Google isn't helping.
Is the definition a bad guy in a motorcycle gang?
A guy with lots of gold chains and a track suit?
I've seen no chavs written in profiles and I'm trying to figure out if I'm one.
Sorry in advance if I offended anyone |

It's English slang to describe a class of person. Usually found living in a poorer area of a town, wearing a tracksuit and cheap jewelery. Usually foul mouthed and jobless and living off of the state.
Chav stands for council housed and violent. |

I suppose the American equivalent may be a ghetto bunny or a hoochie mama? |

Chav was originally a romany word, short for Chavvi meaning Child. It was frequently used in parts of Essex when i was very young, long before it was given a new meaning. It's been said to be an acronym for a few things, Chatham Average was another I've heard.

It's me!!! Not offended, most of us stopped giving a fuck what society thinks of us a long time ago.
I use lazy sounding words a lot like nah, yeah, but am really intelligent, just don't feel like using things to my full potential and only invest myself in what's worth my time or what's of interest.
The meaning now is supposed to be an insult, that we're lazy, scroungers (er no we work hard when there's benefits to that, and probably not in what society thinks is work). We actually used to be called the working class until physical work was taken over by machines or made easier using factory means of production.
We also get slagged off a lot for creating a system and community where we can survive on very little money, some of it is through illegal activities though.
We're the anarchists of society who will use the system to get what we want but won't bow down to it, in fact we are constantly battling it to retain our place in it and create something better for those on our level and above us who would be us/will be us when society doesn't need them either. |

Clothing wise we wear whatever we want to, usually is fashionable stuff though for those who care about it, just because they're anarchists doesn't mean they don't care to subscribe to fashion and promoting an image, think the Kardashians for the women (this is so not me) and yeah sports stuff for the guys coz they actually do go out a lot and do stuff.
Not sure what you have over there that's the equivalent, tempted to say your rednecks but i don't quite think we are the same there because our whole way of living in each country is structured differently. |

Your Encyclopaedia of Useless Information is full of Urban myths unfortunately. That's just a fortunate acronym that happens to fit the perceived stereotype. |

Having experienced both cultures, I'll just point out that Chav would not be the equivalent of a recheck or trailer trash. Both are too much a product of their societies to be compared.
Not sure I could accurately define a Chav without some contextual knowledge of British culture.

Let's include Mcdees and the chicken and chip shop. Anything to get out of cooking. And crisps and chocolate for breakfast. Mcdees is the treat for children of divorced parents on daddy day for the middle classes.
Chavvy's children talk back to teachers and call them dick heads, occasionally throwing something at them. Don't forget Ugg boots and pyjamas for the school run. |

Don't get them in village. However if you venture to the MK Shopping centre you can see this fascinating species thriving in its natural environment. Beautiful to see in the wild. |

Chav is Romany for child (chavvi). I have Romany heritage* and we would often be called chavvi when we were kids when we'd got into a bit of a mess playing outside.
Popular culture has given it the acronym of council house and violent.

"Chav comes from Romany Gypsy word for a child."
The question was asked what do people mean by saying no Chavs,on here. I think it's safe to say they aren't saying no Romany gypsy children. |

The thread is titled
'What's is the REAL definition of chav?'
the answer I gave is correct the longer version
'probably from Romany chavo 'boy, youth' or chavvy 'baby, child': sometimes said to have originated in Chatham, Kent, and to be a shortening of that name.' |

But the opening post questioned why people put no Chavs. The OP isn't to know it has nothing to do with the real or original meaning of Chav. As you can see the real meaning has been lost over time and mutated to mean any undesirable person. |

A term bastardised to help maintain class separation and to give 'the people' something to hate rather than directing that hate in the direction of the the establishment. Divide and separate.
I grew up with the word used in place of 'mate' seem to recall it being 'chavi mush' and then shortened to either 'chav' or 'mush' ... mainly used by the Appleby boot wearing (and Appleby fair attending) element of my mates.
In the context of swinging; I guess 'no chavs' means no people that I consider to be below my allocated/perceived class level. |

So chav started out as a Romany word , and now it's used to describe the poor people.
I have traveled around Europe and notice people don't like Romany people in almost every country I've been too.
I never knew the British had Romany people also.
It's funny you come on a swinging site and learn some history. |

Its not cockney, the cockneys have a fair few of the Cant words......
Chavvi or chav is a Romany word of ancient date.
You will hear pure Romani spoken by the Highland Traveling/Gipsy folks, untainted by external influences and Chavvi is used extensively by us.

I've never been convinced by any of the explanations for where the word comes from considering they've been called charvers in Newcastle for years before I ever heard the word chav in the media. |

I've read about half of the posts.
What rubbish is spouted and believed.
Read the Little Book of Chavs.... and follow it with The Demonisation of the Working Class by Owen Jones for as full an explanation as is available.
Chav has a different meaning according to who is using it.
