"Strap yourselves in it's going to get messy. Is this an excuse that Russia needs to get some stomping in?
Putin gonna be mad "
Ironically the scenario of Russian pilots ending up in I.S. hands could unleash a Russian response the rest of the world might welcome..... |

"Ooh what happened, do i need to turn News 24 on??"
The Turks shot-down a Russian warplane which they claim violated their airspace.
2 Russian pilots ejected and landed over the Syrian border possibly into rebel held territory ....

If you believe the Turks and the flight plan they have released it seems that the Russian plane did briefly cross a small finger of Turkish territory.
However it seems to have flown widthways across a very small area and a fast jet would have been in and out in a matter of seconds.
So why the hell did the Turks have to shoot it down?
The Russians are bombing ISIS who are supposedly the enemy of Turkey as well.
I think the Turks have to decide who's side they are REALLY on.
At the moment it doesn't look like they are on ours. |

The Turks are looking after themselves. Putin is hand in hand with Assad, bombing anyone fighting Assads regime. It was bound to turn ugly sooner rather than later. |

"hope the plane wasn't called arch duke ferdinand "
A chilling thought, and it has to be remembered that after the assassination it was the various treaty's and pacts that led down the road to war.
I think NATO should think very hard about article five before things get out of hand. |

All valid points (though how much the Russians are bombing ISIS and how much they're bombing the other anti-Assad rebels is a matter of debate).
However, on the other hand:
- Was it wise for the Russians to be flying close enough to the border to stray across it like that?
- If the Turks are right and they repeatedly challenged the bomber by radio, why didn't the Russians respond? The challenge would probably have been made while the bomber was over Syria ("You are approaching Turkish airspace, please state your intentions" or something).
- If the bomber was in Turkish airspace, was it a navigational error, or were they attacking Syrian rebels sheltering on the Turkish side of the border?
Someone somewhere screwed up badly and if, as the latest reports suggest, one of the Russian crew is dead, this could get very bad. |

Haven't the Russians repeatedly flown over our airspace too and been escorted out?
I think the Russians wouldn't bat an eye at flouting airspace borders in their Syria campaign, but the Turks are playing both sides, US/NATO allies yet allowing Turkish IS fighters and weapons suppliess across it's borders without challenge. |

There will be no reprisals against Turkey over this. Putin will make a big show for his domestic audience in order to keep up his hard-man image. However unlike the Ukraine, Turkey is a member of NATO and is protected by NATO's nuclear umbrella and Putin like all his bully predecessors will not start a hot war with the west because he knows he cannot win. |

I saw a really eye opening interview with Putin. He sat down with a live audience, and anyone could throw a question at him and he would answer. He'd sit there for hours answering stuff, yet you'd never see Cameron ever consider something like that unless he only answers questions planned in advance.

and you don't think that in Putin's Russia where independent and scrutinising journalists have been being topped for several years that his own audience wasn't hand picked..?

From memory, they were over international waterse but very close to our waters in a buffer zone. So not technically doing anything wrong but politically rude...
The trouble is, Turkey is trying to have its cake and eat it...
Part of Europe and Nato but still a Muslim state with some ideals that don't sit well with the rest of the EU... |

The Russians are bombing all of the anti Assad groups. In that little corner where it was bombing, opposition Turkmen fighters are active and these people are openly supported by Turkey. Seemingly they shot both pilot and Navigator as they were descending alive in their parachutes. This could turn really unpleasant actually. |

"Haven't the Russians repeatedly flown over our airspace too and been escorted out?

No, there have been no publicly reported incursions. They have flown close, as they have been doing since the 60's, and are routinely advised of their proximity and escorted by quick reaction fighters until they are clear.
I'm sure they would have received several warnings from Turkey, which they chose to ignore. I'm also sure that Russia will just lie about the events.
The US is bound to have accurate data, the exact sequence of events will no doubt surface in time.
I don't think Russia will want an all out conflict with NATO, and I'm guessing they'll be a bit more circumspect in future. |

Isis was making money from the oil, Russia blow up the oil to stop isis gaining more money then Turkey blow up the plane. So if Turkey is corrupt should they be a member of NATO. USA have got a hidden agenda by training and supplying the rebels to fight and topple the Syria government and also they hate Russia |

Hey Russia, sorry you lost a pilot and a Su-24 today, but isn’t the closest ISIS like 500+ miles away from there? Most of countries doing that, but we warned russian pilots 10 times. according our soldiers resources. there are rules.they must go and just kill isis. not every anti Asad people. Stop killing turkmens. Don't occupy Ukraine. Those kids are crying because of an airplane while there are 300000 people dead in that area.3million syrian people has left from their country and all the syrians people now in turkey .turkey has save thems now almost 4 years .so a lot of trajedi and poor. :- we only defend Turkmens and FSA in syria. Secondly we just shot the plane, cause it was in our territory not in syria ok? Turkey has rights in order to make safer place border. So, fighting PKK, ISIS and other teror groups real supporter of ISIS is Russia itself... ISIS have never really fight against Esed's Russian supported regime... existence of ISIS is used by Russia to legitimize its military intervention and existence in Syria |
