Christmas??

Should Christmas be compulsory? Is Christmas already compulsory?

I think it is.Just try telling people that you don't do Christmas and get their reactions.

I may be an old misery but,,,I don't like overeating, gluttony, tyrkey or mince pies,,,,,I don't like excess and greed,,,,I don't feel like being told I have to celebrate, when I don't know what I'm supposed to be celebrating.

I'm only too happy to say to people,,''please,,do not buy me a gift'',,,but some people just insist on doing it,,,which means that I then have to buy them something too (probably something they have no use for anyway).

In this way,I feel that people are being forced into something they don't want, like or have any control over.

Would Jesus have approved? I don't think so.

Anybody else,like me,,,,just feel Anti-Christmas?

xx

Yep.

I asked my 6 yr old what Xmas means. She said, it's about people giving you presents.

I'm like, OK, so the whole thing is about spending money?

She's not far off.

I don't buy gifts for anyone, don't even buy cards. Went shopping the other day for normal shopping and saw just about everything for sale was crap people wouldn't even buy if it wasn't christmas (except lights, lights are cool all year round).

And yeah loads of it is wasteful stuff. Half of it will probably be unwanted by the recipient too.

We've never stocked up on loads of food, even had to rely on food hamper donations a few times. But will be having a christmas dinner, not a massive one but enough for anyone who is coming.

I don't think it's miserable at all not to celebrate something you don't believe in. I won't be going to church either.

I'm lucky my kids are very accepting of this too. Don't know if they'll keep up the tradition and will understand if they don't.

I have a new found joy of Christmas since I now spend it with my bestie and his family.

Lots of games and fun. The kids are only 4 and 7 and the house is full of Christmas spirit.

I agree that over commercialisation of all walks of life have changed how some see things.

For every footballer whose only goal is to own a Ferrari...there are others that will give all to play for their country.

For all those who see Christmas as a consumerist feeding frenzy, there are others who can't wait to see family and share this year's stories and some old as well.

Do you get that thing where people just seem to be intent on forcing you to do Christmas? Somebody buys you something that you really don't need or want and,if you don't buy them something equally useless,,,,you are made to feel like a social outcast.

Personally,I absolutely hate it,,,,peace on earth and goodwill to all men?? what? just one day a year?

I think they should just rename it 'Greed Fest'

As i was growing up, Christmas meant something, Xmas day in my boys Brigade uniform, in church singing, praying & wishing for peace on Earth, Then home for dinner & gifts.

Now days it's more like, Dinner's on, kids screaming wheres my F*****g IPad or Phone, Music blasting & excess amounts of food on the table going to waste.

It's not compulsory. I wouldn't criticise someone else for not wanting to celebrate it, but I love it. There aren't children in my family but as adults it's rare for us to all have time off work at the same time and get to spend time together. I have friends who live round the country who will all be back at the same time because their families are here. Obviously all of these are things you could do at another time in the year but with people living further away from each other and having busy lives, it doesn't happen. It's good to have Christmas to push you into it. Plus I actually do the church bit, and I enjoy that too.

No. Nobody makes me feel like that, i'm very stubborn and pig headed too so that helps lol. People buy me something cheap knowing i won't buy them anything back because they like buying me something that's all.

Anyone i bother with is pretty chill and understands me. I just say thanks and do appreciate what they got me because it was given for the sake of giving and not because anything was expected in return. I could feel guilty about it but without any pressure too i don't feel guilty or tight or bad, i know why i'm not celebrating and so do they, they are celebrating it that's all.

Most people are reciprocal though, i can understand why they'd get pissed at not receiving after being giving, but if you told them already you won't be buying them anything then i don't get why they'd buy you something and expect you to buy for them? That's them trying to control your behaviour, you don't have to let them do that. Stick to your beliefs and have the christmas you want.

That's,kind of,one of my points,,,,why leave it until now? Why not go and see the family more often? Spread that bonhomie throughout the year instaed of cramming it into a (thankfully) short period.
