Ok, i'm not looking to upset anyone, nor am I looking to get involved in a debate about whether poor spelling/grammar is unattractive as we've all seen how that goes down. Just wanting to post an informative thread. Please feel free to add on any you see regularly!

I doubt that anything I came up with would be trend setting mainly because I would use a boring, old word like "pedant".
Just because I personally don't like the use of the word Nazi to describe people who like others to use correct grammar doesn't mean I think you shouldn't, that would be rather ironic. |

Some people do genuinely (generally! What's that about?!) use spelling and grammar as a filter.
Just thought of another one. A woman I know uses the word 'idealistic' when she means 'ideal'. |

I am mindful of people with dyslexia.
What I can't stand is people who portray themselves to be smarter than everyone else but can't be bothered getting their grammar and punctuation right.
My most hated misspelled word is definitely definitely.
Its not defiantly or definately. Ffs |

Yes, people with dyslexia exist, but there are spell checks and grammar can still be effectively learnt.

"Some good, but disappointing examples! Maybe we're just getting lazy. Assuming that people don't care?"
I don't really think it's anything to do with that, given a century ago public schooling wasn't as common and now most people have technology readily available, a lot of people just tend to proximate to the easiest option, which happens to be phonetics, but we don't have a phonetic alphabet, and it's one of the hardest languages to learn. Much as I dislike bad spelling and stuff, it's easy to forget that not so long ago, things were totally different. Maybe that's the wrong approach, but I think if people are willing and able to do these things properly, because we cannot ignore that things like dyslexia affect reading and writing, those are the people who will do better, but most people just don't see why it's necessary and probably never will. So it's circumstantial based on the person. If someone can't see past it, then both of them are better not meeting if they can choose to avoid it |

Spelling and grammar errors used to irritate me.
Then I realised that it has fuck all to do with how respectful a person is or how good a fuck they are.
The people that whine on and on about spelling and grammar are the ones to avoid now. Generally they are incredibly disrespectful and rude. |

"I'm noticing "Our" being exchanged with "Are" more often
Also, "Prolly" being used instead of "Probably""
I've noticed that 'are' effect.
I also use dictation to my phone, like Cortana, and wonder if it's a phone mishearing/interpreting what's been spoken.
Overall, as long as we're nice to others, consider that some have issues - including dyslexia and technology - then we likely get along. |

As someone who is dyslexic, dyspraxic and slightly visually impaired (I see above the normal spectrum), I have difficulty with spelling and grammar. I don't mind being corrected if the intention is to help. Unfortunately some see it as a 'one-upmanship' thing. I had a boss who actually got excited and got a RED pen out when ever you went near him with any document.
Once when I did the same thing back he was most upset! |

It's another filter for us - not the be all and end all, but you can tell a lot about someone by the way they write and thus it's an indicator of social compatibility. Yes, we like to socialise with our play partners as well engage in coitus. |

Well that's an interesting filter. I have an IQ of 152. I am conversant in a great many subjects from Particle physics to knitting, to politics. I can spell Chrysanthemum, but may spell form (from) wrong. So I fail you filter?
I prefer to look at the complete person first. Then decide. |

You're obviously a well educated and intelligent person, but as with many, you only read the bit you want and decide to comment on that alone.
You missed the part where we said, "it's not the be all and end all"
We all make the odd typo and grammatical slip and this is only an informal forum, not a job application. |

its all about belittlification (even though this isnt a word..most people will understand what it means), I'd find it hard to connect to someone using very harsh text speak..but what makes me better than a grammarnazi?- my ability to adapt to varying types of peoples use of language..if thats too much hard work for you thats fine..however the finality of it all is maybe missing out on someone who was going to be great company and possibly an even better shag than someone who takes their written english all too seriously.

I agree that most of the time it's laziness. If I'm not sure on something, I go and look it up. I always get affect/effect and practice/practise wrong, so I look it up before I write. |
