I've been invited to an event as +1 with short notice, it's tonight. It means I've not had time to sort an outfit. I have a few things as a possibility but need to check; is it suitable for a woman to wear cocktail length to a black tie? If not I need to run to my sisters on a borrowing mission. |

"Yes, with diamond necklace.
No bra.
Has to be no bra. Cocktail dress I have is backless "
Shantung silk.....dark green. If it's black it will make your face look too pale. Silk will move better than velvet or other heavy material. It's tempting to suggest doc martins with it. |

Now where did I put that dark green silk dress..
It's long sleeved, mid thigh, backless, autumnal toned sequins. |

Understand the black tie event
If cocktails with black tie dress code a lbd or cocktail dress will do look at the invite if early drinks cocktail dress . Late dinner And dance something a lot longer
Usually any event on a Saturday would involve long gown on a Saturday night for formal less skin showin is better
If I was inviting you to a an event
With me and
You said what do I wear I would say a long black evening dress . Heels and sparkles
It's a safe bet and if it's the first time with that group I would also dress conservatorily |

Pics! Sounds gorgeous.
My experience of black tie events is that there will be women in full length dresses, cocktail dresses and everything in between. It's encompasses a wide variety of styles for women. |

And according to Debretts....
"For ladies, a smart dress (such as a cocktail dress) is appropriate. It can be long or short, as long as it's not too short. It need not be black." |

I did, it was lovely thank you, and lots of money raised for a fantastic charity so all good.
I wasn't the only one wearing a cocktail dress either, I'd say 60% of the ladies attending were. |
