How old was you when you had your first Dumbell/Barbell set? Considering buying my son a Dumbell set his 12 years old, physically strong for his age and always using mine when I'm not around, thinking of the 15/20kg York barbells you get in the case. Anybody had any bad experiences?

Brighton - even Hove!

he is still growing. Leave it until he has grown. He could cause more harm than good.

Stoke area

I asked my gym instructor about weights for my son. He suggested 14 as a sensible age to consider weights.

I think it isn't recommended that kids start with weights until 13-14.

Or better still, send him to a boxing club too. Fantastic enviroment for boys to also learn disciple etc from the older ones.

There's no scientific basis that I've ever been able to find that supports an age limit for resistance training.

The idea that it damages growing tissues or 'fuses' young bones is just an old wives (Doctor, PE teacher, etc) tale.

The irony is that most sports that people would traditionally push you towards are far more likely to accelerate joint wear and tear if not significant injury (don't see many ACL tears from the gym).

So, as you may have gathered, I'd say that any kid with a decent level of coordination and the sense to use weights could definitely benefit from them. Perhaps finding someone to show him how is just as important as its is one of those things that everyone thinks they can advise on, hence some of the comedy videos that fill the Internet of ridiculous training inventions.

There's so much to learn about nutrition which is far far more important with regards to bring able to reach goals. You could help him to see that magazines and adverts are pretty much useless. It takes a while to grasp enough about proteins, fats and carbs... I'd start there. And teach him how to cook for himself!!

Too young at 12. Tendons, muscles and bones are still developing. Wait a couple of years.then he will grow if keeps at it.most kids think a few months on the gym they will look like the blokes advertising protein shakes. They fail to admit they are full of gear.

Not all, but the vast majority. There's a large scene for naturals.

My daughter uses small weights and kettle bells with me. Looking at this thread maybe I should stop her, she's only 6.
