Sometimes U.K

Read a comment on a thread about trolling, which I had to Wiki as didn't know what it meant, besides being a funny looking Nordic creature.

The poster wrote 'Obviously we expect it from the forums, troll troll troll seems to be the main ethos / goal on these forums'

Long as there are internet forums, there will be trolls. As sure as shit stinks. The saying 'dont feed the trolls' is best remembered by anyone encountering them.. but unfortunately many people fan the flames - intentionally or otherwise

It was us.... And yes... It's true.. You can say' I like the colour yellow ' and one woman will say "no that's wrong" and 117 men will follow saying "yeah that's wrong".... Then it gets even more immature (20 years old here) but a valued opinion, a completely normal gripe / comment can literally get trolled... For absolutely no reason whatsoever... Bar one negative comment that everyone follows... Usually from a female... Everyone will just carry on trolling after a female trolls or disagrees

I don't think there is much on here and most of what there is, is very obvious.

Ie: I think so and so are disgusting and shouldn't be on here.

Or something like it.

I think a lot of comments get mislabelled as trolling when someone is sarky, or disagrees with someone.

The true meaning of a troll doesn't appear here very often.

It's generally thrown out when a thread doesn't fill with answers the OP wants to hear. It's a public forum, not everyone will agree but resorting to calling people with different opinions trolls doesn't paint anyone in a good light. Forums are a huge big extra filter. That little green arrow is gold.

Just the way some people are. Probably a little unhappy inside so need to share it.

we do have a lot of bullying is that the same as trolling but usually the threads get pulled quite quickly at least in one forum room. stupid to trollor bully anyone cos its only words on a screen. i just think trolls and bullies are sad lonely creatures with no life apart from their online one.

I thought I knew what trolling was. It has a specific meaning on the internet.

Then I disagreed with someone and got accused by them of trolling.

Now I think that trolling has a different meaning on fab. Here, it is just when someone disagrees with you.

there's several meanings for internet troll. the official one is a person who is a bully, makes nasty comments for the sake of upsetting people.

other types of trolling, which are more common, are the ones who just don't take threads seriously and mess about on the forums (i do this when bored, and so do many others) and i reckon this is what you're referring to. dunno what other types, have forgot already had at least one more in my head though.

Trolling is pathetic but we'll probably disagree about when someone is doing it. Certainly some seem to not think too much about who they'll affect by their posts sometimes.

It's not as frequent here as a more anonymous forum - thank goodness, it would ruin fab.

Generally it's better to post by thoughts, rather than driven by emotion, as trolls will largely wish to inflame you emotionally. It's worth taking a pause to relax a moment and consider whether what you have to say really adds anything positive to debate here.

And always let go of the urge to correct others, or make things equal, settling scores etc.

The more intelligent you are, the greater the numbers of people who are less so than you. They will sometimes think and post somewhat stupid things - it's ok to not be responsible for educating them.

Trolls - not all the comments you see will be trolling, but a reflection upon someone's inability to restrain themselves or not emphasize their ignorance etc.

Great explanation and it's interesting what many define as trolls.

Seems the conclusion is rather than trolling, it's a difference of opinion, of which we're all entitled to.

A troll is usually anyone who doesn't agree with you, not you personally but on some forums, if you disagree with someone or the general opinion you get labelled a troll. Should we bomb Syria for example? Everyone says no, 1 person pops up and says yes, that person will be labelled a troll by idiots

A proper troll is a joy to witness, although I think some people on here seem not to understand the meaning of the word in its original context. Also, the fact that threads can only go on for 175 posts stops them from ever really going anywhere.

The best trolls start with an OP that could be construed in more than one way and is deliberately inflammatory. The OP then sits back and watches the chaos as the forum descends into baying factions, former friends become enemies, at least two people flounce.... The OP never returns to the thread.

Good, but not great trolls start the same way, but the OP reappears occasionally to stir the pot, usually not really engaging with any of the other posters.

Both can be entertaining on the right day.

Of course the majority of what is deemed as trolling is merely a difference of opinion and people get annoyed when this happens.

Trolling and disagreeing are very different things but I often see the latter being mistaken for the former on here. That doesn't mean there isn't occasionally an element of real trolling either; but I don't think it's as common as it sometimes appears to be made out to be.

There are some posters who seem to thrive on negativity and actively seem to seek it (I say seem judiciously; I am happy to be proved wrong). It doesn't make them trolls, just makes them people with a very different outlook to life and fab than me.

Essentially I think it's quite good on here. Nothing gets too far out of hand. I've seen FAR worse behaviour on other sites, nevermind what you pick up in the press about Twitterstorms &c.

BUT just because someone disagrees with you, doesn't make them a troll.

A troll is an individual who sets out to be inflammatory, argumentative and willing to take the other POV just to annoy others.

"I've not read the whole thread but I personally think things become 'trolly' on here when someone disagrees with someone else AND then starts hurling personal insults.

And that does happen

This

That's not a troll, that's a disagreement."

So it's ok to hurl insults if you disagree with someone?

It's just not nice to witness when it starts to get personal, there's no reason what so ever to throw personal abuse at someone just because you don't agree with their opinion.

"BUT just because someone disagrees with you, doesn't make them a troll.

A troll is an individual who sets out to be inflammatory, argumentative and willing to take the other POV just to annoy others.

"

This is all correct.

No it definitely isn't ok. But it doesn't make them a troll just like it doesn't make them a Volkswagon Beetle.

I have a handful of my own personal trolls who show up here and there in an attempt to sink my threads, but I don't really mind as they typically end in me delivering an intellectual slapping to them and displaying my wit

Brighton - even Hove!

"A troll is usually anyone who doesn't agree with you, not you personally but on some forums, if you disagree with someone or the general opinion you get labelled a troll. Should we bomb Syria for example? Everyone says no, 1 person pops up and says yes, that person will be labelled a troll by idiots"

Ah-ha! 'Twas, I! The person who said no to bombs and yes, indeed, I was personally attacked. I didn't fail to see the irony in an individual attack rather than a mass bombing campaign either

Although I think I went to bed.

The trolls don't, hence why they keep coming back for more, a bit like that Koala that keeps poking the pylon, gets electrocuted and falls off, then climbs back up for another go on the Simpsons.

On sites like this you have to do what is right for yourself and not take others hang ups on and let them get you down .. If you dont like what people say or do block and move on and dont let them get to you down as lifes to short .
