So....
I am suppose to go out with the uni lot tonight for a christmas bash and we all rub along just fine, I get the "grandad" jokes and I get to tell them what it was like in my day...
But I am making my excuses and bailing as the next oldest to me is 10 years younger and I feel a little uncomfortable going out for a night in Bristol with the buggers. I have told them I can't arrange accommodation (though the truth is I could probably arrange a hotel or something).
Am I being overly age sensitive? I just don't want to feel like some weird old bloke (now before you reply that I am, be aware I am a sensitive soul ) |

One of the coolest guys we tend to go to the pub with is almost 50. He is great fun and would be the first person I would invite if given the choice.
It's about your attitude, not your age.

"Dude, you're 40. Thats not old
Go.
Party....before you really are too old to do so.
"
I never quantified how old 'too old' was! Dont make me have to spank you now!

I think your being over sensitive, I used to sometimes go out on student nights, I wasn't that much older than them but I was married with a child.
Used to have a great time, plus drinks and clubs where cheap the only thing that put me off was the horrendous noise in the clubs they chose my ears would be dead for days |

"Enjoy the watered down warm beer and avoid any foam party invites - worst time of my life! "
Last time I was at uni (30 that time). I ended up being debagged by Coventry University Netball Team for suggesting they had their acronym on the back of their hoodies... I am not sure I am cut out for this! |

Why not go with the pre-emptive, 'if its shit I will make my excuses' - the best nights are usually the ones you are not really up for. It may turn out you will have a blast, might even get laid, and you will wonder what you were originally fussing about. Go for it! |

Or spend a lonely night in a hotel. Well I am close to biting some sort of bullet... |

I absolutely understand how you feel and there's very little point spending an uncomfortable evening. I felt exactly the same when our daughter invited us to Wetherspoons on her 21st. One drink and make your excuses would be my favoured option, if after the one drink you feel comfortable...stay.
Whatever you decide hope you enjoy. |

I think you are being a bit over sensitive and maybe your the only one who sees your age as an issue.
If you go to the toilet and when you get back their all gone then I guess I was wrong.... |

"Bricking myself. Of all the things I have done in the world, why does this fill me with fear? "
Because your perception is that you will be out of your comfort zone. You are entitled to feel that way and there's no shame in it. We've all seen the older hanger on and none of us wants to be that person however I'm pretty sure that you'll be able to tell if you're in danger of that happening |

Well thanks for convincing me you lovely lot. I think I didn't do so bad after all...
My shoulder has been well and truly cried on, I may have achieved legendary status as "the old man with hollow legs", and there may (just may) be some CCTV footage from Bristol that I shouldn't be proud of...
Now I need a lie down and possibly my slippers

I have several great friends who are 20+ years older than me. They can drink me under the table, swear as much as I do, talk filth and generally are fabulous company. Go out, have fun and stop worrying about the age gap. |
