Why are we successful at some things and not others.
I'm not talking about academically.
Things like running marathons, giving up alcohol, losing weight, quitting smoking.
Is it simply about the want and willpower or something more.
If its just about willpower then why do we succeed at something's and not others?
Is it just a case of not wanting a certain thing bad enough.
This is brought on by my ability to have conquered over the years many things but not be able to give up smoking.
I'm not attempting to at the moment, I've achieved so much and not going to beat myself up about it.
But it is going to be something I want to achieve in the future.

I think we find it easier to achieve things that are strongly linked to deep seated motivations. Things that are tied to what we value most provide the necessary energy to persevere when faced with obstacles. Turning off the negative messages in our head that sabotage our best efforts also helps. |

I've never really been someone to make a goal and stick to it, so I've never had that sense of achievement, all the usual stuff in everyday life but I wouldn't call them achievements as such.
The one thing I am proud of recently is fighting for something I was going to throw away and standing up for myself from a bully that was trying to control my life x |

"My personal opinion is that it's completely down to desire. If you want to do it "enough" then you won't be stopped.
Cal" this is my way of thinking, but I can't work out why I desire something's more than others.
I'm going to start imagining my life as a non smoker and how different it would be

If I've got a load of shizz to do I find it hard to get the initial motivation usually end up putting stuff off all day and then get the sudden urge to start doing things around 9pm |

I need patience!! (Sorry Shag!)
I lose motivation because I get bored and then things go a bit tits!
The only exceptions here are with animals and children. Endlessly patient with them x |

"I find being motivated and staying motivated very difficult even when I can clearly see the end result will benefit me. "
Maybe you are more motivated by something else that means you prioritise that rather than the goal you aren't achieving. |

What ever it is I have lost some of it recently.
When ever I was on out cycling if I saw someone in front of me I had to chase them down, even if it killed me. It didn't matter if it was on the flat, uphill or what I had to catch them, I would kick myself if I didn't at least try. Now I don't seem to have the instinct anymore. |

Interest, self belief, will power, self respect and pride.
For instance, to be successful at anything you need to show some interest in it, weather it be running, playing football or giving up drink, if you don't want it, you won't do it. |

can so relate to that..
knocked it on the head when i was getting into work knackered though..
on the OP's position, there is a difference between 'wanting to' and 'having to', clearly the latter will always provide more will power etc.
The right reason is always the one that works best.. |

If it involves £££££ that's enough to motivate me. I've heard all the "money can't buy you happiness" rubbish. Like it or not money is what gets us out of bed in the mornings. |
