None of my pets have been scared of them. A cat of mine used to sit at the window watching the neighbours ones.

I love them too, they make children happy. The loud ones are scary though I must admit. They should be banned

I haven't noticed a single rant on here?

I have four pets and have no problem with them on bonfire night or New Years- I can plan for that (and do).

Its the fact that it goes on for weeks sometimes either side that makes me fraustrated for my animals because I have to keep them in so much x

My dog hates them so consequently I have the tele on loud, the washing machine on, all the lights on and a radio on in the kitchen.

I don't rant about fireworks on, or around bonfire night, but if they are let off for 2 weeks leading up to, and following? Yep, gonna rant about that

Its my Facebook news feed that is full of the rants.. sorry for the confusion.

Just find it slightly odd that animals are influencing how the human race acts. Bonfire night is a tradition and just a bit of fun (yes there are some majorly stupid adults out there who ruin it)..

Very- some by not ensuring their pets welfare, and some just plain cruel people.

There was a thread where some people were giving advice on how to help pets with fireworks.

Not seen anyone ranting, but then if pets offend that much I guess any mention of them could seem like a rant

Well I have to admit, my cat his sitting here scared to death. TV up so loud I'm waiting on the neighbours to complain.

Like others have said I can put up with them for 1 night, but when it goes on and on and on it does piss me off!

Plus he cant get a reprieve as we are city centre so it doesn't matter if he is in the living room with me or the bedroom which is in back, as the noise is coming from everywhere!

I absolutely LOVE fireworks!!

I'm thinking about going back to the US for the Fourth of July next year. We do them sooooooo much better.

And my dogs don't mind them either way.

Just got back from enjoying the bonfire and fireworks and some time at the pub. I wish it was Friday!!

My dogs not bothered but my son was terrified as a toddler.

I expect them tonight, fri and Saturday but all this week has been a nightmare and they will be going on for the next few.

Pacifying animals and children is ok for a few nights but 2 weeks of if is not fair on anyone

Come and sit with my dog who hasn't stopped shaking since I stepped in from work.

He refuses to go out / walk and is breathing so heavily due to stress and is dripping saliva everywhere.

It's now 10pm and if anything they seem to be getting louder if anything.

Blinds shut, windows shut, lay on bed with him, poor bugger.

Not a rant, just a statement of why they aren't for everyones enjoyment.

Would you enjoy them if your little un was scared to death of them and you saw her in such a state ?

Silly post from the OP I gotta say.

havnt seen one thread ranting about fireworks.

And even if their was...they have good reason as its no longer "one night of the year" they have been going off almost a week or more now, not only that its mid week and kids have school, people have work tomorrow snd its now past 10 o'clock and they are still going off left right and centre.

Selfish human beings that is all we are....dont give a flying fuck about the animals we share the world with....just as long as we get our jollys.

fuck humans give me animals any day.

People who think it's ok to hurt an innocent animal shouldn't be allowed to purchase fireworks or other weapons. The horses also got glassed and cut. There should be greater restrictions on people wanting to purchase those such items.

I'd like to be pointed in the direction of the threads where people have been moaning about them. If it was just on Facebook then maybe the thread would of been better on Facebook.

My cats are not bothered although when I had the one as a kitten she had a sedative.

I have no idea where the venom on this thread towards pet owners comes from.

I fucking hate fireworks, big displays are fine and should be bought with a per it.

The big display here is tomorrow its £3.50 per person so less than £15 for a fa ily of four plus the atmosphere not going to get many fireworks at home for that.

Why do I hate fireworks? Because someone through a rocket and God knows how but my son was in my ex husbands arms and it went between the both of them and missed them.

Let's hope your daughter doesn't grow up scared of anything op

I know what you mean bit it's not he person not the weapon used...

If you want to blind a horse then a lack of fireworks won't stop you

What if they'd used petrol and a match? Massively dangerous and freely available and probably used in many more acts of vandalism than fireworks?

Peroxide maybe?

Or one of the many lovely things you can find under your sink, mix up and get chlorine gas say? Or makeshift napalm...would we then ban those things?

and just what exactly is wrong with being selfish at times?

i chose not to have a pet,, i chose to enjoy fireworks..

doesnt make me some evil bitch in life just because my facebook newsfeed was full of negativity for an event that friends and familys of mine enjoy.

i understand SOME animals may not like bangs.. but its inevitable that at this time of the year there will be loud noises.

i DO NOT condone idiots who exploit and misuse fireworks to create harm and use fireworks for purposes to scare/mame/harm others..

But as a person.. i expressed an opinion that people get pets and they know that Nov 5th is potentially a stressful time for animals.. owners rant and rave that its a stressful time of year and fireworks should be banned,, and i chose the counter rant that i love them.

freedom of speech. wonderful thing

Guide and help type dogs tend to be brilliant for fireworks...they tend to be trained for loud noises/crowds and high stress situations.

Please crawl back under the rock you came out of. I don't care if I get a ban for saying so. This thread was about fireworks not other weapons. I don't like them I think they should be banned. Because of people being able to get hold of them I have to sedate my dog from the middle of October til after new year. Stick to organised events then I would atleast know when they were happening. Ok everyone has a right to speak how they want it's an open forum but you are being overly difficult.

People who think it's ok to hurt an innocent animal shouldn't be allowed to purchase fireworks or other weapons. The horses also got glassed and cut. There should be greater restrictions on people wanting to purchase those such items.

I think sometimes non-pet owners fail to understand that pet owners really love and care about their pets and want to protect them. The same as people do with their children. So if there's something that upsets their pet, then they will probably get a bit irked about it and want to rant as well as preferring it didn't happen.

I posted a thread a couple of weeks back titled "Fucking fireworks". If that was a rant, so be it. It sounds like Beirut here. Have been decamped in the front room with the tv up loud while it sounds like a scene from Apocalypse Now outside. It's been like this every night for two weeks now. Think that is just too much. I can't imagine how stressed local wildlife are given how stressed domestic animals get. But no one ever mentions them. Or the hedgehogs that get incinerated in bonfires.

Still, who cares, eh?

I heard fireworks back in June... My only conclusion is that bingley was celebrating my arrival to the area

Although saying that, I've not really heard any this past week from indoors.

Not a massive fan of fireworks tbh. They're pretty and all but the loud bangs wind me up a bit. Apparently when I was a baby I wet myself every time a firework went off... so perhaps that's why I don't like them xD

I'm not sure why they are still available to buy in just about every shop. We live in a society where the government feels it is necessary to spy on our internet activity in case we're all terrorists but anyone can go and buy explosives that also light up in pretty colours.

James I mercilessly persecuted the Catholics. They retaliated by forming a plot to kill him (along with the MPs of the day). Of course, when the plot was discovered, Guy Fawkes and company were executed in the most horrible manners.

So that's what people are celebrating: I can see why those at the top celebrate that - but why the rest of us?

Isn't a Catherine wheel the representation of how the Catholic martyr Catherine was crucified and set on fire? Will have to google it.

Lovely things to celebrate every year

And how long have we had to put up with a fortnight's worth of fireworks rather than one night? That is quite a modern thing.

Also it is a source of wonder that you can buy explosive material in the shops yet not take 125ml of aftershave/perfume on a plane. Doesn't make sense to me

this

Think people who enjoy fireworks are, deep down, uncomfortable with the knowledge that their enjoyment causes so much distress so they resort to deflecting and apportioning blame elsewhere.

The sad part is that most pet owners wouldn't mind if it were just one night. But it isn't. It goes on night after night after night...

Doubtless we will be given more to endure tonight - though why fans haven't had their fill by now, I don't know. You've seen one firework display, you've seen them all, in my opinion.

Sad that so many firework fans can't be content with on one night at an organised displays. Why is that? Do they like knowing they are causing animals lots of stress - not to mention how many kids end up injured, maimed and even killed by the damned things? Mystery to me

I'm a pet owner and I love fireworks. If ever I get married I'm having them regardless of when in the year that falls.

My cats aren't fussed by them to be fair. They just get on with whatever it is they are doing.

I have seen dogs react badly to fireworks but then on the most part they have owners who over indulge them and are clearly anxious about the situation before it arises. Most pets look to their owner as the lead animal so if you are anxious they will be anxious.

That's a piss poor argument.

Mystery to me "

Many kids nd adults and beloved pets get maimed and/or killed by cars....will you be walking everywhere from now on or do you like knowing how much anguish and hurt you could cause behind the wheel? Such a ridiculous statement to make.

While I'm not that big a fan of fireworks, definitely agree that pet owners should get over it!

Only if people are idiots about it. Alcohol for example, is fine so long as it's not abused. Some people have said that the fireworks go on for months. This simply isn't true. You might get say about a week and it does die down. To assume that people condone children being mutilated is ridiculous

"Ok..well if we didn't breed the pets to be such softies they'd be able to cope. Either side of the argument, it's a man made problem"

That's an even worse argument, seriously.

And I absolutely love fireworks. But there were some going off round me at 3am last night so I think I'm entitled to be a bit pissed off about them. Yes it's man made in that people are absolute cunts to each other and the rest of the beings on the earth, as demonstrated by this thread tbh. But to suggest it's because it hasn't been 'bred' out of the animals we keep as pets is a crock of shit. Any species that had the ability to be frightened by unusual loud bangs bred out of it wouldn't be around for long. Ditto small children. I kind of want children and pets to be averse to the noise of explosions.

You are being ridiculous.

Why is one night not enough? Why not only have organised events? Are you happy that kids can - and will - get injured? The numbers would be minimal if kept to public displays but people like you don't seem to want that. Why??

i broke my arm when i was a kid falling out of a tree....shall we ban all trees?

My sister cut her chin open riding a bike, shall we ban bikes?

yuo cannot ban everything that has the potential to hurt people (or kids as that seems to be all you are interested in), all you can do is reduce the risk by being safe and teaching them how to be safe.

I am calm around my dog. Fireworks don't freak me out, just her. I've not had this problem with previous dogs but she is a rescue dog so who knows why she gets so freaked? All the other dog owners I know have had the same experience. Indeed I nearly lost her last year when people let off fireworks early one evening and she ran off - and it wasn't 5th November

Still, you enjoy them. That's all that matters. Nothing else matters. Enjoy the hundredweight of them going off tonight. I'm sure you will be pleased to see them. It's only a fortnight like this every year, after all

I don't over indulge my pet. If I did that I would have a dog I couldn't control. My dog is a rescue dog was picked up by the dog warden the week after new year. She was about 6 months old at the time and had probably been out roaming for a few weeks as she was very underweight. Because of this she hates loud bangs. Someone could slam a car door outside and it sets her off. I have been through 3 dog behaviourists to try and sort out all the issues she has. It's not her fault it's partly mine when I split from my X he said he was going to keep her but then dumped her back at the RSPCA. I got her back but she then had to spend 3 weeks at a kennel while I had an operation. She turns herself in knots this time of year and the only way to deal with it is for me to sedate her. We have had fireworks going off round where I live since the middle of October. So am I supposed to sedate my dog from then til after the new year? Not exactly very practical.

I'd be happy with one display a year if I can watch from the comfort of a chair with somewhere to shelter from the cold, and no fairground attractions to rinse my purse.

I personally don't have a problem with more than one night. It's what I feel. I understand that this is not a shared opinion but that's the beauty of debate. Not everyone with agree but what a boring world we would live in if we did. I appreciate pet owners have their issues with it and that's fine. But for many people they enjoy it and even home displays bring their magic. The excitement of such things to children is magical

Bad nerves are an animal thing as much as a human. I do ok with my sedation,I wouldn't get through a day let alone fireworks without it. I would give an animal sedation for a few days a year if needed. I know how horrible a nervous disposition is.

People who smoke around others causes distress. Can't see that being limited to one day a year at an organised event. Animals suffer from secondary smoking too.

Some people like playing music full volume at three in the morning. As a society we don't accept the "because I like it" argument. We all have to rub alongside one another and have to show consideration.

But not with fireworks seemingly...

Ultimately people have shown time and again that they can't be trusted to handle fireworks sensibly, so why allow their sale every year? The other day we saw on the local news pictures of people firing fireworks at cars driving along. Incredibly dangerous so why allow it?

"Because I like them" seems the inconsiderate answer.

Those who use it should remember next time their neighbours really piss them off with inconsiderate behaviour

That wouldn't be such a bad thing though. I don't know what kinds of noises your dog reacts to or the loudness so I can't really say but without my medication I jump at a car door banging. One of our dogs jumps at noises indoors but the fireworks aren't bothering her. I thought she would be a wreck.

Its very much a minority. I think most firework friendly people would agree that it's really for special occasions. And to have them everyday would spoil the beauty of them. And they are beautiful and a great way of "celebrating"

Well we've been putting up with fireworks longer that any pet that is currently alive now. So you "buy" that pet with the knowledge that this shit goes on.

That's a piss poor argument.

Many kids nd adults and beloved pets get maimed and/or killed by cars....will you be walking everywhere from now on or do you like knowing how much anguish and hurt you could cause behind the wheel? Such a ridiculous statement to make.

Where I can walk I will walk.

When I have to drive - eg for work - I will drive.

Ideally, yes, I would never have to drive. But for obvious reasons we all have to

Now, tell me, why DO you have to let off fireworks? And why night after night ? And why can't you be happy to watch them for one night, safely, at an organised event? Please tell me. I have told you why I need to drive

Why can't people be trusted to be sensible about it. Alcohol kills and murders more people than fireworks ever do. Why do you drink? Can't you just have fun without the need for alcohol?

I notice you have no reason that you can cite to defend the position that one night and organised events are sufficient. You seem to want to bring everything down to reductio ad absurdum

The excitement of such things to children is magical "

It's the really loud ones I hate. The pretty colours, whizzes and pops are enough for me. I don't know why they have to be so loud.

Wembley

My cat sits outside and watches fireworks; but then again, he sits in the middle of the backyard in the rain too. He is tough. His nickname is knucklehead

"People who smoke around others causes distress. Can't see that being limited to one day a year at an organised event. Animals suffer from secondary smoking too.

You have to accept that are major curbs on smoking. Much more than fireworks. Surely????"

Only curbed in public indoor areas and some places children frequent. People aren't so bothered in there own homes or in the street. There are plenty of people who don't give a monkeys what effect their behaviour has on others,or their own animals.

Ultimately what you like is of no consideration to those who like them. That seems to be the argument of the posters pro fireworks. Tough shit, basically!

Sooooo selfish. Makes my blood boil!

Pets being nervous or otherwise is not the fault of the owner. As I've said above, one of my cats doesn't give a shit, the other is terrified. They are exactly the same age, brother and sister from the same rescue centre and have been with me for the same length of time. Their nervousness or otherwise clearly has fuck all to do with me.

And yeah I like fireworks too. But while we live in a society where it's ok for the dregs of humanity to pop out 12 kids and not pay any attention to where they are, which apparently is setting off fireworks at 3am and throwing them at people from motorway bridges, then I vote ban sale to the public and keep them for organised displays. Yeah they're nice, but people are fucking idiots.

We have them because we are keeping up a tradition. Kids love them,we love the parties, atmosphere and the fireworks. The majority rules on this subject at the moment.

The minority is growing year by year so it would be easier to stop the problem in the first place. I'd like sterilisation as the solution, but that's probably a bit too extreme for the country so I'm going for banning fireworks except for organised public displays.

As an aside, if people's and their children's enjoyment of life is really going to be bereft and diminished by not being able to have fireworks at home, they have bigger things to worry about quite frankly.

Well, if they enjoy it, who cares?

Isn't that the argument being used?

Indeed, we should probably allow smoking back in the workplace. After all, if someone wants to why should the feelings of others matter?

See how selfish that attitude is?

Ultimately we all have to make concessions in order to get along - but there seem to be no concessions being made by some of the posters above

"

Where is anyone saying they want them banned? All I ask for - as has been mentioned above - is that they are restricted to Bonfire night, preferably kept to public displays (for safety's sake). That is not being selfish, is it? It is making a concession to those who enjoy them

Where's the quid pro quo??

So you would agree organised events on 5th November is sufficient? Some posters, above, have been reluctant to agree to that

"Sick of bloomin pet owners ranting and raving about fireworks,, GET OVER IT.. you know it happens and you know your beloved pets might not like them..

Turn up your TV's.. play louder music,, in the mean time im going to enjoy the fireworks

Thank You

"

I set off my first big rocket firework when I was approx 11 years old

It was in the front room of my parents house at 7am the day after fireworks night!

There was smoke and bright green explosions, obviously a very loud bang!!!

You think fireworks are loud, there even louder at 7am inside your house!

Certainly woke my mum and dad up!

Set fire to the carpet, had a large hole in the middle of the front room floor for about 5 years until my mum could afford to fix it!

YEP! I got a good beating for that one! Lol
