So based on an earlier thread, it seems like there are a lot of dog owners on the forums. What breed have you got? I would love an English Springer Spaniel.

I have an English Springer Spaniel, a black and white show type spaniel. I love her very much, she is beautiful. She is pampered, goes to the groomers regularly to have her show cut, wears doggy perfume and has a pink anorak with white fur around the hood for those cold days.

We have two staffs they're called our kids as they need more attention then our two teens!

One of our staffs is getting on in years and has turned into a right grumpy git. He also has a built in clock and waits at his food bowl dead on time. He also has to have fresh water in his bowl to drink every time he wants water.

They both enjoy going in the car daily and if you don't take them they will sit by the front door until you do. Everyone that comes to the house is here to see them in their eyes and will hunt out all the fuss they can get.

Wouldn't change them for the world but a night off would be nice now and then. Lol

Chocolate and tan short haired dachshund called George.

Quite hard work for such a small dog, being a hunting dog his toys become his "prey" and he goes around destroying things one after the other. Thinking he's killing them.

He will chase anything from leaves blowing in the wind to rabbits that live in the field across from our house.

And trying to hide anything from him is impossible "the nose knows" is what we say

Would love to have a basset hound or a bloodhound as well

They are wonderful dogs. Very intelligent, energetic, sweet natured, loyal. They are excellent family dogs, but they do need exercise as they love running outdoors. You have to put the time in with them and they have to have enough walks, as they can be prone to be destructive if not. They can steal food, going through bins etc, and aren't guard dogs.

If you invest the time as a pup with walking on leads, they can have a tendency to pull, teach not to steal, take them long walks every day, you will gain a loyal and friendly friend.

Oh and they will chase birds whenever they are out

I'm not a fan of the contrived 'mix' names so generally just say what their crosses are if anyone asks.

Pretty well rounded response. ESS's (if you get a dog with working lines) are one of the hardest working dogs there are. They only get destructive if you do not invest time in them. They are a dog unlike any other and are not a dog for everybody due to their high physical strength and energy and intelligence. But yes, great dogs all weather dogs, they are not a house dog, you will be muddy and wet

We have plenty of meadows (no livestock) and parks and even lakes just a few hundred metres from our front door so there are plenty of places to walk run and play. I want a dog that I can train to be obedient, and hopefully to do some tricks, so I thought an intelligent working dog like the ESS would be good.

I have never had a dog, always had cats when I was growing up. My cousins had dogs, but they never trained them at all. They have had black Labradors recently, but they jump all over you, won't get down, climb all over the furniture, lick your face etc. The dog rules the house, which is not what I'm looking for.

Having numerous breeds of dogs over the years I have to say my 2 German shepherds are like a double act. Although they are guard dogs and protective they seem to have a this way of knowing their own breed while out walking. We see many dogs on our travels and it always amazes me when we see other German Shepherds...it's like they know their own

I go in as a pound puller. When there is a space in a rescue I volunteer with we retrieve 1 from deaths door. Ie, day 8 in the pound. Destruction day. I have to walk past the rest, who maybe have a few days left. Try that, then see if you still wish to breed.

ESS's are renowned for running households. They jump up both at persons, furniture, beds, anything they can. They are ferociously quick and have bursts of speed. They are called "springers" for a reason - they literally spring! They will find a muddy pool on a dry summers day - ask anyone that owns one, they're called 'mud-magnets'. If you have never owned a dog before, they are one of the hardest first breeds dogs to own. They are a distinct challenge. To give you an idea of their intelligence and physical strength - think why they are used by mountain rescue, police, prisons, army bomb detection, passive searches, cancer & epilepsy detection not least breed purpose being finding game and entering trial competitions. No other breed has such a wide field of activity - their physical stamina is on max constantly.

They are not a dog for tricks. They are not a roll over and play dead dog, they are one of the old breeds of English dogs there is, bred for the field to spring game and retrieve shot birds. To advise - they can chew if bored, I mean destructively destroy tables, cushions, doors, shoes if behaviour is not appropriately corrected. Their intelligence means you will lose your rag with them and you will fail them, as they will be getting the attention. They can get separation anxiety quite badly if left for long periods. Working line springers depending on pedigree have been bred for stamina and ability to take training. So many of these dogs are fostered / put into rescue so early on because owners simply do not realise what they are getting themselves into. If you think a labrador jumps up a lot and a springer wont because it's smaller; a springer will out-last pretty much any dog there is and keep going and going and going and going and .... you get the idea. Hope the info is useful

Going on from the ESS discussion, my Springer spaniel is show line, she has been bred for the show ring.

There are distinctive differences. She looks different, she has a squarer jaw, very long curled ears, long feathering on her legs, fluffy chest hair. Her temperament is different too. She prances when walking, she likes to potter around sniffing grass, she doesn't forage through every bush she sees, just every other one lol, she doesn't like water, though that might change as she's only young, she is not quite as energetic as her working line comrades.

She still retains similar traits though, shes very intelligent, you can't fool her by hiding something, she's not a stealing dog as such, apart from chocolate and cakes, she's not submissive, she still needs lots of walks, she is energetic, just not as much as the working lines, she will chase any bird

"I have an English Springer Spaniel, a black and white show type spaniel. I love her very much, she is beautiful. She is pampered, goes to the groomers regularly to have her show cut, wears doggy perfume and has a pink anorak with white fur around the hood for those cold days. "

I might have to call in the dog warden to rescue her so she can chase rabbits and get coated in mud which springers love

"english springer spaniel here, from working stock, nutty as a fruitcake but gorgeous with it

Are ESS good dogs?

They are wonderful dogs. Very intelligent, energetic, sweet natured, loyal. They are excellent family dogs, but they do need exercise as they love running outdoors. You have to put the time in with them and they have to have enough walks, as they can be prone to be destructive if not. They can steal food, going through bins etc, and aren't guard dogs.

If you invest the time as a pup with walking on leads, they can have a tendency to pull, teach not to steal, take them long walks every day, you will gain a loyal and friendly friend.

Oh and they will chase birds whenever they are out

Pretty well rounded response. ESS's (if you get a dog with working lines) are one of the hardest working dogs there are. They only get destructive if you do not invest time in them. They are a dog unlike any other and are not a dog for everybody due to their high physical strength and energy and intelligence. But yes, great dogs all weather dogs, they are not a house dog, you will be muddy and wet"

The last border collie the family had was when I was an early teens, the mother had won one man and his dog several times. Only reason we got her was she didn't want to be trained, we used to run her for about 2 to 3 hours on a school field to tire her out. The bugger still pulled on the lead afterwards, she was a brilliant dog. Like someone else said working dogs need heaps of exercise.

"I have a black Labrador and a blue (grey) greyhound

Totally different dogs you couldn't get two more different personalities but both adorable in their own way

we had a greyhound, lovely, lovely dogs, wonderful personalities, love a sofa lol. His name was William "

they are total couch potatos, i think a lot of people think they are high maintenance energetic dogs but they really aren't, very timid, lazy, laid back dogs, mine sleeps all day and when you wake him up for a walk he looks at you in a rather stuck up way as if you say....what the hell you doing

they are great for people who want a low energy easy to look after dog

"Maybe I could get one without my landlord knowing? "

Offer your landlord more money to go on top of your deposit. I did and was allowed to keep my two dogs.

I have a pedigree 6 month old British Bulldog from a championship bloodline (I'll start to put her in shows soon). I also have a rescue dog which is Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross. Both full of energy and give lots of hugs!

"Chocolate and tan short haired dachshund called George.

Would love to have a basset hound or a bloodhound as well "

We have a black & tan silver dapple mini Dachshund called Monty. He's 8 & a half and still thinks he's a puppy. The same with his toys and will chase a blade of grass if it moves. Adore him, such a big little dog...and with a big dog woof
