously flawed and unresearched

Course not - but that wasn't my point.

Well the old testament says that, it says a lot of stuff. Jesus actually had very little to say about sex... it sort of seems like he had more important objectives? Anyway, Jesus = new covenant, old testament = old covenant, therefore Christians shouldn't get too concerned about the old testament, biggest theological mistake the Church ever made was putting that bloody thing as a preface! Most catholic priests openly dislike the bible and would tell you to ignore most of what isn't in the gospels. Believe me, there's not much about sex in the gospels...

As far as I am concerned, the implications of religion have more to do with the acts of the organisation than its followers.

Ergo, not a fan. You can argue bible semantics all day to condone or disapprove of almost any behaviour, so you might as well judge the various churches by their actions.

I have no interesting in trying to change what you believe, you seem reasonable and you're not sprouting rubbish (still waiting to hear about how WW2 was started by religion though). I was very complimentary about an atheist above who stated his position well.

I think contradiction is part of the human condition. Religion isn't my specialist subject, I know some 101 facts but history and economics are my mastermind subjects. Quite a few people who consider themselves to have the "rational" view on religion have some very irrational political views on here. That's a contradiction in my opinion.

It's a very western thing to be preoccupied with rules, other parts of the world - not so much.

I think I have a rational view on it, my view being I don't know alot...

It's just the way I see things as I read them.

I always believed that rules were quite strong on religion, and not subject to changes by it's followers, that would be like playing golf and changing a rule half way through the game because it suited you more now? (bad analogy I know)

I was brought up Greek orthodox, a religion from the rest of the world, and they're pretty damned strict on stuff.

To be honest I can't imagine an organisation that survives without adapting, furthermore, not all rules are equally important. You can try this yourself; go to a Catholic confession and tell the priest you murdered a man and see what response you get. Got back the next day, change your accent and tell him you are a swinger and a I bet he says "thank fuck for that, we had a murderer in here yesterday"

The problem is that nobody really identifies as being a cunt do they. Hitlers CV probably said "calculated risk taker, fairly reasonable guy with strong personal beliefs". As they say, any man that doesn't list 'masturbation' under 'hobbies' is a liar. It's like when fab profiles say "no timewasters please" - do they expect someone to go "oh yeah I'm a timewaster, best not message them"?

sorry, I wasn't asking for answers, the questions were more rhetorical than me expecting you to know...I'm treating you as a sounding board almost.

That's another thing I suppose...

We only know the bits we know and what's made it this far if that's made sense...somebody has decided what we should hear and what we shouldn't and put it in a book which makes it man made to my eyes and little to do with a god.

It feels more like a system of control, man made books and rules for other men to follow.

and I guess nobody can tell me which is right, it's just what one person chooses to believe over another.

That plus all the bits about following god and if you don't do the right thing you go to hell or whatever...BUT he loves you...that just sounds like an abusive relationship!

But again, one I don't understand so my argument there is founded on very little I admit.

I don't think I'll ever truly understand it...

Bloody interesting topic of discussion though

May buy a bible and have a read

I'm not religious, I was Christened and went to a C of E school both not by choice.

If we have a kid, they won't be Christened and won't be brought up religious. They will however be taught right from wrong and morals, like has been said you don't need a religion to do that.

If they grew up and wanted to take religion then that would be fine by me.

I do wonder how many people would take up religion if they wasn't born into it.

Religion? A firm of social control & brainwashing.

The amount of people that actually *believe* the various religious texts staggers me. It's when people quote, for example the Bible, as like some sort of proof for something that I get astounded.

Still brainwashing is everywhere isn't it? Some people also believe what their governments tell them for example ...

I was raised a Seventh Day Adventist, biggest hypocrites going. I believe in a "higher power" but it doesn't stop me being hedonistic.

It's hard to shake a religious background. Ironically, my upbringing has given me the strength to deal with the tragedies of my life, without setting foot in a church or praying.

I think the problem with religion is that it's been left to interpretation by man, and we as the human race are flawed, we only see what we want to see, and understand what we are capable of understanding, there is something in the bible that says that Jesus said that it is easier to pass a camel through the eye of a needle, than it is for a rich man to pass into the kingdom of heaven, in that case the Vatican better have a look round at all the riches it owns and start off loading some, maybe sell it off to help feed clothe and educate the poor of this world, and let's face it, the money that is tied up in the Vatican City could quite easily achieve this many times over.

Religion, a good idea that was turned into something ugly by men who think they know more than anyone else, only love is universal, love is the key to nirvana, heaven, or paradise what ever you want to call it, because it's love that has allowed gay marriage, so it looks like love of our fellow human beings, is stronger than any religious text that is out of date and out of touch with the modern world

Mock away.

It's akin to 'attack the idea, not the person'. I'd never mock someone for supporting the Tory's or being a meat eater, but I might question their views and values, and pick apart the documenta that they believe in.

I mean yeah, you can do what you want. But just taking the piss out of someone for their personal views makes you look like an ignorant twat, who is incapable of actually having an adult discussion.

Speaking purely personally, I have never had the slightest interest in following any religion. From a very early age I was arguing the logic (or lack thereof) as I see it in the bible with clergy. I have no need of a belief in a spirit being nor of an afterlife. I am not a sheep and require no shepherd. I genuinely feel that people should do good things because they want to, not because they feel obliged to in order to please a spirit being and get into the good seats in heaven (or avoid hell).

I do find religions and religious beliefs curious and sometimes interesting. And I find myself feeling very uncomfortable in places of worship while finding some of them marvellous buildings....from the mad design of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia to the splendour of York Minster or the simpleness of a 1000 year old village church.

Absolutely, although I can agree things probably would have been a bit different through history without religion...the goalposts tend to move a lot with religion, it's been ok to burn people on the crime of heresy, stone people to death..all in the name of a god.

I'm afraid to tell you it hasn't!

Just as somebody who has faith that there skin colour makes them better than another's or a belief that a persons sexuality or sex makes them weaker.

Not only should your "faith" be attacked but it must be attacked!.

Find one part of this thread where someone of faith attacks atheism. You won't. Take your pick of the atheist attacks on religion. Go figure."

.

That's because you can't pick on somebody not having a belief?

Let me put it another way

Why should you be able to pick on the belief someone has, that there white skin is between than your black skin!

Or that there faith in their masculinity is greater than femininity!.

Why should any idea not be attacked... The whole point of Good ideas, is that they stand up against ridicule and inspection!

This crying by religious people of bullying is quite frankly disgusting considering the bullying religion has done in the past!

It's there swan song of rebuke these days!

"I'm not religious, I was Christened and went to a C of E school both not by choice.

I chose to go to catholic school at 11 and found that when I left at 18 I chose to continue being religious.

I understand not everyone gets that choice. And I certainly wasn't brainwashed since being non-Catholic meant I could choose if I wanted to attend religious events at school.

People say we're all stupid and brainwashed into it. Some of us are actually reasonably intelligent adults who have thought long and hard about theology and have decided what is right for *us*.

Atheism is the belief that there definitely isn't a God. It's actually easy to attack I just can't be bothered and don't consider myself a cunt.

As James bond said...you can never say never!

I certainly wouldn't say there's definitely no God!.

I'd say it's very very very very unlikely as that's what the evidence from logical thinking says.

You most certainly should attack somebody for holding illogical irrational beliefs, regardless of whether it makes you look like a cunt!

It's by doing things like this why we've abandoned slavery and homophobia!

I understand that these dsys you dont need to believe in any particular religion to know right from wrong and have morals. But as a little thought experiment, imagine if religion had never existed. Do you think that your morals and idea of what is wrong or right would be exactly the same?

Well a lot of people would be less keen on genital mutilation and chucking gays off buildings.

Genital mutilation is not a religious custom, it's a cultural one. That's why it happens in some countries, and not others, even countries that share the same religion.

Also not all regious people are homophobic, and not all homophobic people are religious.

.

I think you'll find the Jewish idea of cutting a boys foreskin off is a religious custom!

Genesis 10 14-17!"

But most men in America are circumcised, yet it is not a majority Jewish country there are many people on fab who aren't Jewish and yet are circumcised, so its not purely a religious practise is it?

From wiki the origin of circumcision isn't actually known, it's believed to have been part of "religious sacrifice, a rite of passage, hygiene reasons" and a few others.

Dates way back to ancient Egypt.

I think that you will find that this country, and many other countries who outlawed slavery, were very religious when they did it. You seem to be suggesting that a belief in God equals a belief in slavery, and that when people stopped believing in God, they stopped believing in slavery. That is NOT what happened.

I don't see why you would want to attack people for illogical or irrational beliefs. Do you attack people who believe in ghosts? aliens? astrology? mediums? lucky socks? shouting at the TV?talking to their pets?

I'm telling you if your Jewish it's religious..

It's there in genesis.

You'll find that wherever Jewish people live in any country... They practice circumcision!

That's not cultural... That's religious

It's weird when you think about it, we've got this furry dude with four legs living with us, neither of us can understand what each other are saying but we just accept it and get on with it

You keep conflating things!

I said attacking illogical irrational beliefs is the only way forward, the same way as attacking the irrational belief that black people should be slaves to be owned or that women are less of a person than males or that being gay is something wrong!

What your saying is yes... Let's attack those irrational illogical beliefs... But not mine!

No, I'm agreeing with what is said above, you can attack everyone you want who you see as behaving irrationally, you can verbally attack religious people, people who talk to their pets, people who cheer on their favorite sports team whilst watching tv etc. But you'll probably end up looking like a cunt!

Is it rational to tie a coloured cloth noose around your neck to go to work? Not really, but many people do.

Is it rational to put candles into a cake and set fire to them momentarily before blowing them out and making a wish on the anniversary of your birth? Again not really, but a lot of people do it.

So if you are going to attack irrational beliefs, make sure you attack them all, because you wouldn't want to be like us hypocritical religious folk who pick and chose which rules to follow
