Help from any technical people. Had an issue with my laptop last night where start menu wasn't working so rebooted and windows did an update. Now when it boots up and gets to the desktop my screen is blank apart from the cursor. Any help? |

What's your operating system ?
My first course of action would be to just leave it for ages to see if it actually loads (an hour should do). If it still doesn't load, then I'd try doing a system restore.

"I've been told windows 10 not good so havnt taken the free update "
I did it hated it and rolled back to windows 7!!
OP system restore to a couple of days ago is probably your only option. Boot into safe mode and choose restore to an earlier time. Assuming you can still do that with win 10 |

This... The program itself is a spying virus, the problems arise because are already installed antivirus programs cant handle the system override that win 10 performs.. It won't work correctly until the antivirus manufacturers are forced to change their products to allow Windows to hack your system.. It won't be long. |

Every keystroke you type, every site you visit, how long you where there, who you interacted with, what you said to each other and what data you used.. It has its own AI that looks up things you may be interested in (while you're offline) based on sites you've previously visited, then flagging and reporting your account for further inspection from security forces if it deems these sites inappropriate.. And these are only a few of the known issues regarding this.. As for the unknown...well ? |

And everything is fully encrypted before being sent to a server.
Most of the information is used for debugging and the guys and ladies who do the debugging don't have proper access to what you do where and when you do it.
I don't do anything on my PC of tablet that worries me and if the information that Microsoft receive from my PC helps make it better then I welcome it.
The rest is just aload of paranoia. |

It also stops you using any programmes it deems as pirated. In my experience that included a load of legit shareware that it claimed were pirated. Total rubbish! |

There are no guys and ladies checking anything,it's all controlled by preset algorithms, all brought in to affect due to the american patriot act to search for domestic terrorists.. As for your not doing anything wrong so nothing to hide stance, you are aware this was first attributed to Joseph Goebbels, head of the Nazis secret police.. Each to their own as to what info you gave to them but one should always remember "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not after you".. |

It's been great for me.
They issued the major update of it this week, which then filters out to all users. You have until the end of July to take advantage of the free upgrades from 7 or 8 to 10. Afterwards it's chargeable for those who don't. |

Really, well considering Microsoft and now yourself seem to be the only ones who think different then you must be right obviously.. Try typing Windows 10 spying into you're wee browser and then take a lucky dip from the hundreds of thousands of sites and experts that disagree with you.. |

Well Duh, if you look for a negative reference you are bound to find it.
The truth is that Microsoft, like almost every other software developer, is monitoring certain data and analysing this data to make "your" copy of their software more personal to "you". How else do you think that Siri knows where you live or that you can "Ask Google!" when your wedding anniversary is. These personalised serviced are not the result of some form of black magic, they are just down to your browsing habits being analysed and your stored information being cross referenced. People actually want these services, and if you don't want that.... just turn it off.
The idea that we are being spied on is just comical. Just imagine the number of people that you would need to employ to monitor the 120 million copies of Windows 10 which have already been installed... That would certainly sort out the worlds unemployment problems.
Logging every keystroke , it's just pure fantasy, if you type a document into your chosen word processing program, the only people who will see this document is you, until you send it to someone else, then they will see it too...
No, the truth is that a number of very clever bits of software are used to analyse the way that you use your computer and improve the way it works for you.

So american and their NSA can tap every phone, intercept every text and email sent already but they can't possible keep track of a couple of computer programs, just ask Edward Snowdon what they collect and what they do with it but hey,it's ok cause if I change the settings and ask it not to spy on me then it won't, gosh, isn't that nice of it.. "Comical" certainly describes some people's naivety but as already stated, to each his own as to how much info you want to give them.. |

There's a massive difference between "can do" and "do - do". Surveillance is targeted at specific people, these people do not just read every e-mail and listen to every phone call and hope that they get lucky |

Also, if you read the pages on the internet that "Talk up" the data collection that implemented by Windows 10, you will see that it's generally dating back to 2010 and relates specifically to the "Technical Preview" version of Win 10, which did (rather obviously) need to analyse considerably more data to allow the developers to fine-tune their code and create the best Release Candidate (final version)they possibly could... This was well documented in the install notes and you had to accept these conditions when you installed it. |

True, windows 10 default settings record and upload everything you do to microsoft...
Until you turn it off. There are 2 ways to do this, both easy to do and take less than minute each. Of course if you are like me you will do both...
Takes about 2 minutes
As for staying with win 7 or 8 remember you only have another few months before microsoft stop supporting them and if you have not availed yourself of the free win 10 upgrade by then it will cost you about £110 to keep your PC working because I for 1 will bet that like with win 98 the last update they will send will turn parts of your OS off and it will never run right again. |

I'm not gonna claim this article is definitive and it dates from the start of the year but I found in only 30 seconds but it sums up the situation as it is.
The end of active support doesn't mean the end of the important stuff like patches and fixs etc.
Anything terminal and you can just re-install as the last resort anyway.
I like the idea of Win 10 but I'm not an early adopter historically and do like a bit of a bedding in period before I make the jump as I surely will. |

Can't paste the link I was intending to on here but there's plenty of articles about the the continuing situation with win7 and 8 if you Google "windows 7 support ending". |

"So a month or two before they stop support turn off updates and it carries on running smoothly for years "
Unfortunately it did not work that way last time and I doubt it will this time.
Last time they sent the switch off codes long before they announced that they were stopping supporting widows 98 and by the time I found out the damage was done...
I expect that all those running win 7 or 8 already have the switch off codes embedded in their OS (I do not know this, just guessing atm). |
