Things just are not what they used to be. Apart from everyone who posts on here, who seem to spend their entire existences helping folks and getting little else done, everyone is dreadful and treats everyone else like dirt.

It just is not how it used to be.

I remember when you could not walk down the street without kindly old men giving you sweetie and asking you home for dinner.

It used to be that pregnant women were carried aloft on the shoulders of passing youths to save them walking.

Back in the day the sun was brighter and the birds sang louder.

Why can we not just go back to the these days which I have made up so fondly?

Philanthropists and Samaritans.

Except towards other forumites who have the audacity to voice an unorthodox opinion, of course.

And any man who needs help with his profile.

And people who like bareback. Or believe in squirting, or the Tooth Fairy, to a lesser degree.

And people who either misspell things, or insist on prefect spelling.

Let's not forget the evil people who use phrases like, 'real women', 'BBW' and 'cougar'.

But it was a kind and good riot where the locals would have a good bit of rough and tumble with the old bill then they would all go down the pub and support Bristol Rovers.

Not like nowadays when there are young people everywhere and they do things differently to how I would do things if it was not for the fact I was sitting still doing exactly the same as them.

Too much "health & safety" etc.

And the youth now probably spend most of there time playing computer games/sitting on there arses not doing much instead of going out.

Well the days of being told to "respect your elders" is well long gone. Kids know they have "rights" etc.

So no smacking kids (never done me any harm, if I got smacked I KNEW I had done something wring and wouldn't do it again.

No it's not. I'm talking from experience. I'm not talking about all children or teenagers but they don't think twice about having a play fight sat next to me on a bus, back pack squashed into my arm and lap and banging into me. The girl was shouting at the boy she was strangling, with no consideration for me sitting next to him. That's quite a common occurrence for me now. There are still some lovely children around but sheer numbers means we see more rude behaviour.

No one is saying that today's youth are angels. But they are no better or worse than previously.

Kids in my day were brats, in my parent's day they were brats. The issue is that adults have stopped reacting to it properly.

I was a very well behaved child,I did respect my elders and I was in bed much earlier than 9 and so were my children. And the same for my siblings and their children, all except for one,who was a terrible teenager. We hung around in gangs and walked the streets,we were a bit loud at times but we moved out of the way if someone walked past and gave up our seats for the elderly. A lot of teenagers don't seem to have any spacial awareness or awareness of who is around them. It's like they zone out to the world when they are in a large group of friends. I watched my 12 year old granddaughter running around like a headless chicken, screaming her heart out, outside the shops a few mornings ago. She was part of a group of girls baiting the boys. I was a bit disappointed in her to be honest, but I'm a stick in the mud.

I absolutely love how a parody post about how it wasn't like Nigel Farage says it used to be has turned into another cliched p_edictable gripe about the youth of today.

Are people totally incapable of looking at themselves honestly and realising that what they remember they were is only a sugar coated version of what they choose to remember.

Some of the posts here are actually parodies of the usual post but some are earnest and are utterly more ridiculous than even the parodies.

Should we consider worrying less about how awful everyone else is and start just enjoying the fact we live in a wonderful country in the richest safest times in human history?

Well said OP. All the evidence is that crime is actually on a significant downward trend and has been since the middle of last century. We are far more psychologically aware when bringing up children, and if that means they are both seen and heard more these days I'm all for it!

Believe me,trying to negotiate hoards of teenagers day in day out is far from a dream. If you see a news item saying woman loses her head and goes mental at a bus stop,it'll be me. I don't dislike teenagers,I do see a lot of disrespectful behaviour now. It's not just me,lots of people complain about them. Local schools now send a teacher to the nearest bus stops after school,to board them onto the buses. You'll notice a transport theme here, where they seem to be less well behaved. Two boys were thrown off recently and one driver stopped the bus and went upstairs to threaten to send others off. Every single day there are squabbles at the bus stops because teenagers are pushing and jostling everyone. I've started to hold them back and tell them the old people are getting on first. That shouldn't have to be said or done.

Being attacked by someone on the street is more likely now than 45 years ago when I was a teenager. My friend's son died after being stabbed,my grandson has been attacked twice this year, the second time has left a scar on his face, and he had his legs taken down by a base ball bat ,on his way home from school, all teenagers doing the attacking.

I never saw that once. We are talking about our own experiences,my experiences were different to yours, which is why I think teenagers are worse now. I'm not ignoring things that happened,I'm comparing my experiences back then to them now. I knew some very bad people back then but they had respect for other people out in public. They didn't only behave when their parents were around to beat them. My husband and his brothers were bastards but they had respect and common courtesy. Although it did kick off in the pub a few times. No pubs left for it to kick off in. They're all sat at home playing CoD and having virtual arguments.

Although not a fan of kids, it is wrong to put all the countries wrongs on their shoulders.

This country is not what it was because politeness seems to be a list art.

People who walk in front of you while you're looking at something and can't be bothe_ed to say excuse me, people who let their kids scream and scream in shops, people who can't walk home from the boozer at 2am and not shout obscenities all the way, and usually deposit broken glass and other crap all over other people's area. Or boy racers racing through built up areas at 2 and 3 am.

Yes, all this probably happened before, but never to the extent it does now, in my 'umble opinion.

Phew.. I feel better for that!

Ahh the good ol' days

When 'safe sex' was giving someone else's name......

Getting caught speeding meant they actually had to catch you, none of these new fangled cameras and video..........

"When the bread boy delive_ed?

My dads first job was a bread boy lol"

We had an egg boy. Now we have an illegal substances boy. He'll deliver but not if you tick. I don't use him,in case you were thinking.

"Ahhhhhhhhhhhh nostalgia. It's not what it used to be.

I know, my parent's 'good old days' seemed so much better..

Things were even better and cheaper and people were nicer than my good old days it seems according to the stories.

Things weren't cheaper with decimalisation. I remember my mum saying how their wages seemed to halve overnight.

"The forumites are Latter Day Saints, naturally.

Anyone new, uninitiated, unsure of the format, and most importantly, anyone who dares to disagree with Dorian Gray.

Other than the above, then yes, a world populated by forumites would, indeed be a utopian nirvana......

"

Cleo, you amaze me.

Such a way with words.

The planet has undergone 5 'mass extinction' events in the last half billion years or so (and indeed, when you think about what humans are doing to Earth, this is arguably a 6th... but I digress)...

The Earth will be fine - give it a few 10s of millions of years and it will reset, reconfigure.

What you're talking about is:-

Is *humanity* fucked?

"Being attacked by someone on the street is more likely now than 45 years ago when I was a teenager. My friend's son died after being stabbed,my grandson has been attacked twice this year, the second time has left a scar on his face, and he had his legs taken down by a base ball bat ,on his way home from school, all teenagers doing the attacking. "

I seem to read articles about this on almost a daily basis.

"Things just are not what they used to be.

"

world's always been fucked, best you can do is try to make a positive environment around you're family and those you meet around in everyday life to make it a bit better and do you're own small part in doing so..

big picture it's always going to be screwed one way or the other there is nothing to be done about it.

That means nothing other than you read articles about it regularly.

Just because you never heard of it before does not mean it was less common. Perhaps it means the opposite. Nowadays it is sufficiently rare as to warrant a press article whereas before it was so common as to pass without any real comment.

All you have done here is provide unaccountable circumstantial opinions which serve to prove nothing other the fact that you see things differently now to 30 years ago.

Don't you think that is more likely to be a change in you over the years as much as anything else?

Or a case it's so common now that the newspapers don't think it deserves a mention unless nothing else happened that day,or it was of national interest, like in Stephen Lawrence's case.My friend's son's murder only made the local paper. A relative's neighbour made the national paper and mainstream tv when he was stabbed and killed in London. Why some get reported on and some don't depends on whether people will be interested in reading.

Sounds like you may be a jinx?

But seriously, there are many contradictions here. One minute all you read is about death and utilisation and the next the press never cover it.

I don't understand how both are possible.

Don't you see that there is a massive difference between the amount of badness in the world and the proportion of news which is bad?

Oh cheers for that. I didn't say I never read about it,you did but I do see your point. I was talking about my experiences now and when I was a teenager. Knives are carried more frequently now. I've just been reading some articles about knife crime in London actually. The figures,if accurate are astonishing.

I would argue with the "more" part. Frequently, yes, too frequently, yes. But more frequently? We just don't know.

I think the under 40s generation have certainly fucked up the planet more than the over 40s generation...

More because they could than through choice perse.

The under 20s get the environment idea more because they've got 60 years left whereas people over 40 tend to think fuck it I'll stick with my over priced house and my four holidays a year!
