Woke up with awful pain in back and buttock. Just left with pain in buttock. Is it likely to be sciatica ?

If it's really bad, maybe go to A&E. Could be a trapped nerve or a disc problem and cause permanent damage, especially if there's any numbness from your buttocks downwards.

Definitely call 111 at least.

This is good advice

In my experience, sciatic pain runs down the leg as well as through the buttock (well mine does anyway).

However, like Soylent Green, results vary from person to person.

Give 111 a ring as per the posters above.

I have this at the moment and have been to GP and physio as a result. Is the pain down one side?

Mine certainly is sciatica.

Do you sit with your legs curled up on the sofa.

I had 9 weeks of painful physiotherapy because I had sat that way with a laptop on the arm of the sofa.

My pelvis had become misaligned. They say it is one of the worst offender postions to sit in

Sciatic pain runs down the full leg.

If it is just the thighs it might be a different nerve or problem.

The thing to do is not ignore it. See your GP to make sure it is nothing serious. And to make sure it doesn't get any worse.

Don't want to scare you but a friend of mine had this and eventually they discovered a tumour on her spine crushing the spinal cord.

She made me promise to have my back/leg pains checked and I have just been diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis I'd been ignoring it for years. Wish I hadn't now

It's an awful feeling, my pain/numbness runs from my buttock right down the back of my left leg.

when it's numb feels like walking with a "wood" leg. Lol

i have exactly this...been palmed off with pointless physio for 18 months, despite the consultant telling me'im obliged to send you for physio but i can tell you it will have no long term effect'...now im waiting for a spinal fusion op...get it checked and ask for an mri if it persists longer than a few weeks..

st andrews

Mine started with pins and needles in my right leg for a few days, then it started to hurt, from the bottom of my back right to my toes. By the end of the week I couldn't stand for more than 2 mins at a time.

The doctor gave me tramadol, which did absolutely nothing. A few weeks later I started physio and was told to get amitryptaline or gabapentin instead. That, combined with the physio, helped immensely. From start to finish it lasted about 8/9 weeks, had the pins and needles the entire time.

I've not had any problems since but I know what to try if it starts up again.

Not an experience I wish on anyone
