Edward Woollard has just been jailed for 32 months for throwing a fire extinguisher from the roof of Tory HQ.
Seems a bit draconian but at least he's saved himself £20k in Uni fees.  |

Let that be a lesson to the rest of them.
Peaceful protest is one thing.
Throwing something off a roof when you know there is a crowd below is inexcusable, it could have killed anyone.
The other thing he has thrown away is his life.

That the chance you take when you do something so stupid in the first place (the student) and yeah his parents maybe did hope for that but in reality probably knew he was going to be made an example of. So still good on them. |

It is interesting to reflect on the fact that the punk anthems of my youth such as Anarchy in the UK by the Pistols and Suspect Device by Stiff Little Fingers are as pertinent and applicable today as when they were written 30 odd years ago.

My, my…… a 32 month stretch,,,,, that’s is an awful long time not to take shower…… so I guess that’s one young lad who’s gonna have to either learn to grin and bare it or bare it and grin………
as the big boys say behind bars….. fresh meat…..
Perhaps his associates who disregarded not only public safety and that of the police whilst cause their wilful damage to public property might benefit from considering that.
All part the real world of crime and punishment…

The student deserved every little bit of the prison sentence he received, there is no excuse for his actions.
Equally it would have been a fair indication of the merits of the British justice system if the police officer who had a part in the death of the innocent newspaper vendor had been charged and faced trial for his actions.
The way that was brushed under the carpet was disgusting. |

Every day I read a story in the paper that makes me shake my head in disbelief. Murder, mayhem, and the culprits are offered tea and sympathy, and all kinds of coun
The victims on the other hand, are left to pick up the pieces as best they can. Now, a student, in a moment of madness is carted of to prison. He didn't kill anyone, he didn't maim anyone.
Don't get me wrong - he should be punsihed, but a custodial sentence?!!
Only consulation for him, he'll be safe for a few months. The prisons are filled with council tax dodgers and people who haven't paid their tv license - the criminals are walking freely amongst us! |

A custodial sentence was a must.
A fine and or some kind of community service would not have acted as a deterrent to the next idiot.
32 months will.
Harsh perhaps, but i'd rather see one guy serve the sentence for the given time, than see one family lose a husband, son, brother and suffer for a lifetime because they got hit on the head with a fire extinguisher.

If said student chucked a fire extinguisher anywhere near Sharon,he`d be still walking around bow legged, contemplating what soup to `ave of the hospital food trolley.....
Unbelievably reckless, and such a reflection of the unintelligent way some of them chose to protest....
Pissing on the Cenotaph......insults the freedoms that were bought with blood......freaking moronic at best.....
I do sincerely hope the spoilt reprobate learns his lesson inside..... |

he could have killed someone.
so i think the punishment is fair as no one was hurt.

As an apre`s...and without knowing the ins and outs of the situation.....
If its indeed true that his parents shopped him to the police...what wonderful parents they are...principled,and teaching their son an important lesson in life..taking responsibilty for your actions/choices and paying the price..a rarely seen occurence in todays society...
I hope within time he can see in himself what a blessing in disguise his parents choices are..and furthermore his parents are at peace with themselves..bless em! |

we have been having this discussion today at work...
yes what he did was irresponsible and a moment on madness.... but 32 months seems incredibly harsh, especially since he pleaded guilty at the earliest possible oppotunity.
and yet the MP who fiddled expenses, then tried to get out of it by using parlimentry priviledge gets 18 months....
it feels to me that they were looking for a scapegoat... |

For me, it was the MP who got the soft sentence rather than the student geting the harsh one.
And to the poster above, i agree that it was a good thing that his parents both stood up and then stood by him.

Yeah, the inequities of our justice system leave me with aching jaw muscles too!
Fecking whitewashes et al,but I don`t think two wrongs make a right ,if I can get away with putting it like that...
The youths sentence wasn`t disproportunate to me..the other cases mentioned on the thread should of been dealt with in an accordingly similar way.. |

32 months give the remission be will get seems very light for an act that could have killed someone.
Mind you he'll be punished for the rest of his life
We he grows up and goes back to school or university and then looks for a job none of the nice professional well paid jobs that he might have got will be open to him with that record.
And travel? Well forget that- will not get into the USA and half the countries in the world either. |

The guy with the fire extinguisher and the copper from Newcastle who thought it was ok to rape people because they were drug addicts and nobody would believe them if they said anything.
