How to stop a cough

I have a very bad cough, it's so bad that I am often sick or heaving when i cough (sorry for that info), my chest, throat, ribs and ears are soooo painful I cry when I cough. I am on treatment for it from the doc but I have coughed almost constantly for the last 4 days, I have had very little sleep over the past few nights and last night was dreadful.

Now I know my body is making me cough for a reason ( to clear the gunk from my lungs) but I desperatly need some sleep so I wondered if anyone had a sure fire way I could use to stop my coughing just for a few hours so I can get some sleep as I think I will probably start to feel better if I am able to sleep a bit !

Vix vapour rub, the nostril spray and some sort of heartburn/acid reflux remedy.

Vix clears helps you breathe, the spray stops the drip that can cause the cough and the heartburn/acid reflux stops the bile coming back up.

Vomit inducing coughs often go hand in hand with a form of gastroenteritis.

Have you been checked for this?

It's pretty awful, you have my full sympathy - get well soon

I feel your pain. I suffer from this sort of cough a couple of times a year usually and it drives me to tears, I have quite often sat on the sofa crying in the middle of the night where I am so exhausted and still can't sleep from coughing.

I tried vicks on my feet and sadly it did not work for me, but others swear by it!

I hope you get some much needed sleep soon x

I'm only sick cus I am heaving so much when I cough, I have a virus tbat has given me a chest and upper respiritory tract virul infection ( they say it's not bacterial ). I am also asthmatic and now taking steriod tablets aswell as my usual inhalers cus my asthma has been badly affected. I know the cough is for a reason (to get rid of the gunk) but I am desperate for a few hours sleep

Thank you

I have seen three different Doctos at my Doctors surgery about a cough which I had and have also had two X rays . However mine is only a minor cough on occasions and haa more or less gone away now .

Does the Doctor know the underlying cause of the cough? . Sometimes gases from the stomach can cause it . I was given a course of pills for my stomach .

Ouch I can really sympathise with you this sounds really awful, I had it so bad for around a month, remember going to the doctors a second time and getting told "it'll just take time" ! Have you tried green tea, with real slices of lemon in and honey? The lemon is very good for you and might make your cough a bit lighter, sorry I can't suggest any more than that...

I had a simple cold at the begining. Probably caught from work as i work with children and most of them have had a very bad croupy cough over recent weeks. As I am asthmatic it has affected my asthma hence the steroid tablets and is taking me longer to get over it. If i go docs again i guess they would send me for an xray and put me on a nebuliser for a while but all i really want is to get a few hours sleep and I would hope I would start to feel better

I know that kind of cough it's horrible, poor you x

All I can recommend cough wise is either Clovonia ( it's gross but works) & Night Nurse.

Have you tried propping your pillows up & angles and sleeping upright within the V.

Try steaming.

Fill a bowl with boiling water lean over the bowl and cover your head with a towel so you form a tent over the bowl and the steam can't escape.

This used to help my mum who had really bad asthma

Just be careful the bowl cannot spill, you don't want to scald yourself.

Steaming works but only at the time I do it and I can't sit steaming all the time lol

I have tried all cough medicines that I can take (asthmatics need to be careful about what cough medicines they take as some make them worse)

Night nurse is just a combined group of medicines all of which i have taken separatly.

I can't find anything to help so probably got to go back to docs tomorrow .... can't get thru on the phone to docs today

Just been downstairs to get a drink and struggled to get back up the stairs to bed cus I couldn't breathe well enough plus i was coughing constantly

thanks everyone

I swear by night nurse, but maybe not with the other drugs your taking

Also hot lemon and honey with a dash of wiskey... For a more intense lemon flavour, slice a couple of lemons and simmer in a little water for a couple of hours in a sauce pan, works wonders x

I am already taking all the meds that are in night nurse. I buy them individualy and as shops own brand rather than buying a brand name ... I am very much anti brand name if you can get the same drugs cheaper lol ... hasn't worked though anyway apart from the paracetemol helping a bit wuth the pain.

Drinking hot lemon with honey which is lovely but not helping anymore than a cup of tea

I had exactly the same type of thing in the summer, developed from a cough I caught from my son which developed into a horrendous chest infection. Nothing the GP gave me worked, including steroids and antibiotics. I was vomiting when coughing and coughing so hard I bruised my ribs. I couldn't walk up the stairs or talk without gasping for breath. Eventually I collapsed and was taken into hospital for a week for IV drips, anti bios, steroids, nebulisers etc etc. Then sent home with masses of pills for enforced bed rest. It took time but it was the only thing that sorted me out! Home remedies weren't doing anything. Sorry!

Sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds as if yours started the same as mine. I can see me ending up on a nebuliser pretty soon as just had a bath in order to be in a steamy atmosphere. It worked ok while in the bath although i was still coughing but not as much. As soon as i got out i went straight back to coughing as much as before plus struggling to breathe. Struggled to get upstairs to put clothes on, using my blue inhaler as if there's no tomorrow but still struggling to breathe ! Spraying deodorant hurt my skin !!!

Can't get thru to GP though !!!

Probably going to phone the healthline number in a bit !

I've got a cough that comes and goes, it's better now but when it's bad I use covonia bronchial cough medicine at night. It's rank but it's the only one that lets me get some sleep. Check with your GP though cause if they're giving you medication for it you should make sure it's okay to take both. It definitely works for me. Hope you feel better soon. X

Hi Diane X

Sorry to hear your unwell with this cough.

Your quite right over the counter cough syrups have to be taken carefully because of your asthma. Also too note that your asthma might be the cause of the coughing too not your cold. My advice would be if you have had the cough for more than two weeks or if it's getting worse you need to see a gp so he can listen to your chest for fluid retention or see if you have an infection. Also if you have a peak flow meter monitor your readings so he can compare them with your normal readings.

to help you sleep then the best way is to sit straight up at night with pillows supporting you (don't lie down as the mucus will trickle the back of your throat causing coughing) also don't have any windows open and have the central heating on around 21 degrees at night so it's warm and dry.

Hope it helps

I had a cough which started with a bad cold back in June. The cough was very dry and so violent I could hear neck muscles creak and I would nearly grey out. Had antibiotics, nose spray to dry the post nasal drip (which she thought was causing it) qbs chest xrays etc. Finally got to see an ENT specialist who stuck a camera down each nostril (which is as bad as it sounds). She's diagnosed 'laryngopharyngeal reflux' which essentially means my cough is being caused by my reflux being inflamed which then spreads to the throat, so actually not a throat /sinus issues but one of digestive reflux caused by spicy food, heartburn etc.

Might not be the issue in your case and I'm sure you'll Google it or suggest it to your doctor (which he'll no doubt appreciate) but thought I'd share my experience with y'all

Glad to know you have managed to get an urgent doc appointment. I have asthma and had a similar horrid cough a few weeks ago. Menthol crystals in boiling water helped me out. Try belly breathing whilst leaning over the steam. Stick your belly out and breath in steadily to get your inhalers and the menthol to the depth of your lungs . hope you feel better soon.

Turned out i have a bloody chest infection all along and not a virus as it "sounds wet" when i cough ! Shame the doc didnt notice that friday when i went as my cough was "wet" then and i did point that out !

It is also affecting my asthma so inhalers doubled plus nice lovely antibiotics

I have been going bed and staying upright and keeping heating on cus when it gets cold i cough even more ... if thats possible

Thank you

Drinking half a bottle of whiskey will just make my head pound even more, make me even more unsteady on my feet and make me need to pee every 5 mins lol

So there would be no sleep lol

Well I am STILL coughing (and heaving) now and STILL feeling bloody awful although i am possibly slightly less breathless but havn't had to go up the stairs much yet so not really tested that so far today. My ribs are soooo painful, my chest is very tight and my whole body hurts, even spraying deodorant hurts my skin !!

I have now taken 2 days worth of antibiotics so hopefully today they should start to work !!

However none of the cough medicines or remedies or vick have helped in anyway apart from the cough medicine that loosens the mucus making it easier to cough up (sorry for the grossness) so at least I'm no longer choking after half coughing up phlegm !

Painkillers help a little with pain and slightly lower my temp.

Having a steamy bath helps a little at the time but the effort in having a bath ruins any good effects. Putting my head over a bowl of hot steamy water does nothing at all.

I am fed up and feeling sorry for myself and just wish the doc had given me antibiotics last week rather than make me wait !!
