feeding the birds in your garden

Bore da Fabbbers and friends.
Pooch and I have just returned from a rather chilly walk. Heavens the weather has turned colder. I know there is snow forecast for some.of.you. Jolly japes in the snow , sledges and snow men.
Its a delightful time.
Lets not forget our feathered chums in this weather.
So chums we are asking you feed the wild birds this winter, and fresh water too.
They make us smile with their songs and beautiful colours , so lets do our bit to make them smile

I had this discussion with my daughter yesterday and she wanted me to buy bird seed etc..I said no...as the 2 pussies will have a field day id rather not encourage them to fly into the garden of doom...  |

We seldom get birds in our Garden, one neighbour has 3 cats and the other 1, so they are always sitting on the wall, scaring the birds away  |

"We feed the birds every winter got one of those bird feeding stations on our decking also have bird feeders round the garden. The birds do get to know you and trust you let you get quiet close"

Thus time of year you need to change the food you put out. They tend to stop feeding on nuts seeds but will key munching on fat balls. If you have a roast save all the meat fat plus also goose fat from your roasties and let the birds munch away. |

you dont need to feed them all year - plenty of food most of the time - we had to stop for a couple of winters as alot of major building work and land clearing was going on nearby - this disturbed the rat population and they got the food almost as soon as you put it out - those fat balls are brill |

My roof seems to be the local meet up point of every crow in a 30 mile radius, the fuckers be having running battles at 7am!
If you put out slices of bread, wet it first so that the crows cant pick it up and fly away leave nothing for the small birds and in the really cold weather, its water that the birds really need |

I'm the same, I love birds and would happily feed them but to put feed in my garden would be baiting them to their death as my cat just catches and kills everything |

You can get window feeders, be nice to see them right outside the window. I know what you mean about property, my son is trying to find somewhere in London. |

sunflower hearts and mealworms are very popular, go like hot cakes. Top up four feeders every day so I buy in bulk, much cheaper than buying a small bag in a pet store. Always have fresh water for them to drink and bathe in even in winter! Have a cock pheasant and a cock blackbird come every morning for breakfast, they wait for me! |

I'm with you,we have a cat,I'd love to feed the birds I have a big wooden bird stand,but haven't bothered putting any food on it since we adopted the cat |

I've found the most popular feed is Sunflower hearts - the de-shelled seed hearts. Eaten by blue, great, cold and long tailed tits as well as robins, green, bull and gold finches and I think the tiny wrens that stay here. The house and hedge sparrows love them too.
The down side is we had 8 magpies just in one tree this week.
It's also good to add variety and to feed all year where possible.

Looking after a house for a client on the edge of town .feed the birds there regularly and so far on last couple of months they've had as well as the regular birds you see a heron, a pheasent and a woodpecker. .its amazing yo see them so close |
