There is a flurry of people defending utterly ridiculous comments by saying that it is their opinion as if that means they can say whatever unjustifiable nonsense they want without being pulled up for it.

I think this quote from Prof. Brian Cox is very appropriate:

"The problem with today’s world is that everyone believes they have the right to express their opinion AND have others listen to it.

The correct statement of individual rights is that everyone has the right to an opinion, but crucially, that opinion can be roundly ignored and even made fun of, particularly if it is demonstrably nonsense!"

That obviously goes for my opinions as well as yours. But lets try to remember that if your opinion is utter shite and poorly considered then you are probably going to be criticised.

O is for Opinion

We're all entitled to one

Readers just have to consider that often :

B is for Bollocks

D is for Delusion

and

M is for Misinformed

Who is to judge whose opinion is right and whose is wrong?

The trouble with opinions is that they are mostly subjective.

On any particular issue there will be a spectrum of _iews, some at one end of the extremes, some at the other end of the extreme.

As with most things the truth resides somewhere in the middle. Things are *rarely* black and white

We all are.

How on earth do we ever progress as a civilisation if we cannot judge opinions on their merits?

Discussion and debate relies on people analyzing opinions and providing comment or judgement on them. When it is done property and people don't behave like cretins, they listen to those comments and judgements and if there is anything which is fair or reasonable in those further statements then a reasonable person who did not have a preconcieved motive would ammend their opinions based on these new ideas and comments.

Otherwise we should never ever learn anything.

If what they are saying is better, more thought through and less reactionary then they are better.

You/we get to decide. But we trust you to make a sound judgement on this and not just belligerently bash on with your original stance if the only reason you are doing so is because it is easier than challenging your currently held beliefs.

If people post on the forums they are openly inviting others opinions. But ofcourse, no matter how forcibly someone else expresses their _iew, others are not required to agree, or even take it into account....

Howver, it has been said that the test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposing ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. That was just his opinion though obviously

Brighton - even Hove!

Opinions can't be wrong. People can disagree or agree. It how we do that which shows people what sort of people we are.

That's incorrect. Opinions can be wrong. We routinely dress opinions up as fact and that means they are often wrong.

Whilst a genuine opinion is neither right nor wrong, it can be utter nonsense and that is as bad as being wrong.
