"... Although the numbers of heterosexual people diagnosed with HIV has almost halved over the last ten years, Dr Greenhouse said modern attitudes to casual sex could cause those numbers to soar again.

"The thing that worries me is that we are just at a potential tipping point for HIV," he added.

"Because if enough people change partners quickly, and they have untreated sexually transmitted infections, it might just start an explosion of HIV in the heterosexual population."

I think because men that have sex with men are at higher risk of HIV that some people assume it's only them that get it

I think he is partially right, young people seem to have no fear of AIDS possibly because it's not as publicised as it was, or that people are living longer with HIV rather than getting full blown AIDS?

Too this day I remember when the news broke about "this awful new disease" with the tombstone adverts - Guess that shows my age

To be fair I have never considered it a "gay" disease.... it's a blood born disease that can be caught by various means!

It's easier to contract HIV anally and it's easier for a man to pass onto a woman than it is for a woman to pass onto a man...

I think it's mostly just irresponsibility or plain ignorance that passes on HIV.

Too many people think they are somehow immune.

Check out the Australian advert from that time on YouTube, which has a bowling alley - where the pins are a range of people lowered on to a platform, and the grim reaper bowls at them. It's pretty horrific.

It's a virus, like influenza and herpes and ebola and chicken pox and mumps!...

Pretty soon we'll beat it because some of us are very smart, some of us are very dumb and for awhile it has the upper hand!.

Fifty years ago it was polio, they blamed the poor for that one!

In another twenty years, it will be another virus we've not heard of!

Ps the guy was on radio 5 and blamed gay men for the massive increase in syphilus... Seems like no groups, foolproof

It is far more acceptable now to have a one night stand.

In many instances, these are fuelled by alcohol or recreational drug use.

When someone is 'tanked up' they are far less likely to take precautions than someone who is sober.

I take it back, it's not just the young who are misguided and more likely to spread STI'S. ....

I swing both ways too! So do over half the women on fab Hun!

Std's and Hiv are spread by straight, bi and gay people who are foolish enough to shag virtual strangers without protection. Simple!!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

It's not a big surprise.

I do think we need to get back to having some public health messages. It feels like the work we did in the 90s has been forgotten and because there is a treatment (still no cure) some think it's like taking a course of antibiotics.

Not the tombstone adverts though. It just became a joke and diluted the message.

We couldn't use the tombstones anymore as people live long lives with HIV now.

Perhaps a daisy chain with a graphic infecting each 'daisy'?

You must have also been once told that the Earth was at the centre of the Universe. That was not correct either

I like that. More of a pyramid effect maybe.

1 daisy meets 2 daisies.

Those 2 meet another 2...

Before you know it there's hundreds of daisies all going a bit brown.
