I think everyone should retake their test every ten years
There's probably a lot of bad habits that I've picked up along the way, and changes in the highway code |

To be fair, I personally think this is a good idea I only say this because my father in law is 74 and while he is 'fit and healthy' his mind is starting to go at times and it's like your on a roller coaster!! For all mankind he should retake his test!! |

Maybe not a full test but perhaps a medical and an assessment. My friend was hit by an old man mounting the pavement who was unable to control his car and too frail to help with the subsequent incident. |

It's a great idea for a re-test every 10 years, not necessarily to the same criteria as the L-test
But it'd be political suicide for any party to even suggest they'd introduce it, alienating the vast majority of their electoral support |

As I drive a large motorhome I have a medical every 3 years now. Not a problem except for DVLA who mess about, they can't cope! Surely real problem is younger drivers, they can't even park and many assume speed limits only apply to those over 30. |

"bbc news this morning someone pushing for people 70 or over to retake driving test and medical test "
Did they provide statistical evidence showing 70's and older are involved in more accidents than other age groups,,, |

I think it's ageist and got asked to sign the petition but didn't.
I think it's just an excuse to push up the cost of something somewhere to make more money, seems to be the reason for everything these days. |

I think that's the best idea however...
I think there's a very large number of drivers that would fail, especially those over 70 |

"Why only those over 70? Why not ask every driver to retake the driving test every ten years?
Surely that would make our roads safer than just retesting the elderly. "

Medical and an eye test every couple of years , I drive for a living and have to do this every 5 years , it's s good idea because you might also find something you would never find without a medical |

I think anyone on medication should have a temporary license suspension too. A driver who was on meds for a sleeping disorder and told by his doctor not to drive decided to go early morning fishing and drove into a cyclist killing him instantly!
Leaving a wife and months old baby!
Why can't doctors issue a suspension along with the prescription!

I thought the insurance companies had statistics showing under 30, particularly male, were worst risk. Reflected in the premiums

There's plenty of over the counter stuff that is just as bad. People should have the sense to read the instructions and do what they're told.
I'm all for some sort of five or ten-yearly test for everyone. It's not just the over 70s who are a danger to everyone. |

Think tests should be on a layer system.. Between 17 and 21 limited hours of driving say between 7 and 7 . would cut down on a fair few accidents im sure. Then a test on motorway driving and parking reversing before getting a full licence.
after 21 a test every ten years unless there is an accident or offense committed. where some sort of course should be available like the speeding course.
I dont think it fair to pick only on the old I would be happy to be retested when I reach 70 though I dont think any age can be picked out as being worse than another.. Mothers dropping kids off at school are dreadful offenders. Straddling the pavement stopping or pulling off without indication, their kids getting out roadside into traffic.. its a nightmare daily . |

A full on re-test with a pass or fail would alienate many.
However, prior to renewing a licence I think a driving familiarisation course could be useful.
A period in the classroom and a practical assessment as opposed to a test. |
