Couldn't see a thread on it anywhere so sorry if it's been posted before.
It's causing absolute chaos for us here. The diversion route is about 40 miles longer than just being able to cross.
They say it's going to be closed until after new year too which is absolutely horrendous. All because of a 2 cm crack in one of the tower support beams. Nothing like a bit of drama but it was the sun I think reported that sections of the bridge are going to fall into the forth. |

A 2cm crack in some steel that thousands of vehicles cross every day...you can't piss about with this stuff. Can imagine it's a nightmare for you, but possibly not as much as plunging to a watery death. |

"why dont you use the other three?
Other 3??? There's only the rail bridge but I work shifts and trains don't run at the times I start or finish. "
I think he means as in first, second, third and Forth. but I can imagine you don't find much room for humour in it. Driving an extra 80 miles a day must be gutty not to mention the extra fuel costs. |

Maybe if in 2006 when it was recognised that a replacement was required the government had got on with building the new bridge rather than spending 5 years faffing around with studies, enquires and acts of parliaments then the bridge would have been finished years ago at a cheaper cost... |

We were planning going further north yesterday but caught the closure on the news in hotel, so decided to head south instead, lucky really as had we left it for today we would have got caught up in the storm around Carlisle |

hellishly inconvenient , but's not like the blitz....
In years too come they won't write songs about it..
Oh and I'm one of those people inconvenienced by it's closure ... |

It is inconvenient for thousands of people and businesses. It's reported that there are eight other places on the bridge that have the same defect. Imagine if they allowed the bridge to remain open and god forbid it colasped. How many hundreds would be injured, probably worse. I don't use the Forth Road bridge but I daily drive the bridge that 70,000+ vehicles will now have to use. People's lives and safety are more important in my opinion. |

The other 2 bridges are a logistical nightmare for travelling from fife, there are no real main routes, both bridges lead onto the same roundabout once over them, it is already a 44 mile approx detour, head to stirling and it becomes 71 mile ish detour. All roads to both bridges from fife are single lane, so 1 break down, accident or weather as happened this morning already brcomes a nightmare. |

If your job and your home is connected mainly by this one fragile route, then you only have yourselves to blame for your lack of planning. I used to live on the Isle of Wight then got a job on the mainland. The ferry service in winter was terrible! So, guess what? I moved! A few years later my job involved a one hour commute along the M27 which was gridlock, again i moved! Don't expect the world to come to you! |

Perhaps if the british govt invested in the infrastructure of the the road and rail systems throughout scotland as they have in england , this issue would not be happening. The new bridge was first spoken about 20 years ago. |

It's not throughout England. The second Tyne tunnel that was built (which was desperately needed) got a grand total of zero government support so had to be totally self financing from tolls. A toll bridge or reinstating the old toll is probably your best bet of getting a new crossing any time soon. |

Maybe this whole affair is to highlight the need for investment.....after all the RAF only got its new anti submarine planes when we couldn't find the Russian submarines... |

I've never felt the need to know where Russian submarines are to be honest, think I'd prefer some bridges |

Transport is a devolved (to Holyrood) power. People can't moan about Westminster interference AND no input from them. |

The new crossing is already in progress, should be open by next dec. the tolls were scrapped due too the congestion they created , which probably over time contributed to the condition of the bridge now. |

If the money for the new bridge, built with Chinese steel (swapped for the pandas) had been used to maintain the old bridge properly, we would be in a situation where we have no major Forth road crossings.
Scrapping the tolls, while popular, has reduced income for investment and it'll be interesting to see what the rushed inspection of the Tay and Erskine bridges will reveal. |

That's a pretty narrow minded view tbh. |

Just a thought... Would a tunnel be better? Bit late now though seeing as a new bridge is on the way. Just I recall the bridge having to close in high winds. |

It would have been an excellent source of money for additional investment though. Shame they went for scrapping it completely rather than moving to open road / free flow tolling like Dartford. |
