This might cause controversy........but not meant to!.
So for those who have chosen to change avatars to the French flag...why???.
Every one with a decent bone in there body feels for the Parisians right now! It's a terrible thing to have happened.
But I also feel for those 200+ Russians killed two weeks ago coming home from holiday...why did no one change avatars to the Russian flag to show sympathy to those too?.

Not sure, maybe because France is so close. It's only 20 miles away from me.
Also probably because facebook started offering people the chance to change profilr pics in support so people did, they didn't do it for Russia. |

I was shouting at the tv every time they showed the "poor tourists" who couldn't get home because of the situation in Sharm, but I've also changed my Facebook profile picture to the flag in support. I guess it has to start somewhere... |

My current Fb profile reads...
'Facebook asking you to change your pic to a Kenyan or Lebanese flag? Thought not.'
What has happened in Paris is beyond awful but it seems if tragedies don't happen in countries that aren't political or financial allies, they're largely ignored |

Call it cumulative shock from all the recent events....... and I guess because it was so close to home this time, you thought 'that could've easily been me or mine'.....and because producing it was a simple option that was offered on this occasion.
Nothing sinister or paritularly political. |

When the US allowed gay marriage, FB made it easy to show support by allowing the option to rainbow your avatar. That didn't happen when Britain made it legal. Had they, I'd have had a rainbow avatar then.
I could have made one myself for the UK but I didn't cause I'm lazy. When FB did it for me, I took advantage to support gay marriage worldwide.
It would be nice if there was a general anti-terrorism option, then the support could be shown worldwide for everyone who has been affected by this sort of atrocity. I would change my picture to show my support just like I did for the people of France. It's easy when it's available.
It also makes me think that I could/should be doing more to help change the way our world runs. |

" controversy everywhere ,to be honest I don't dwell on it ,its too late to do anything about any of it now you can't predict what these crackpots are going to do next ,my sympathy goes out to those directly affected and I hope the people trying to catch these mentally unstable people are successful |

"why not support the French with a French flag? "
Well why not supper the Russians killed in the plane crash too they were all innocent people as were the Parisians this weekend.
I've come of Facebook the bullshit on there over the past few days is pathetic in my opinion.
It's not just about Paris, Russians have died too in a act of terror and more Russians were killed than Parisians.
If people are willing to make such a statement like this then it should be for every nation.

'should'......I don't have to support anyone nor show any allegiance or concern or anything if I don't want to. My question though was 'why not support the French?' And replying that I 'should' support other terrorist affected countries doesn't really answer the question. |

I disagree - plenty of people have family or history or affinity associated with one country rather than another, or can simply be moved by one thing more than another for some reason.
If I choose to donate to Children in Need that is no reflection on the value of the NSPCC - someone else is just as free to donate to them. If I choose to wear a pink ribbon it does not mean I discriminate against sufferers of myeloma....etc, etc.
And in my opinion Facebook is mostly a reflection of the people you link yourself too. I am happy with what appears from my friends - who are in the UK, US and France mostly as it happens. |

Your just being argumentative to be honest!!
I was asking why no one felt showing a Russian flag was just as important as a French flag.
Let's face it as per usual most jump on the band wagon rather than see a bigger picture.

I don't think it's appropriate showing support by having any flag of a country suffering from an act of terrorism over a pic of a cock or fanny. It seems weird. |

If someone wants to change their avatar here or on FB, then that's fine by me. If they choose not to, that's fine by me too.
I haven't because the thought that the deaths of 132 people in Paris is more noticeable than other deaths makes me uncomfortable, but I won't chastise people for changing their user pics. However I have had to remove two friends from my FB friendslist for some pretty heinous posts. |

How have I chastised anyone I've asked a question that's all.
Why do some think the deaths in Paris more significant than those Russian people two weeks ago that they need to add a countries flag to an aviator.
Surely all those killed by terrorism deserve the same
Level as respect????

I agree with you in principle, OP.
But I think it is human nature (indeed, animal nature in general) to sympathize more with people who we perceive as part of our "group."
Given that Facebook is American-based it makes political sense that they will show more feeling for the French than the Russians. And given that Facebook is what makes this avatar easy to make....well, the end result is as you see it.
It is sad to me that it is the case, but I don't think it is even consciously done, for the most part.
That's just my opinion.

My avatar does not constitute any difference in respect. I was more shocked by the events in Paris certainly, they seemed more callous and barbaric somehow. |

It's out freedom of choice to support whatever cause we see fit to do so without being chastised or having to justify.
All acts of terrorism are barbaric but I suppose I could relate to the Paris incident more, like I could to 7/7 ~ I've visited the city a lot and love it there, took my son this time last year as well.
Maybe we've unfortunately come accustomed to airline atrocities and build that into our acceptable risk factor but who builds in a Friday night out into theirs, I for one don't........ |

I think the Russian tragedy wasn't as quickly identified as being a terrorist attack and the events of Friday happened in 8 separate locations over Paris and therefore was made more shocking and real.
Just my opinion of course. |

I'm not on face ache but it was broadcast that they activated their new feature for users in Paris. It allows people (when activated by facebook) to 'check in' & show they are safe. It's to help family members know that their loved ones are safe & well.
Often in times of panic the mobile network gets flooded so using wifi is a secondary contact method.
The French prime minister tweeted and used this new facebook thing.
The Russian airline was different, for a number of reasons. One Mobile devices were deactivated and passenger lists are kept.
Facebook reported this feature would be activated in areas were needed and for those people registered in those areas, living and tagged there within a time frame |

I suppose it was the fact that the people who was killed was out drinking in pubs. Eating in restaurants. At a concert that shocked more. Not saying it was worse than the plane getting blown up but just the reality and the fact that poeple just having a Friday night out can get gunned down shocked me more and brought home the fact that no one Is safe anymore |

Because many people watched the event sin Paris as they unfolded.
The plane crash it was (and still is to some extent) unclear what actually happened.
Weather it was just a crash or a bombing or something else.
