okay... what do you make of the sam burgess debacle???
Glad he is going back to league... would have liked to seen him in super league, but south sydney isn't a bad return....
i think the RFU have royaly screwed this up.... if at club level bath decided to play him as a flanker.... but england management decide he is an inside centre... i'd trust the people who see him day in day out....
he has been seen as the scapegoat... people forget in the wales game england were leading who he came off the pitch... and the australian game was long lost before he got on the pitch......
the rfu deen replacing from the director of personnel downwards.... but i am glad the RFL now have him back for the 4 nations... and that possible lions ashes test series they have been talking about for ages.... |

good ball carrier, not bright enough to play union at top level am afraid. I agree he was totally let down by England management and should no way have been selected until he had more premiership experience i.e. at least another season |

The guy came to Union at least a year too late for this world cup, possibly two. He needed a season to find his best position, and then at least another one learning how to play at the highest level in that position. Instead he got half a season being swapped around by Bath, and then he was in the England squad at centre.
He is a class act, he obviously has the skill set to be a good centre, and equally could have made a decent back row. But, and this is the big but, would he be better than any of the other players England have available? For me that is unlikely - there are better players who are far more experienced in Union.
Also, the problem with England is that they are trying to play a hybrid union/league thing, which is why Burgess was so attractive. Unfortunately, the best sides in the world ain't doing that. When you look at what the back row or centre combo's were doing for NZ and Aus it was light years away from what England were attempting. Burgess did very well defensively, especially against Wales, but he didn't have the Union nous in attack.
Lastly - completely agree, he was made the scapegoat, and the problems for England ran far deeper than Burgess.

Burgess I think has given up too soon - he tried something then sacked it off when it got too hard.
However, he was massively let down by the RFU. He should never have been put into the World Cup squad, he wasn't ready. He had/s it in him to be an excellent player, but he was never given a chance to learn and grow before he was chucked into the pressure cooker of the World Cup.
The fault lies not with Burgess himself, but with the coaching squad who selected him ahead of Burrell, with the RFU who decided to refuse selection to players based overseas, with the press and fans who decided to throw him under a bus.
Disappointed for him that he's now broken contract with Bath and given up before he really gave it a chance, though.

He is an international player, no doubt in my mind about that but to bring him in so late before a world cup is miss management ! He should have played in the 6 nations. Just look at Sonny Bill for New Zealand He has been switching codes for a while but been given time to do so. |

In all honesty, I hated him playing for England. He'd only been playing union for a few mnths, admitted he didn't know what he was doing, and was swapped around to much. And it showed as soon as he got on the pitch, it was like giving a 5yr 4 packs of smarties and putting him in a ballpit but if RFU had left him alone, bath would have got him sorted and he would be heading towards being a great union player. And with how he's been treated, I'm not surprised he's gone back. I just hope the league fans treat him better |

Not bright enough. Really.
Asking a guy to come play one position. For club and another for country, where the positions are so far apart and still do reasonably well seems a Sharp lad to me. The one who isn't bright is Mr Lancaster. .. Move a man ( Farnell) who is controlling a game to centre and bring ford on is insane.
if ud let him learn 1 position ud have seen his superior skill level
, Ie off loads, carries and defense. |

My opinion is that the whole sorry saga has been handled really poorly....right from the moment Sam decided to switch codes last year till now. The attempt at fast tracking him into international football was farcical and loaded with huge pressure on the lad to succeed. The indecision over what his correct position was, a joke. With time and the correct coaching, I'm certain he'd have gone on to be a fantastic addition to the 15 man game. As it is, I hope his refund to league is a success and that he regains his former glories playing the game he loves. |

He was sold a dream by Farrell in the four nations last year, this dream was not ever possible given the time scale they were looking at, when even the union players come out in defence of him you know the rfu have royally fucked up,
They tried to repeat the Robinson success story with Burgess but Robinson was eased in to the game slowly and Lancaster is no Woodward, glad he is back where he belongs, shame he didn't pick Leeds but still back in rl and thats what matters
Has for the gb series hopefully this 3 test series against New Zealand will show there is still call for rugby league test matches, but its going to be 2018 at the earliest I'd love to'see a gb tour of oz |

I was hoping he'd pick Leeds too. As a rhinos fan, would have loved to see him in the blue n gold.
Alas, his heart is in Sydney, along with his family and a club that loves him. |

Think Leeds were close they offered him 679 thousand a year so weren't a million miles out
I think the fact he is marrying an Aussie in Australia before the year is out night have had a massive say in it |
