Get a nice rectangular stole in a contrasting colour. Something festive? Lacy? Maybe with a little shimmer?
Drape it artfully around your shoulders and tie it in with another accessory, shoes, or bag, or even a statement necklace, in the same shade.
That will draw the eye, and if it coordinates with something else, it'll seem like an entire ensemble.
Complete new look. It's all in the styling.

"It's just a black dress. Nothing special but apparently it suited me "
In that case go for it. Different accessories, different colours and lush shoes. You can totally reinvent it and still look fabulous in something that suits you.
(Depending on the neckline one of those collar/bib necklaces would change it up in a heartbeat) |

"To wear the same thing I wore last year to my work Christmas do,this year?"
Go for it..
And of anyone says you wore it last year, just respond by saying "yes, but I wore underwear last year.."
That'll shut their gob |

I would wear what i wanted to and not bother what anyone else thinks as it's not a life or death thing anyway lol.
Mind you i don't worry what others think about me anyway !
I never go to my work Christmas do nor my hubbys work Christmas do as i spend enough time with them when I'm paid to which is enough for me to bear ... so it's not a problem i have |
